made it to the gym

despite my stiff ankle and sore elbow. i biked for 30 mins then walked on the treadmill for 30 mins (resisting the urge to do jogging intervals & instead did fast walking ones), then i did a full weight machine circuit.

yeah for me. i feel creaky and sore, but happy.

when i got to the gym tonight i found that i had left my gym bag at home. i left home with the wrong bags. being half organized is such a pain! oh well. my back was feeling pretty tight all day, so maybe the rest will be good. came home & ate a nice big bowl of raisin bran w/bananas.

on the plus side, i timed my drive from class to the yoga studio & i've got a good chance of making it to a workout on thursdays. my plan is to bring two gym bags - one with yoga clothes and one with gym clothes. planning ahead! and i'm putting the gym bags by the front door tonight!

for the first time in a few years i'm excited about my garden. so in addition to the flower borders i'm planting a vegetable garden. this will help me with my goals to eat healthful food and cut down on packaging/eat local. so i'm enjoying the spring weather, waiting for the kale, beets, radishes, carrots, chives and peas to sprout. and looking forward to strawberries in june.

it's just a work in progress, this getting in shape/being healthy thing. i set goals for myself, but that's not very motivating for me. and funnily enough sometimes the goals i set aren't really the thing i need to work on. so i'm not sticking to my workout goals, but instead of abandoning it all, i'm changing to accommodate my schedule and abilities. and in doing so i realize that i'm learning to abandon my all-or-nothing attitudes toward exercise, food and life. and that's a really good and healthy thing.

looking back i realize that i've done cardio (60 mins) 3 times a week for the past 5 weeks. yeah me. and i'm using my new droid to use the sparkpeople's trackers. so i'm not blogging but i'm tracking. and keeping up with school and work and family. so here i am happy at home after a wednesday workout at the gym. it's my third wednesday on this new schedule. and you know it's time to prepare for tomorrow night's classes.

2011 - trying to budge the pudge

I'm back again. I made it through a personally challenging fall - hard college classes, lots of office work, family adjustments, and a hurt back. I didn't gain much weight (3-4 pounds), though I lost some of my fitness. I'm pretty happy with where I am.

I really like the idea of a fresh start, so here I am trying again. I've even got a slogan - Budge the Pudge in 2011.

I'm going to go with what I like, be more consistent with daily habits and work on my diet - as in eating well for life, not a "diet."

1. I like biking outside so my first goal is to get to 18 mph so I can join some group rides starting in April 2011. I'll keep biking on the local trails on the weekend & add two gym workouts per week with some training podcasts.
2. I love yoga, so I'll keep up with the yoga classes 3 or 4 times per week. I'll add a daily yoga challenge to build my home practice. That starts on January 10.
3. I love swimming, so I'll work swimming into my new weekly schedule. Still working on the 0-1600 workout & that's just fine.
4. The daily walk - I don't like getting up & getting out, but I'm going to give it a try. BUT I'm going to pack my walking shoes, etc., with me daily so I can get one in right after work.
5. Eat well. Wine on Sat/Sun only. Dessert once per week. Up the fruits & vegetables. Eat breakfast at home!!!
6. Get some sleep.
7. Use my new droid to access Sparkpeople & track calories & fitness, post to the blog etc.

All righty then. Here I go again - time to leave the 170s behind for good!!

    "Budge the Pudge" - I like it! You have come up with your own motivational slogan and its catchy, memorable, and sets a goal! I also like that you have listed some of your strategies. I have found that writing lists keeps me focused. Even if I don't accomplish everything I have a "to-do" list that reminds me of what needs to be done. Good Luck and I hope all goes well....
