Strike a chord...

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Chord :
-a combination of usually three or more musical tones sounded simultaneously.
-to establish or play a chord or chords for (a particular harmony or song); harmonize or voice

Harmony:
-agreement; accord; harmonious relations.
-a consistent, orderly, or pleasing arrangement of parts; congruity.

When it comes to weight loss ... let us strive to find harmony between what we feel and what we eat... as it plays a chord that seems to resonate deep within us....

Let our hearts sing...with resounding harmony...a new song of health and wholeness...

a new song of renewed vitality ...worthiness and ... love.

I like this! I had to stop and think about it and that's good - it's good to think about things -- harmony between what we feel and what we eat -- I think you're on to something. Thanks for sharing - this was cool - this made me think.

Thanks everyone for all of your comments!

I will find harmony and balance, eventually..else I'll be in a perpetual state of unrest and that's just no way to live..lol.

I pray that we will all find our "life song" and live it....be it.

Hmmmmmmm. I have to think about this. My first reaction is NO! I want to separate eating from feeling and keep them as far away from each other as possible, but of course, that's not possible, so perhaps it is harmony I seek.

Slacking on my exercises...sigh

Thursday, March 04, 2010

Even though I know how important it is for my overall success...I must admit I've been slacking. I'm so sad...NOT..lol....at least I'm honest...lol.

How easy it is to let a couple of days go by and not do it and pretty soon...it's almost a week...ugh. Where does the time go?

No excuses for me. I will and I shall...begin again..sigh. hahaha

I laugh at myself...because I can and I amuse me..lol.

C'mon, we all know what our problem is... and it's simply a matter of doing what we say we're gonna' do...want to do...should do...will do... yak, yak, yak.

Sincerity is no guarantee for truth. I heard that quote somewhere and it's in the dim, dark recesses of my noggin. Sincerity is no guarantee for truth. Kind of like...all the good intentions don't get the job done...lol.

I've always been a "doer"....so I know what to "DO"... Just DO it!!! Yeah, yeah... lol.

Get back on that horse and ride!!! Yeeeeehawwwww! yeah, yeah...lol.

Bottom line: If you don't exercise you won't lose weight as quickly and you won't strengthen your muscles... yeah, yeah....

I'll start first thing Monday morning!!! yeah, yeah...lol

On the brighter side...I have continued to wear my Pedometer "Pedie" every day. (Yesterday I forgot and Haley said, "Gramma!!! Put Pedie on!!!" yeah, yeah...lol
When I tuck her into bed at night she always wants to check the numbers...lol. Keep in mind, she hasn't a clue what the difference is between a hundred and a thousand...but she gleefully and excitely says, " WOW!!! ... Good Job!!!" God bless my little cheerleader!

Since my honey is coming home today...maybe I'll grab him and make him walk with me. He's so awesome...I know he will.

I"m so blessed for all the support I'm receiving!

Have a wonderful day!

Whenever I watch TV, I exercise, usually doing stretches, a few situps, and even lifting a small weight while sitting. My Mom (who would not do exercise tapes with me) has started doing stretches and even a few situps. She's 73 this year, so I am encouraged that she is trying to keep up her strength and it really helps me know that my effort(s) are a good influence. Now if I could just get her to quit baking yummy desserts for me!! Hmm, maybe a blender for smoothies. emoticon

    Hi Michelle,

Not to make excuses for you, but you have a pretty full plate as it is. Are you sure it's a matter of not wanting to exercise? Maybe you're just too darned busy/stressed on some days to try to find a few minutes for exercise. Just think about the extra calories you burn while chasing around after your granddaughter -- sometimes we forget to count the "normal" physical activity we're doing. You'll exercise when you find the time and are able to make it a priority. Until then, just be glad that you have SP and are making progress towards your goal.

Hope you and your DH were able to get out and take that walk. I bet you're glad to have him back home, too.

Have a great weekend. Take care and God bless,

Mary

I know how you feel. I had slacked off also but I have recommitted myself to my plan. Have done well this week. But I still have to kick my own butt to get going. lol. I've been getting up earlier to get my workouts in and it seems to be working for me.
I like your cheerleading section. How awesome that is.
I think you need to spend some much needed time with dear hubby and then You'll be able to get back on track! Off we'll go a sparkin' together!

I'm here to cheer you on!!!!! First of all, I loved the part about Haley keeping you accountable on that pedometer -- that is so sweet! What a little blessing she is -- nothing can be better than a little cutie cheering you on to your goals!!!

I know what you're saying about the exercise -- sometimes I just plain old forget! Imagine someone doing that!!! I should say I "used" to forget -- I've found a way that works for me that keeps me accountable and reminds me. I printed a daily check off sheet that is simply columns and rows --- the dates are across the top and the things I need to do are down the side. I keep it very visable so I can see it and be reminded of what I've done and what's left to do. It works like a charm for me -- I've been doing this since last summer and I find myself refusing to go to bed until I've done what I'm supposed to do!! That, for me, is huge! It may not work for everyone, but for now, it's working for me and I'm thankful for that. Maybe there's something like that that will work for you -- just like Haley and the pedometer -- finding something or someone that helps make you get the job done!

There must be something in the air - lots of sparkers are posting about needing to recommit to daily exercise (including me).
I walked 3 miles yesterday in my hilly neighborhood and my thigh muscles still remember every step taken today! I was complaining about the pains to a friend I used to walk with this morning. She told me to think for a minute - my body was 10 years younger and 100 pounds lighter when we walked before! She's right - I should expect the pain because I'm requiring my body to do more than it's done in years! Maybe that's the problem with that little "exercise button" in my brain - it's rusty from nonuse and needs oiled!
I'm going back outside to walk in about an hour, but I'm only going to walk about 45 minutes. I think that will be enough "oil" for the button today!

I have the same problem, except I don't have the little cheerleader!! But I think maybe Debra is right. I try to walk every day..and when I don't, I get discouraged and frustrated with myself. What about 3 - 4 times/week? Then you have guilt-free days. Though, I do feel better after a brisk walk, it is not a routine part of my day. But, I will keep at it. I am convinced of the health benefits of walking, other than weight loss, including stress reduction, increasing heart strength and improving the bones. I am a planner and not necessarily a do-er! emoticon emoticon

Hi Michele! This may be heresy, but ... I think at this stage of our recovery, what you (don't) put in your mouth is more important than exercise. That is not to say that you should slack off for a week, but maybe you should re-evaluate your program. I find that when I don't want to exercise it's because I'm doing too much -- you know challenging myself into a standstill LOL -- or I'm doing things that bore me.

I love that you have your little cheerleader keeping track of your pedometer for you -- you're getting a twofer -- more awareness for you and a great health habit on parade for her!

Cheers, Deb

Animal Crackers In My Soup....

Wednesday, March 03, 2010

Every once in a while you just gotta' have a little SHIRLEY!!! lol

Oh My Goodness!

Animal crackers in my soup
monkeys and rabbits loop the loop
Gosh, oh gee, but I have fun,
swallowin' animals one by one.
In every bowl of soup I see,
lions and tigers watching me,
I make em' jump right through a hoop
those animal crackers in my soup!

My daughter dressed up like her and danced to that song for a family talent show just a couple months ago. She watched it on youtube. As I was reading your blog, I could actually hear Shirley's voice in my head singing it! It's hard to be glum when you have that song stuck in your head, and it'll be stuck there for awhile now. Thanks for posting!

This reminds me... On the radio a few years back there was a program that aired on Sunday nights that played the old radio shows from the Golden Age of Radio. There was The Shadow, Superman, The Green Lantern, and sometimes they had comedy shows from Burns and Allen, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. I loved listening to these.

I used to be amazed at the advertisements of Maxwell House Coffee from the 1940's and like the song above, she speaks of animal crackers. It amazes me to think of how long these names have been around and continue on. I never knew animal crackers were even a thought back then. There's just some things that have been around SO long you never think about it.

Even stores date back a ways: Macy's, Penny's, Sears, etc. Interesting!

I've never heard this song; it's cute!

Well - I was going to say that when I'm bored I come to read blogs written by people like you b/c they're always helpful, humorous, encouraging or SOMETHING wonderfully fantastic---- but then I got to reading that article and I wasn't bored at all -- but overwhelmed with all the things I could be doing should I get bored!! But then I saw your post to your blog and I see that it's not boredom but restlessness --- I'm really thinking you're right and I see your point about there most likely is a difference -- but when you said it would take some "head work" in order to get a handle on this -- well, that's where you lost me! I've been at school all day teaching music to K-5th graders --- so, I don't have any head power left in me right now --- they took every last bit of my working brain cells --- but had I known before I spent every last one of my brain cells, you would have been one of the people I'd have been willing to save a few for! So to make a long story short (well, never mind "short"- that cat's outta the bag!) I have no advice whatsoever to offer at this particular moment!!! But I will think about this and I will say that the article did offer some interesting ideas and several that would be helpful on any weight loss journey as well.

In the meantime, I do have this to offer you:

I agree 100% with Debra's comment. Especially the last paragraph. We are funny creatures, aren't we?

I have to admit that I do get bored, though. And I think your Sheila's grandpa was on to something. Sometimes when I'm restless, I am just too darned lazy to come up with a way to deal with it. And THEN I get bored.

I have found, though, that for today anyway, that Sparking is helping with the restlessness.

DEBRA_T 3/2/2010 2:37PM

I'm with you, Michele! I do not get bored, I get restless. I think my internal life is too vivid to every allow boredom, but it is also active enough to engender restlessness. Joe had to get used to the idea that I would want to change something often -- jobs, houses, activities, furniture, dishes, whatever! Didn't like the same old, same old. As I've aged, I've found myself calming down a bit and longing for the stability of the very thing I used to reject -- the same old, same old. LOL hahahahaha Just one of life's little jokes on me (there are soooooooooooo many).

So, now, when I'm restless it's because there's something rolling around in my mind that I don't want to know, feel or think. Eating used to take care of that, but now I'm left with restless.

Cheers, Deb

Well..I can see that I have been wrong. I'm not bored at all. Bored was the wrong choice of words. I'm... restless. There IS a big difference. I have so much to do all the time that I don't have time for "traditional boredom"...and even when my children were small and would come to me and say, "I'm bored"..I'd quickly answer back,..."Then I'll put you to work.!"...they'd run off to play, then..lol.

I'm not THAT kind of bored...

I'm restless...now I have to figure out what THAT means to me..hhaaaaaaa.... great...more head work..lol. Thanks, guys!
Love you, too! haaaa

My gramps used to say there was no such thing as "being bored." He said that bored people are just people who are too lazy to use their minds to think of something interesting or worthwhile to do; that they needed to be told what to do. He firmly believed you could never be bored with a book to read or pencil and paper in your hand and words in your mind. He was sure good at telling US what to do if we were bored!

It's about the climb....

Monday, March 01, 2010

Losing weight is like mountain climbing...
It's a struggle..

It's hard work and you might slip, fall..and
dangle for a while.....

You might have to jump over some hard spots and cracks in the road...

But...you're gonna' make it to the top!!
You don't have to do it alone...sparkfriends are your lifeline ...
they'll pull you, push you, drag you, coax you.....help you.

Is it worth it? You tell me....

Someday you'll say...."What a view!!!"

Climb Ev'ry Mountain

Climb ev'ry mountain
Search high and low
Follow ev'ry by-way
Every path you know

Climb ev'ry mountain
Ford ev'ry stream
Follow ev'ry rainbow
'Till you find your dream

A dream that will need
All the love you can give
Everyday of your life
For as long as you live

Climb ev'ry mountain

Follow ev'ry rainbow
'Till you find your dream

A dream that will need
All the love you can give
