Time to get back on the workout bandwagon! Its so easy to let myself lapse into a state of perpetual laziness when it gets hot out and its been smoky from all the fires. I also want to avoid paying for a rec center pass for the summer because that becomes essential in the winter time, so I want to get fresh air while I can. I recently purchased an awesome kick-your-ass DVD by Jillian Michaels called 6-week six pack, and I want to start doing that regularly. I still have to work on balancing my workout, hobbies, and household chores during the week, sometimes I tend to focus on the hobby, or spend all my time cleaning up. Then with work travel, its so easy to get out of the habit of working out. I have a training next week and I am planning on working out every day, especially since this will be an indoor conference. The last one I didn't feel as bad about it because we were out wading in the stream for half a day each day.
I went for a lunch walk yesterday and a short (but difficult) jog uphill after work. I want to make my new habit to achieve some sort of excercise every single day even if it is just my 20-25 minute lunch walk. Something is better than nothing. I finally got some new running shoes that work for me, after a disappointing purchase of reeboks that were the wrong size (rural living means online shopping).
We'll see how I do. I should probably start logging my workouts to keep myself on track.

Lately, I have had a creative explosion. I've been knitting and sewing after work and trying to learn guitar and I just want to do it all and don't have enough time. My biggest problem is that I now sometimes push my workouts aside to do my crafting and I need to quit it! I'll have the frigid cold winter months to stay inside and do crafty things, so I need to get my run on and keep my crafting as my second priority.
Speaking of my crafts, I've now made a kindle keeper, a purse, and a darling wine tote, all this summer (since like April or May)! I even talked to a lady at the farmer's market about selling some things. That's exciting! :) Just sharing, I hadn't been on Sparky for a while, and felt like a silly little blog.

Well the race went great!
I ended up running my distance twice before the race and then race day, I kicked major butt making the distance in 46 minutes! I suspect that it was 4.2 miles instead of 4.5 but to me the difference is between a 10.2 minute mile and a 10.9 minute mile. I'm proud of either one!
However, on a slightly more somber note, I let myself get WAY out of shape after the race. In the 2 weeks following the race I biked once and probably went for 2 or 3 30 min walks. Then I tried to run and I was back down to 3 minute intervals again. I can't believe how easy it is to lose that! Crazy. I think I only gained 2 lbs from our Atlanta trip (which I tactfully didn't log) but when I went to my annual doctor's appointment, it finally added up, I've lost 15 lbs since last year! That feels great! I'd like to shed a little more before I get crazy and start buying new pants, but 15 lbs feels good!
I'm getting back in the groove of things, in the last couple weeks I've been running at least once a week, biking a couple days a week to work (10 min) and going on plenty of 30 min walks. And Sunday I went running for 0.9 miles nonstop, and I just need to keep working on it. Now I just want to get my own scale to keep myself accountable. I didn't realize how much that helped me when I was in the weightloss competition with my work back in May, but it kept me honest and motivated, hoping to see another pound come off when I'd weigh in.
I want to get back into my yoga dvds too, but it seems like when I'm home I have all these other things I'd rather be doing like sewing, knitting, or baking. I just need to get my workout on my brain and go....

Well its majorly crunch time now!
I still have not run my race distance. I was really tired and then got sick last week and I still am not 100% better. I'm taking some allergy meds, but since I didn't run for 5 days I'm feeling really winded when I go.
I am going to shoot for my race distance today, no matter how slow I have to go. I think I will stress a lot less if I know what 4.5 miles feels like under my feet, than trying to judge how fast I'm going on race day. I also have to remind myself that this is a fun run, but its just in my nature to worry about stuff like this.

I've got 3 weeks to go on my training!
Get ready to be proud! Yesterday I ran my first continuous distance since I've started this training! I ran about 2.3 miles without even stopping! It felt so good to do that. I can feel my muscles are getting stronger and each time I go, my distance gets a little easier. I'm a little worried that once my race is over I won't continue with the running, but I'm going to make a large effort to keep it up. The race is what keeps me going each week, I've been running at least 3 times a week, sometimes 4.
The great thing is, my knees are even starting to feel stronger. Sometimes they ache after I've pushed it really hard, but they are feeling a lot better overall, maybe because I'm strengthening my quads quite a bit and I've been doing it gradually (SO glad I started in March!!).
So far, I vary in time between 10 minute miles and 14 minute miles depending on how much walking I do in between, but I'm shooting for 10-12 for my race. That would put me anywhere from 45 minutes to 54 minutes.
I'll keep you updated, I'm going to shoot for running my whole distance this week sometime. Even if I have to take a walking break in the middle, I still want to get my 4.5 miles done.
