TODAY’S THOUGHT
7/8
The people of Judah and the city of Jerusalem were in a terrible condition. Over 150 years earlier, Nebuchadnezzar and the armies of Babylon had invaded Israel and had carried many of the people away as slaves. The Jews desperately needed someone who had the vision needed to restore Jerusalem and Israel to her former glory. They needed someone who was different. They needed someone who had been captured by God and was set on fire by His Spirit. They needed a person of vision if they were going to see their situation changed. God had such a man! His name was Nehemiah and he was being prepared by God as a vessel to be used in a great way to rebuild the city of Jerusalem and to bring about the restoration of the nation of Israel. DID YOU KNOW? For more details on scriptures, story and lesson, read today’s “FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH” and share it with those you love. HAVE A BLESSED AND SAFE 4TH OF JULY! Vic.

FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH, Mon, 7/8/2013

Nehemiah 1:1-11
WANTED: PEOPLE OF VISION, Lesson 2a

You and I may be thousands of years removed from the time of Nehemiah, but we also live in a nation that desperately needs people of vision. We live in a day when the walls of morality and virtue in society have been torn down and the gates of decency are aflame. It is clear to all that the church in our day is a mere shell of its former self. The walls of separation between the church and the world have been torn down. The gates of glory that identified the church as the house of God have been burned by the flames of sin and tarnished by the blight of apathy.

We need people of vision! We can become people of vision! We can become the people God uses for His glory in these days to make a difference for His name’s sake! As we look into these verses tonight, there are three simple facts presented here that teach us how to become people of vision. Let’s look at those facts as I teach on the thought, “Wanted: People Of Vision”.

V. 1-4 PEOPLE OF VISION ENCOUNTER PROBLEMS

V. 1 The Calmness Of Nehemiah’s Life - The life Nehemiah lived as the king’s cupbearer was a life of peace, prosperity and political power. His job was to taste all of the king’s food before it got to the king to prevent the king from being poisoned. He would have been one of the most trusted men in the kingdom. The king would have looked to Nehemiah for advice from time to time. His was a life of great serenity and ease. Nehemiah was living the good life!

V. 2-3 The Calamity Of Nehemiah’s Life - He peace and serenity was shattered by a visit from his brother. He brought news that the people of Israel were being afflicted by their enemies and that the city of Jerusalem was completely devastated. I find it amazing how life can be perfect one minute and can fall all to pieces the next.

V. 4 The Compassion Of Nehemiah’s Life - When Nehemiah hears this awful news, his heart breaks and he enters a time of fasting, weeping and prayer before the Lord. Instead of being happy in his position, his life is shattered and he brought to his knees!

This is how God forms people of vision! He knows how to stir up our nests when we become complacent and He knows how to get our hearts and minds on the things that truly matter. For Nehemiah, the innocent question he asked in (verse 2) was to be a pivotal moment in his life. The very fact that he cared about the people of Israel enough to even ask the question is evidence that God was already working in his heart. But, when he hears the response, it brings him to his knees before God. You see, God wanted to restore Jerusalem, but He needed a man of vision to bring that to pass. The news from Jerusalem was God’s call for Nehemiah to become involved in what God wanted to do.

When God stirs up your nest, that is His call for you to become involved with Him in what He is about to do. Now, when that call comes, people respond in different ways. Some, like Isaiah, respond eagerly to God’s invitation, (Isa. 6:8). Others, like Jonah, try to run from the call of God in their lives, (Jonah 1:1-3). Still others, like Moses see the vision, but try to take matters into their own hands and do the job their way and in their time, (Ex. 2:11-14). But, when that fails and they are brought to the place where they have to wait on God, the job gets done the right way, (Ex. 3-15).

Just remember, God knows how to get your attention. When He stirs up your nest and places a burden on your heart, do not hesitate, but go with Him into whatever He calls you to do. He has a great plan, and nothing is greater than being allowed to be a part of that plan!

TODAY’S VERSE!
Luke 12:24 (New King James Version (NKJV)
24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?

TODAY’S HYMN!
“Open My Eyes That I May See” By: Clara H. Scott (1895)

1. Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.

Refrain 1:
Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

2. Open my ears, that I may hear
Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
Everything false will disappear.

Refrain 2:
Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my ears, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

3. Open my mouth, and let me bear,
Gladly the warm truth everywhere;
Open my heart and let me prepare
Love with Thy children thus to share.

Refrain 3:
Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my heart, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

TODAY’S PRAYER!
Father and God, Redeemer, Savior, Lord and King!
We are Your handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. Sometimes we feel inadequate in living a Christian life. Our feelings tell us one thing: that we are ineffective as Christians, especially when fail to follow Jesus and do things Your way, even when the scripture is full on unlikely people doing impossible things. Yet the Christian life requires but one truth; and that is, to live a life of faithfulness to You. Help us to live by what You teach us and not just by how we feel. These things we pray in Jesus’ precious name. Amen!

I pray every day that the leaders of our great nations make the right decisions in the eyes of the Lord. It is true that our society is morally decaying and has been on that path for years. As Christians of faith, we must stand together and use God to help us bring Christianity back to its former glory.

Thank you, Vic, for all you do. We all need to be reminded of these stories from the Bible often.

TODAY’S THOUGHT

God is still in control, regardless of how things may look. Praise God that is still true today! It looks like evil in this world is out of control. It looks like Satan and his will are having their day. But, I would just remind you that we serve a God, Who is still on the throne! He still has all the power. In His time, He will demonstrate His power and His sovereignty over sin, Satan and the world. DID YOU KNOW? FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH, Sun, 7/7/2013

Ezra 3:10-13
THE YOUNG MEN SHOUTED WHILE THE OLD MEN WEPT, Lesson 1c

Hag. 2:1-9 THE GLORY OF THE PROMISE

As I said, after 15 years, the work on the temple still had not been completed. God raised up the prophets Haggai and Zechariah to preach to the people. God used these men to stir up the people of Israel to get busy and to get the work done, (Ezra 5:1-2; 6:14-15).

Now, this was a difficult time for both the old people and for the young people. Remember the old people were sad because things were not like they used to be. The young people were being discouraged by the attitude of the old people. In the midst of this turmoil, God used the message of Haggai to bring hope and encouragement to all the people of Israel.

His message still gives hope to us in this day as well. We live in a day when many are discouraged and wonder about the relevance of the church in this modern world. Others wonder what the future holds for the house of God. I think Haggai has some words of comfort for all our hearts today.

v. 4 The Promise Of His Presence – God says, “This temple may not be a great as the first one, but I am still here with you.” Friends, we have the same promise today. Things may not be like they used to be, but the same God Who moved then is still with His people, (Heb. 13:5; Matt. 28:20; Matt. 18:20). Praise God He still shows up always!

v. 5 The Promise Of His Peace – God encourages them to “fear not.” He is still with them and His peace will keep them as they serve Him. Thank God, in the midst of our trials and afflictions; in the midst of our labors and activities; in the midst of our feeble attempts to serve the Lord of glory, we have His presence and His peace to sustain us, (John 14:27; Phil. 4:7).

v. 6 The Promise Of His Power – God reminds them that He is still in control, regardless of how things may look. Praise God that is still true today! It looks like evil in this world is out of control. It looks like Satan and his will are having their day. But, I would just remind you that we serve a God, Who is still on the throne! He still has all the power, (Matt. 28:18). In His time, He will demonstrate His power and His sovereignty over sin, Satan and the world.

v. 8 The Promise Of His Provisions – Some were concerned about the expense of the project. Others were concerned that the new temple lacked the gold and the glitz of the first temple. God just reminds them that He has all they need! Friends, He still does, (Phil. 4:19). Don’t despair that the mega-churches, with their contemporary music, fleshly worship and lack of doctrine seem to be flourishing. God has not forsaken us! He knows what we need in these days and He will protect the remnant and provide all that we need in His Own time and in His Own way!

v. 7, 9 The Promise Of His Potential – These verses tell of a day when the “desire of all nations” would come. They tell of a day when “the glory of this latter house will be greater than the former.” He is referring to the coming of Jesus. Years later, this new temple was remodeled by Herod, and into that newly remodeled temple walked the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. The Lord came to that temple and fulfilled the words of Haggai. You see, He came to Solomon’s temple in the glory cloud, but He walked into this temple in the flesh! What does that mean for us? Well, we can look back with envy on the days when God moved in the great revivals of yesterday. We can long for the old days, but the fact remains that we have a privilege that they did not enjoy. You see, Jesus did not come back then to get His church, but He just might come in our day! So as bad as things may look to us from time to time, let us remember that our Savior could come for His church at any time, (1 Cor. 15:51-52; 1 Thes. 4:16-18). If you ask me, that is something to get excited about!

Conc: Friends, you can live your life looking back. You can live your life longing for what you think others have. Or you can seize the opportunities God is giving you in these days, do a work for Him and watch Him move in power. In that day, the young men shouted while the old men wept. In our day, may we all recognize the fact that God is looking for a people who will seize the day for His glory! I can’t go back to yesterday. I can’t embrace everything that is being done in the name of religion. But, I can seize the opportunities I have been given today to glorify my God.

TODAY’S VERSE!
1 Corinthians 6:17 (New King James Version (NKJV)
17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

TODAY’S HYMN!
“Sweet, Sweet Spirit” By: Doris Akers (1962)

There's a sweet sweet spirit in this place
And I know that it's the spirit of the Lord

There are sweet expressions on each face
And I know that it's the presence of the Lord

Sweet Holy Spirit
Sweet Heavenly Dove
Stay right here with us
Filling us with your love

And for these blessings
We lift our hearts in praise (hearts in praise)
Without a doubt we'll know that we have been revived
When we shall leave this place

TODAY’S PRAYER!
Father of Majesty, God of Encouragement!
We praise You and Worship You with humble spirits and grateful hearts, for you are our God, a loving and awesome God. You have poured out Your love, grace and mercy on us, and we lift up our hearts, minds and souls to You. Your love is unfailing: Your grace is more than sufficient; and Your mercy is everlasting. Put a new love in our hearts, revive that love for Jesus, and make that love live for Your glory. We give all our relationships to You and thank You for them. Enable us to love everyone the way You love us. These things we ask in the precious name of Jesus, our Lord. Amen!

And I will shake all nations and the desire and the precious thing of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the Lord of hosts." The Desire and Precious One, the Splendor of all nations is indeed our Lord Jesus Christ. GOD will shake everything mightily again, no doubt; He says so! But we, as believers into our Saviour, are GOD's temple now. We do not need buildings of human hands to remind us of His glory. He shines the light of His love and glory into our hearts in the face of Christ Jesus forever. To Him, to GOD alne be the glory!! Amen!

TODAY’S THOUGHT
7/6
Young people may have no frame of reference concerning the old days, but they can get excited about what God was doing in their day. Friend’s it is easy to err on either side of this thing. Some people are so caught up in the past that they cannot get excited about what God is doing in the present! Still, there are others who are so willing to embrace the newest trends and methods that they forget about what God did and how He worked yesterday. The bottom line is this: The past is gone forever and we live in the present. We need to look back and glean what we can from days gone by, but we have to live in the here and now! Does that mean we have to change to fit in with the times? Does that mean that we need a new Bible? Does that mean that we need to scrap our hymnals in favor of praise choruses? Does that mean that we need to replace preaching with “worship dramas?” Does that mean that we must lower our standards to accommodate the world? Does that mean that we need to be more “seeker friendly” so we can attract the big crowds? The answer to all those questions is “NO!” DID YOU KNOW? For more details on scriptures, story and lesson, read today’s “FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH” and share it with those you love. HAVE A BLESSED AND SAFE 4TH OF JULY! Vic.
