TODAY’S THOUGHT
6/29
When does the enemy come against us? Often, he will come in the midst of great blessing and great victory. Often, he will come when we are involved in doing wonderful things for the Lord. He will come when our minds are occupied with other things. What a lesson for the church! How many times do we find ourselves engaged in the busy work of our lives and in the busy work of the church when we come under attack from the enemy? I think that too often, we are like the church of Ephesus, they were busy for the Lord, but they did not even realize that the enemy had inflicted a mortal wound in their heart. They were so busy doing good things that they did not see the enemy when he attacked and wounded them. DID YOU KNOW? For more details on scriptures, story and lesson, read today’s “FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH” and share it with those you love. Vic.

    Thank you for the email and inviting me to join your group. I have read 6/29 and 6/30 so far and really agree with what your message is about. I have experienced the same thing as I have tried to come closer to Jesus things happen, I am thankful that I I have Him in my life now to lean on during these times of extreme stress because I do not think I would have made it through emotionally sound if I had not been a Christian. Only good comes from God, He has always been there when I needed strength I just did not have, I am a different person than before I was saved but I also know I can be better. Thank you again for giving me a way to be better and giving me the support just when I needed it.

    Yes...we scurry about like ants and suddenly the ant hill is being stirred with a big stick, and we run in all directions for cover. If we'd been under His wings all along, no enemy could scatter us in terror. Thanks be to God who saves us and KEEPS us, and delivers us from such perilous times, so that we are eager to seek Him first once again.

God bless your Sunday and week ahead.

FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH, Sat, 6/29/2013

2 Samuel 23:11-12
STAYING IN THE PEA PATCH, Lesson 17a

2 Sam. 23 tells us about David's mighty men. These were a group of highly trained soldiers who fought with David and aided him in his victories. Among these men were three others who served as David's personal bodyguards. These men and their exploits are described in these verses. ToDAY, I want to focus in on one of these three special men. This man's name is Shammah. He is described for us a man who took a stand against overwhelming odds and won a great victory by the help of the Lord. He is a man from whom we could learn much.

The Bible tells us that the Philistines attacked the people of God. When they came, all the people ran away. All, that is, except one man named Shammah! He took his stand in a field of lentils, or peas and he won a great victory. I would like for us to take just a few minutes to look at this man Shammah and what he did just a little closer. He teaches us a lesson that we need to learn this evening. It is that lesson that I want to focus in on as I teach about “Staying In The Pea Patch”.

There are three aspects of this story that help us see that there is a time to take a stand. There is a time to fight, even when others are running away.

V. 11 IT WAS A TIME OF GREAT CONFLICT

The Bible is clear when it tells us that the Philistines were attacking the people of God. It was a time of great conflict for the children of Israel. Notice what the Bible reveals about this time.

When The Enemy Came - These verses tell us that when the Philistines came, the people in the fields fled away. This lets us know that the enemy most likely came during the time of the harvest. It was the time when most of the people were occupied in the business of getting the crops in. They would be busy working and they would not be prepared for war.

This is still when the enemy comes! You see, harvest time is a time of great joy. People are working hard to get the crops in the barns so they can rest from their labors and enjoy the fruits of the harvest. Their attention is so focused on what they are doing that they are not prepared to go to battle. When the enemy comes, he catches them unprepared and easily defeated.

I think that too often, we are like the church of Ephesus, (Rev. 2:1-7), they were busy for the Lord, but they did not even realize that the enemy had inflicted a mortal wound in their heart. They were so busy doing good things that they did not see the enemy when he attacked and wounded them.

God would have His people be prepared! He has not left us without warning – (1 Pet. 5:8). Neither has He left us without an example – (Neh. 4:16-18). Let us learn to watch while we work lest the enemy find an inroad against us, even while we do that which is good.

Why The Enemy Came - The enemy came against Israel for only two reasons:
1. To inflict casualties, and
2. To destroy the crops. The Philistines knew that if they could wound their enemies and bring them to a place of hunger, they would be easily defeated and enslaved. So, those soldiers would march through the fields trampling down the crops and slaughtering all that stood in their way.

The same is true concerning our enemy the devil. He comes for those same two reasons: to inflict casualties and to destroy the crop. He attacks us so that he might weaken us so that we will be easier to enslave to his will.

I want to let you in on a secret today. The devil and the world do not mind us having a church down here at all. They don't mind us singing. They don't mind us preaching. They don't mind anything we do! However, when we decide that we are going to get serious about serving God, then trouble will come. The devil will attack us when we pray in a fervent spirit. He will attack us when we reach out and begin to witness for the glory of God. He will attack us when we start to praise the name of the Lord in this place. He will attack us when we decide that we are not satisfied to be like all the other churches around us. When we decide that we are going to take a stand for the Lord, look out! Trouble is on the way! As long as we are doing nothing, we are no threat to the devil at all! But, just let a few people down at the house of God get excited about Jesus and look out, the enemy will invade our pea patch and try to stomp down our crop!

What The Enemy Found - This verse tells us that when the enemy came, all the people fled from before them. What the enemy found was no opposition! They would march into the fields and the people would flee in terror!

Sounds just like the church doesn't it? Things will be going along just fine and the devil will stir up trouble. He'll use someone in the church to start a ruckus. When this happens, 99% of the people in the church flee from the scene of the battle. No one wants to take a stand. After all, we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings! I want you to know that this is the reason many churches are falling apart today! No one has had the courage to stand up against the attack of the enemy, look them in the eye and say, "By the grace of God, you will not destroy this pea patch!" My friends, we are engaged in the greatest struggle that the world has ever known! God is working to reach world for His Name's sake and the devil is fighting Him every step of the way. All the while, God has placed His church in the world to be a light for God's glory. And, many times, we won't even take a stand to protect that which the Lord has given us. God give us some who will take a stand!

This is exactly what the Philistines found when they came to Israel this time, because it was not only a time of a great conflict, but also a time for great courage.

TODAY’S VERSE!
Psalm 62:8 (New King James Version (NKJV)
8 Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.

TODAY’S HYMN!
“Stand By Me” By: C. A. Tindley (1923)

When the storms of life are raging,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When the storms of life are raging,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When the world is tossing me
Like a ship upon the sea
Thou Who rulest wind and water,
Stand by me (stand by me).

2.
In the midst of tribulation,
Stand by me (stand by me);
In the midst of tribulation,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When the hosts of hell assail,
And my strength begins to fail,
Thou Who never lost a battle,
Stand by me (stand by me).

3.
In the midst of faults and failures,
Stand by me (stand by me);
In the midst of faults and failures,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When I do the best I can,
And my friends misunderstand,
Thou Who knowest all about me,
Stand by me (stand by me).

4.
In the midst of persecution,
Stand by me (stand by me);
In the midst of persecution,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When my foes in battle array
Undertake to stop my way,
Thou Who savèd Paul and Silas,
Stand by me (stand by me).

5.
When I'm growing old and feeble,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When I'm growing old and feeble,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When my life becomes a burden,
And I'm nearing chilly Jordan,
O Thou "Lily of the Valley,"
Stand by me (stand by me).

TODAY’S PRAYER!
Father Almighty, God Most Awesome!
Thank You for Christian men and women who take a stand against the forces of evil and destruction. Protect them as they protect us. Defend them as they defend us. Encourage and strengthen them in their spirit, faith, soul and fight. Prepare us as You have prepared them, to stand for Jesus and our God. Help us to be mentally and physically strong in Word and in Deeds to the glory of our Lord, King and God. Undergird us with Your Spirit and Might to answer the call of battle and endure the hardships of war. This we pray in the glorious name of Jesus. Amen!

    We as a people are under grave attacks today. The moral underpinnings, set down by GOD in His word are being torn down on every side by the world's ways and satan's lies and often our own sinfulness. What kind of stand and full trust into Christ Jesus are we making? As you say, Vic...yes we sing and preach and commune amongst ourselves, occasionally having outreach programs. But what about the words of Almighty GOD about the issues of the day? What happens when we are not "politically correct"? What occurs when we share the truth from the Bible in love? Persecution will come, we are told. You are so correct. We must be prepared in our hearts by GOD Himself to be being bold in what He says, not our own thinking.

TODAY’S THOUGHT
6/28
Regardless of what the day may bring into your life or mine, we can rest assured that He will secure us in the present. Thank God, we are the partakers of His divine providence as we move through all the valleys, trials and burdens of our lives. God works in our present, just as He has in our past. Whatever comes our way is part of His plan and is a product of His love and blessing upon our lives. That same blessed assurance belongs to us as well. DID YOU KNOW? FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH, Fri, 6/28/2013

David: A Man, After God’s Own Heart

2 Samuel 22:1-51
DAVID’S SONG OF SONGS, Lesson 16d

v. 50-51 DAVID SINGS OF THE GOD WHO SECURES

As David closes his song of songs, he takes a moment to look back, to look around and to look ahead. He sings finally of the God Who secures.

v. 50 Security Is A Past Arrangement – The word “Therefore” calls the mind backward. David examines the landscape of all the years that have passed in his life. As he does, he sees the clear hand of God as God led him, kept him and blessed him. David sees that his past has been a time of absolute security!

It would do us all good if we were to take just a minute to look back. Look back to where you were when He found you. Look back to how He saved you and changed your life. Remember His power, His blessings and His miracles that have been showered over you down through the years. Remember how He has delighted in you, (v. 20). How He has strengthened and sustained you on many occasions. Remember His security in days gone by and praise His name!

v. 50-51 Security Is A Present Asset – As David looks around He sees the hand of God still working in his life. He was secured by God’s power in the past and knows that God still has the king safely in his hand. Regardless of what he day may bring, David knows that he is safe in God’s “tower of salvation”. The past has been a showcase for God’s power in David’s life, but he also knows that regardless of what today may bring, God will keep His child safe and secure!

That same blessed assurance belongs to us as well. Regardless of what the day may bring into your life or mine, we can rest assured that He will secure us in the present, (Rom. 8:28; 2 Cor. 4:15-17). Thank God, we are the partakers of His divine providence as we move through all the valleys, trials and burdens of our lives. God works in our present, just as He has in our past. Whatever comes our way is part of His plan and is a product of His love and blessing upon our lives.

v. 52 Security Is A Permanent Assurance – David looked back, he looked around and he looked ahead. When he looked to the future, he saw God working in his life out into eternity. David knew that God would secure his future just as surely as He had secured his past and his present.

We have that same hope! God did not just work yesterday and He is not just working today. He is also working in our futures. In fact, no matter what time or eternity brings into view, the saints of God are secure in their relationship to the Lord. This is the clear teaching of the Word of God, (Rom. 8:28-20; 35-39). When we entered into a relationship with Him, it was for all eternity. We are secure in Jesus, (1 Pet. 1:5; John 6:37-40). What a blessing and what a hope. No matter what comes our way, we are in a permanent arrangement with the God of glory!

Conc: No wonder David burst into song! His life had been blessed and graced by Almighty God since the day God called him from following the sheep. God had saved him, secured him, and strengthened him. The least David could do was praise the Lord in return. It is a fitting song designed to thank God for His wonderful blessings.

When we stop to think about it, this is a song we should all be singing. If we are saved by God’s grace, we enjoy the same blessings and benefits that were enjoyed by King David. We have more than enough reason to praise God today and forever. Let’s get about the business of doing it!

Now, it may be that you are not saved. If not, you can come to Jesus today and He will save you and begin to demonstrate His power and blessing in your life. If you are in a difficult situation and need the Lord’s intervention, you can call on Him by faith and begin to see Him work in your need today. Maybe you would just like to bow before Him in humble praise, worship and adoration for all that He has done, is doing and will do in your life. If there are needs, this altar, and the throne room of the Lord are open.

TODAY’S VERSE!
Revelation 21:4 (New King James Version (NKJV)
4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

TODAY’S HYMN!
“No Tears In Heaven” By: Robert S. Arnold (1935)

1. No tears in heaven, no sorrows given.
All will be glory in that land;
There'll be no sadness, all will be gladness,
When we shall join that happy band.

CHORUS:
No tears (in heaven fair)
No tears, no tears up there,
Sorrow and pain will all have flown;
No tears (in heaven fair)
No tears, no tears up there;
No tears in heaven will be known.

2. Glory is waiting, waiting up yonder,
Where we shall spend an endless day;
There with our Savior, we'll be forever,
Where no more sorrow can dismay.
CHORUS:

3. Some morning yonder, we'll cease to ponder
O'er things this life has brought to view;
All will be clearer, loved ones be dearer
In heav'n where all will be made new.
CHORUS:

TODAY’S PRAYER!
Father of Heaven and Earth, God of all Creation!
For us to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Help us to be strong in our faith to the point that we would readily give ourselves in life or in death to the cause of Christ. We rejoice in the mere thought of our Lord. We give You every situation before us and ask for Your Will to be done. We give You thanks for each request that brings us closer to You and heaven’s glory. We accept Your gifts of Love, Grace, Mercy, Peace and Joy to help guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus and to live to serve our God with all of our hearts, souls and mind. This we pray joyfully in our Savior’s name, Jesus Christ. Amen!

TODAY’S THOUGHT

David enjoyed what we all long for: absolute victory! I would just like to remind us that the same God that strengthened David is the same God Who has promised to strengthen us! He is our Protector. He is our Preparer. He is our Promoter, He has promised us the victory. Regardless of what you face, know that God is always leading you toward victory in your life and one day, He will allow you to sing the same song of praise the David offered. DID YOU KNOW?
