Exodus 20:1-17

Ted Turner has declared the Ten Commandments obsolete, "We’re living with outdated rules. The rules we’re living under are the Ten Commandments, and I bet nobody here even pays much attention to them because they’re too old. When Moses went up on the mountain, there were no nuclear weapons, there was no poverty. Today, the Ten Commandments wouldn’t go over. Nobody around likes to be commanded. Commandments are out!"

Turner is wrong when he declares that the Ten Commandments are outdated. As we will see in upcoming lessons, they are as fresh as ever. He was right, however, when he says that nobody likes to be commanded. In fact, modern society mocks the truth and exalts the lie. We live in a time when right is classified as wrong and wrong as right. ( Isa. 5:20).

Today, in America, many believe that there are no "moral absolutes." Many hold to a philosophy of "moral relativism." How many times have we heard statements like these: "What’s right for you may not be right for me."; "If it feels good do it."; "Anything goes."; " Nothing is right or wrong, there are just different opinions?"

All of this is the result of the feeling that there is no absolute truth; “You are entitled to your truth and I am entitled to mine“! A recent poll found that 67% of Americans do not believe in moral absolutes. Among "Baby Busters", those born between 1965 and 1983, the percentage was even higher at 78%. Even 62% of professing Christians said that there was no absolute standard of right and wrong. My, how America has fallen! This nation was founded on biblical principles of right and wrong. Today, that foundation is crumbling beneath our feet! James Madison, the 4th President of the United States said this, "We stake the future of this country on our ability to govern ourselves under the principles of the Ten Commandments."

Today, we begin a series of Lessons on the Ten Commandments. My aim is to show you their relevance for our day. I hope to lay a foundation for the future messages by telling you a little of the background of the Ten Commandments and why they were given. Let’s look into these ancient Laws and see that they are a practical standard for the life of modern man.

Why did God give the Law? To save sinners? “NO!” Israel was already in a covenant relationship with God, (Gen. 15). The Law cannot save – (Gal. 3:11; Rom. 3:20).

The reasons why God gave Israel the Law are as follows:

To reveal His glory and Holiness – (Deut. 5:22-28).
To reveal man’s sinfulness – (Rom. 7:7, 13; 1 Tim. 1:9; James 1:22-25).
To mark Israel as His chosen and to separate them from the heathen – (Psa. 147:19-20; Eph. 2:11-17; Acts 15).
To give Israel a standard for godly living – (Deut. 4:1ff; 5:29ff).
To prepare Israel for the coming of Christ – (Gal. 5:24).
To illustrate in type and ceremony the Person and ministry of Christ – (Heb. 10:1).

The Law is:
A Mirror – (James 1:22-25)– It reveals man’s sins.
A Yoke – It brings bondage since the flesh finds it impossible to keep – (Acts 15:10; Gal. 5:1; Rom. 8:3).
A Schoolmaster – Points men to Jesus – (Gal. 3:23-4:7).
A Shadow – Contrasted with the reality and fulfillment found in Jesus – (Heb. 10:1; Col. 2:14-17).

The Law was unable to accomplish certain things:
Make men perfect – (Heb. 7:11-19; 10:1-2).
Justify from sin – (Acts 13:38-39; Rom. 3:20-28).
Give righteousness – (Gal. 2:21).
Give peace – (Heb. 9:9).
Give life – (Gal. 3:21).

The Law was merely a guideline for living that possessed no saving power. Many in our day desire the bondage of the Law over the freedom found in Jesus.

“A Beautiful Life” By William M. Golden (1918)

Each day I’ll do a golden deed,
By helping those who are in need;
My life on earth is but a span,
And so I’ll do the best I can.
Life’s evening sun is sinking low,
A few more days, and I must go
To meet the deeds that I have done,
Where there will be no setting sun.

To be a child of God each day,
My light must shine along the way;
I’ll sing His praise while ages roll,
And strive to help some troubled soul.

The only life that will endure,
Is one that’s kind and good and pure;
And so for God I’ll take my stand,
Each day I’ll lend a helping hand.

I’ll help someone in time of need,
And journey on with rapid speed;
I’ll help the sick and poor and weak,
And words of kindness to them speak.

While going down life’s weary road,
I’ll try to lift some trav’ler’s load;
I’ll try to turn the night to day,
Make flowers bloom along the way.

Something that came to mind almost immediately. Ted Turner is a lost man who is on his way to Hell if he does not accept Salvation from the Lord Jesus.
2 verses came to mind which parallel each other:
Proverbs 14:12 - There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Proverbs 21:2 - Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts. (both KJV)
We live in a lost and dying world. God's way is the only way.

The law is holy the law is good
and it's written by God in stone
The law is faithful, forever sure
and it's written by God in stone
I will follow his commandments
I'll abide in him alone
For his law is my delight
It's written down in stone . . .
It's wrought by God's almighty hand
It's written down in stone.

Oh, Lord have mercy! This is sad. Yet the Golden Rule, where do other people stand on it?
I have heard even atheists adhere to it. I sometimes feel like I am caught in a time warp.
This was good Vic and I hope it elicits many comments. Thanks also for goodies and notes of encouragement.

THIS IS MY PRAYER, Tue, 7/17/2012

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Heavenly Father, Entrusting God, You touch our body, and restore our life and our joy. Death has been swallowed up in victory! We know Lord, that sin is to the soul what infection is to the body. It’s aim is to kill and to destroy. Without Your healing our outlook is hopeless. We thank You for Jesus who took the deadly sin-virus upon Himself and died for us that we might live for Him. His shed blood made us alive, whole and free from then death-hold of sin. We thank You, Lord, over and over again, for giving us life, for hearing and answering our prayers, for healing our body, and for renewing our faith daily. We thank You in the name of Jesus! Amen!

Thank you for your prayer Vic. I'm sure that God allowed my pre-op blood work to show high to give me a second chance at being obedient and follow the doctor's orders. It was the worst 12 hours I spent in the hospital on Friday 13th to Saturday morning. Believe me, I know now what I have to do EVERY DAY, not just doing good before my appointment with my kidney specialist. Thank you Lord for putting me where you wanted me to get a second chance to be obedient.
Sending you God's richest blessings.

Exodus 20:1-17
NO OTHER GODS, Lesson 14d

The whole point I have been trying to get to today is this: when we maintain the spirit of this first commandment, we will not break the other nine. When the first commandment is the controlling force of our daily lives, our primary goal in life will be to glorify God with our lives.

Jesus Christ simplified and condensed this thought and made it even simpler to grasp. (Matthew 22:36-40), “ Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

When we love the Lord with all our heart and being, there will be no danger of our having any other god before Him. When He is first in our love, our life, and our affections, the spirit of the Law will be lived out in every thought and action of our lives.

Israel failed to keep this commandment and they went after other gods. As a result, they were chastened and judged by God every time. The same will happen in our lives when we allow other loves to take His place in our hearts. ( Heb. 12:5-12).

When we allow this first commandment to become the overriding reality of our hearts, we will find that all the other commandments fall at its feet. For instance:

The second commandment is about worship, v. 4. When we love the Lord supremely, we will worship Him correctly!

The third commandment is about honoring God’s name, v. 7. When we love Him as we should, we will never do anything that will bring dishonor to His name!

The fourth commandment is about honoring God’s right to control even the daily events of our lives, v. 8-10. When He is the primary love of our hearts, we rest because He rested, and we will worship Him in all of life because He demands it.

The fifth commandment is about respecting authority, v. 12. When God holds the proper place in our hearts, we will honor the authorities God has placed over us in this life.

The sixth commandment is about the sanctity of human life, v. 13. When God is first in our lives, we will love others like He loves them and we will have no room for hatred or murder in our hearts.

The seventh commandment is the sanctity of the marriage relationship, v. 14. When God is first in our hearts, we will not use our bodies in a way that dishonors Him or our spouse. When God is first in our affections, sexual sin will not be a problem.

The eighth commandment is about the sanctity of the property of others, v. 15. When God is first, we will not take that which belongs to another..

The ninth commandment is about the sanctity of truth, v. 16. When God is first, we will be like Him and since He is a God who cannot lie, we will also be marked by the truth.

The tenth commandment is about contentment, v. 17. When God is first in our hearts, we will be content with the things He brings into our lives, and we will not seek or look upon the blessings of others with jealous and lust.

When God is demoted in our hearts, and we love other things and other people more than Him, we set those things up as gods in our lives. When we do, we are in violation of the first commandment and we stand guilty before the Lord of breaking all the Law. When I allow anything to take His place as number one, I have essentially set myself up as god, and not only am I not qualified for the job, I have stolen glory from God. I AM IN SIN!

This commandment comes before the others, because they all flow from this one. Everything must flow from God or it will fail. Everything must flow from God, or it will end in sin. Everything must flow from God, or He will not be able to bless it. Here is how Jesus said it: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you,” (Matt. 6:33).

It is not stretch of the Scripture to say that if I can love the Lord before all, above all and in spite of all, I will have no problem living for Him. The problem with sin is always a problem in the heart. It is always a problem of love. When I break the Lord’s commandments, it is because I love myself more than I love Him.

Conc: Many years ago, on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post, there was a painting by Norman Rockwell showing a woman buying her Thanksgiving turkey. The turkey is lying on the scales and the butcher is standing back of the counter, apron pulled tight over his fat stomach, a pencil tucked behind his ear. The customer, a lovely lady of about sixty, is watching the weighing-in. Each of them has a pleased look as if each knows a secret joke. There’s nothing unusual about a butcher and a customer watching as a turkey is being weighed, but the expression on their faces indicates that something unusual is going on. Norman Rockwell lets us in on the joke by showing us their hands. The butcher is pushing down on the scales with a big fat thumb. The woman is pushing up on them with a dainty forefinger. Neither is aware of what the other is doing.

THIS IS MY PRAYER! Mon, 7/16/2012

Monday, July 16, 2012

Heavenly Father, Most Wonderful Creator, You are our Master whose powerful name elicits our love , our worship and our devotion. Babies babble Your name, but that name also silences Your enemy. We are a little lower than heavenly beings who are favored with power, control and the ability to govern Your good creation. Yet You crowned us with Your glory and honor. We are intricate beings who can also be re-created through Jesus Christ, our Lord. The very power we so easily pervert has the same potential that gives us purpose and meaning in life. Above all else, we can be who You intended us to be, here and now, and eternally. May we live today remembering we are the containers of Your Holy Spirit, that we have Your fingerprint, and that we are Your highest created order to Your glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen! Vic.

The translators of Psalm 8:5 must have had a little trouble wrapping their heads around the fact that God created His man a little lower than Himself. In the NKJV they translated it from the Hebrew as "For You have made him a little lower than the angels", but the Hebrew word for "the angels" is Elohim, meaning God. He created His man a little lower than Himself! We are made in His likeness and image, filled with His breath of life! Praise God!

We pray in Jesus' Name not because we use it as a formula, but because God has exalted Christ and we are One in Him.

Exodus 20:1-17
NO OTHER GODS, Lesson 14c

The reason God possesses the right to make such a demand of His people is found in verse 2. He says, “I am the Lord thy God.” In that statement, God declares His identity. The word “Lord” identifies Him as “Sovereign, Almighty, and Supreme.” It identifies Him as “the self-existent One.” It reminds us that He is the “I AM”. It declares Him to be the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present God of creation, revelation and salvation. Because that is Who He is, no mere god of human origin should ever be allowed to supplant Him in our lives. There is no god ever devised by the wisdom of man that can do any of the things He can do.

“ Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake. Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them,” (Psa. 115:1-8).

“ To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like? They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship. They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble,” (Isa. 46:5-7).

“ Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might,” (Jer 10:1-6).

God has the right to make this demand of His people because of His identity as God, but He also possesses the right because of His investment in His people. He delivered them from Egypt and from their slavery in that land, (Ex. 3-14). He purchased them to Himself through the blood of the innocent Passover Lamb, (Ex. 12:1-13). He owned them and He had the right to do as He pleased with them. He also delivered them from the influence of the false gods of Egypt.

The same reason stand today. God is the same God He has ever been, He is still “the Lord thy God.” He has the right to demand absolute obedience to His will and His Word because He owns us. He purchased us to Himself through the blood of His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. He owns us, and He possesses all rights to our lives.

“ What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s,” (1 Cor. 6:19-20).

“Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works,” (Titus 2:14). He has also delivered us from the influence of the false gods of this world. “Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods,” (Gal. 4:8).

One more quick thought here, when the Lord says, “I am the Lord thy God,” that phrase is in the second person singular. That statement speaks of God as being in a personal relationship with each and every one of His redeemed people. He is “the Lord thy God.” If that is true, we must never allow anything to come before Him and become a god in our lives.
