MOSES, FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH, and THIS IS MY PRAYER, Sat, 7/21/2012

Ex. 20:1-3
WHO’S ON FIRST ? Lesson 16b

v. 2 GOD’S REASON

God could make this demand of Israel because He had paid the price for them. He had purchased them unto Himself and they were His. He chose them, loved them, delivered them and blessed them. Therefore, they owed Him absolute reverence and worship. How much more do we, the Blood bought Church of Jesus Christ, owe to Him? We owe Him our total devotion! Notice the price He paid:

He came down from Heaven – John 1:1, 14; Phil. 2:5-8

He endured poverty and hardship – Matt. 8:20

He was rejected by the very people He came to save – John 1:11

He was scourged – Matt. 27:26; Psa. 129:3

He was beaten – Luke 22:63-64

He was spit upon – Matt. 27:30

He was mocked – Matt. 27:26-29

He was humiliated – Matt. 27:35

He was crucified – Luke 23:38

His beard was plucked out – Isa. 50:6\He died – John 19:30

He loved us – Jer. 31:3; John 3:16

He called us – Matt. 11:28; John 6:44

He received us – John 6:37

He saved us – Eph. 2:8-9

He cleansed us and forgave us every sin – Col. 2:13-14

He adopted us – Eph. 1:5

He keeps us – 1 Pet. 1:5

He has every right to demand exclusive worship from His children. Wouldn’t you agree? ( 1 Cor. 6:19-20).

MAN’S RESPONSE

There are only 2 possible ways in which man can respond.

Man can continue to place everything in the world before God. This is rebellion and will end in hell for the lost man and a life of chastisement and loss of reward for the saint (1 Cor. 3:13-15).

Or, man can comply with God’s demands. To do so will result in a blessed life and a glorious eternity.

As you look into your heart right now, what, or who, do you see on the throne of your heart? Anything or anyone other than Jesus is an idol!

Conc: Okay, Who’s on first? The only solution to idols is to bring them to God and leave them before Him. He excels in destroying them and replacing them with His wonderful presence and glory. Remember, He will tolerate no one but Himself on the throne of your heart.

TODAY’S HYMN!
“We Praise Thee, O God” By William P. MacKay (1863)

We praise Thee, O God for the Son of Thy love
For Jesus Who died and is now gone above

Chorus:
Hallelujah, Thine the glory
Hallelujah, amen
Hallelujah, Thine the glory
Revive us again

We praise Thee, O God for Thy Spirit of light
Who hath shown us our Savior and scattered our night

Repeat Chorus

All glory and praise to the Lamb that was slain
Who hath borne all our sins and hath cleansed every stain

Repeat Chorus

All glory and praise to the God of all grace
Who hast brought us, and sought us, and guided our ways

Repeat Chorus

Revive us again
Revive us again; Fill each heart with Thy love
May each soul be rekindled with fire from above

Repeat Chorus

THIS IS MY PRAYER!
Holy Father, Merciful Gad, we pray that our treasures will always be in You and not in our possessions nor the distractions of this world. Help us never to make an idol out of anything or anyone. We put You first be cause we believe in You and because You are worthy of all our devotion and worship. We give You love, , honor and gratitude for all the good things with which You bless us daily. Most of all we thank You for Jesus, our Redeemer, Savior, and Friend. You, O Lord, are our greatest desire and we seek to live in such a way as to bring You honor, praise and glory. This we pray as we come before Your Throne of grace. Amen!

If human can see how beautiful heaven is, no one will idolized anything in this world; Heaven is beyond our imagination; God gave us imagination and the power to think...look around and look at how beautiful the sky, the flowers, and everything else around us. May be this will be an eye opener to put God in the center of everything and make us anxious to get to heaven.

MOSES, FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH, and THIS IS MY PRAYER, 7/20/2012

Ex. 20:1-3
WHO’S ON FIRST ? Lesson 16a

Ex 20:1-3 “ And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me“.

Old Abbott and Costello had a skit. It doesn’t matter too much who is in what position in our lives until we settle the matter of who is on first. In other words, we need to know who is in first place in our lives. This issue must be settled! If anyone, or anything, occupies first place in our lives ahead of God, than our lives are out of control and out of balance. This is the gist of the 1st Commandment. God wants to tell us who must be on first if our lives are to be everything they can be for His glory.

I. v.3 GOD’S REQUIREMENT

God’s requirement is very simple. He demands to be in first place in every area of our lives. He knows that all men must have a God of some sort, and He demands that it be Himself. ( Ex. 34:14 – A Jealous God ). God alone is worthy of our love and devotion. He will allow no interlopers.

Some would ask, "Well, isn’t there only 1 God?" Yes, there is only 1 true God, but there are many false Gods! "Our God is the thing, or the person, which we think most precious, for whom we would make the greatest sacrifice, and who moves our heart with the warmest love. He is the person, or thing, that if lost would leave us desolate." – Alan Redpath. "Whatever we make the most of is our God." – Martin Luther.

Man, by nature, is a religious creature. He will find someone, or something, to give his worship to. Often, things and people occupy first place in our lives. Notice some things we elevate to the status of godhood in our lives.

The God Of Pleasure – Phil. 3:18-19 – Pleasure is like a drug. It often requires more to get the same effect, and can include: sensual, sexual, sports, entertainment, etc., (Heb. 11:25).

The God of Possessions – Matt. 6:24. The gift of grab dominates many lives. People who place money and things first are idolaters: In this god we Trust like an old man and his secret stash.

The God Of Personal Worth – Romans 1:25 – When a person feels that the world revolves around them, and that they must always come out on top, that person is an idolater.

The God Of Plans And Projects – Anything that occupies the mind and life ahead of God is an idol!

This list is practically endless. Man can make a God out of anything. Yet, we must allow ourselves no God but the Almighty!

If we conducted a poll today and asked each person to name the person or thing that dominated your life, what would the answer be? Whatever it is, that thing or person is your God!

TODAY’S HYMN!
“The Greatest Commands” By Traditional (1993)

Alto:
Love one another, for love is of God.
He who loves is born of God;
And knows God.
He who does not love, does not know God,
For God is love, God is love, God is love.

Bass: (join Alto on 2nd time)
Love bears all things,
Believes all things,
Love hopes all things,
Endures all things.

Tenor: (join Alto and Bass on 3rd time)
God is love, God is love, God is love.
God is love, God is love, God is love.
God is love, God is love, God is love,
God is love, God is love, God is love.

Soprano: (join the Alto, Bass and Tenor on the 4th time)
Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
With all thy soul, all thy strength,
All thy mind.
Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
For God is love, God is love, God is love.

THIS IS MY PRAYER!
Loving Father, Almighty God, You are our refuge and strength, an ever present Help in times of troubles. We will not fear though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea. Show us how to put one foot in front of the other after a catastrophe and return to some semblance of living for our Lord. Help us to be an inspiring example of spiritual strength and courage in heartbreaking moments in life. Thank You God for loving us and for calming the storms in our life. Thank You Jesus for being our strength and refuge in devastations, catastrophes, circumstantial disappointments, and spiritual confusions. Thank You Holy Spirit for helping us to hear heaven‘s message, “FEAR NOT”. Thank You Loving God for your peace and strength in our hour of need. These things we pray and ask in Jesus’ blessed name. Amen!

    I wish I had the music notes for today's hymn. I know the alto and bass parts, but not the tenor or soprano. I will have to look online and see if I can find it.

I definitely need to have more trust in my heart that God will provide in times of trouble. I often find myself worrying about food supplies, a roof over our head, a job to provide an income. These securities can be so fleeting, but I need to trust God that he will provide all our needs in times of trouble. Thank you for this beautiful, thoughtful, inspired prayer. May God bless you and your household this day!

MOSES, FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH, and THIS MY PRAYER, Thu, 7/19/2012

Exodus 20:1-17
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, Lesson 15b

THE RANSOM FROM THE LAW

The Law condemned and offered no hope, Jesus came to fulfill the Law and set us free from its bondage.

In His life and death, Jesus did all that was necessary to set us free.

He fulfilled the Law – Gal. 4:4. Jesus perfectly kept the Law and fulfilled all the types of Law in Leviticus and Numbers. He became our Passover Lamb and our Scapegoat, forever taking away the demands of the Law upon our lives. The Law was never given to make us righteous. It was given to show us that in ourselves and in our own works, we could never hope to keep the Law. The Law opens our eyes so that we will see our need for Jesus – (Gal. 3:24).

Jesus met all the righteous requirements of the Law – (Col. 2:13-14). Jesus’ death satisfied God’s requirements for sin and for obedience to the Law. When we are in Him, we are not forced to obey the Law, but rather we are compelled to obey it out of love for Him and His great sacrifice for our sins. In Him, we move under grace, not the whip of the Law – (Rom. 6:14-15; Gal. 5:18).

When we receive Christ as Savior, He writes the New Law in our hearts – (Jer. 31:33; Rom. 2:15).

THE RELEVANCE OF THE LAW

With all this in mind, some Christians might be prone to think that the Law therefore has no impact on us today. That there is no reason for us to even think about the Law or the Ten Commandments. That is a false assumption! When we get to the place where we need no guidelines, then we have entered lawlessness, we are in trouble and in sin.

Matt. 5:17-18. Tells us that Jesus did not come to abolish or to do away with the Law or Ten Commandments. He came to fulfill them. Fulfill – "To carry out, to make full, to get to the heart of." When we are in Christ, the Ten Commandments become more relevant than ever.

Matt. 22:35-40 – Jesus summed up all the Law of God into two commandments. If I love God as I should, I will always keep Commandments 1 thru 4. If I love my neighbor as I should, I will always keep Commandments 5 thru 10. Augustine put it this way, "Love God and please Him." That works, because when you love God, you will always seek to do those things that please Him!

The Commandments do not stand as rungs on a ladder to climb for salvation. They stand as barriers erected by God to help us live to the glorify His Name. They are relevant today!

Ted Koppel of Nightline said, "Our society finds truth too strong a medicine to digest undiluted. What Moses brought down from Mt. Sinai were not the "10 Suggestions." They are Commandments.. “Are, not were“! The sheer brilliance of the Ten Commandments is that they are codify in a handful of words acceptable for human behavior , not just for then and now, but for all time." To this I say, "Amen!"

Conc: Can we keep these rules for life? Not in ourselves, but it is possible in Jesus – (Phil. 4:13). The Reason? We operate with a different motive and power as believers in Jesus. Far too many have tried to keep the 10 Commandments from the outside in. They have tried to do good to change their heart. As Christians, we come at the things from the opposite direction. Because our hearts have been changed, we are able to live the Ten Commandments from the inside out and it works just fine! Yes, they are relevant! And, we shall see that as the lessons unfolds.

Are you saved? Or, are you trying to please God by keeping some list of do’s and don’ts? If you are trying to do good your way to God, let me tell you it will not work! The only way to please God is to come to Him through His Son, the Lord Jesus. Receive Him by faith and then He will give you the power to live the kind of life you are failing to live right now.

TODAY’S HYMN!
“Living For Jesus” By T. O. Chisholm (1917)

Living for Jesus, a life that is true,
Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.
Refrain:
O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee,
For Thou, in Thy atonement, didst give Thyself for me;
I own no other Master, my heart shall be Thy throne;
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.

Living for Jesus Who died in my place,
Bearing on Calv’ry my sin and disgrace;
Such love constrains me to answer His call,
Follow His leading and give Him my all.
Refrain:

Living for Jesus, wherever I am,
Doing each duty in His holy Name;
Willing to suffer affliction and loss,
Deeming each trial a part of my cross.
Refrain:

Living for Jesus through earth’s little while,
My dearest treasure, the light of His smile;
Seeking the lost ones He died to redeem,
Bringing the weary to find rest in Him.
Refrain:

THIS IS MY PRAYER!
Most Wonderful Father, Amazing God, how many times have we fret about Your timing in our life. Yet, have You not shown us that Jesus knows each step of the journey? He knows what stops are necessary along the way. He knows what time it is because He is the way, and we do not need to worry, that we are going to be late. Can anyone of us add one single hour to our life by worrying? Help us to understand that our anxieties and fears rob us of our faith and trust in You. Enable us to trust Your timing more, and to wait patiently for an answer from You. We Praise You, Father and we thank You for Jesus. It is in His name we pray. Amen!

THIS IS MY PRAYER! Wed, 7/18/2012

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Holy Father, Loving God, no one has a more generous heart than You. We realize that You are the One from whom all blessings flow. No one can give what they have not received. Although we may be labeled as an outsider by many, help us to treat others with respect and love. Let our generosity help others even as You have been so generous to us. Show us how to be the good Samaritan, to live from generosity rather than from selfishness. Teach us to be more like Jesus and less like our self. Teach us that it is more blessed to GIVE than to RECIVE. Show us how to live generously from Your bounty to Your glory. This we pray and ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!
Vic.

MOSES, FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH, Wed, 7/18/2012

Exodus 20:1-17
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, Lesson 15a

Ted Turner has declared the Ten Commandments obsolete, "We’re living with outdated rules. The rules we’re living under are the Ten Commandments, and I bet nobody here even pays much attention to them because they’re too old. When Moses went up on the mountain, there were no nuclear weapons, there was no poverty. Today, the Ten Commandments wouldn’t go over. Nobody around likes to be commanded. Commandments are out!"

Turner is wrong when he declares that the Ten Commandments are outdated. As we will see in upcoming lessons, they are as fresh as ever. He was right, however, when he says that nobody likes to be commanded. In fact, modern society mocks the truth and exalts the lie. We live in a time when right is classified as wrong and wrong as right. ( Isa. 5:20).

Today, in America, many believe that there are no "moral absolutes." Many hold to a philosophy of "moral relativism." How many times have we heard statements like these: "What’s right for you may not be right for me."; "If it feels good do it."; "Anything goes."; " Nothing is right or wrong, there are just different opinions?"

All of this is the result of the feeling that there is no absolute truth; “You are entitled to your truth and I am entitled to mine“! A recent poll found that 67% of Americans do not believe in moral absolutes. Among "Baby Busters", those born between 1965 and 1983, the percentage was even higher at 78%. Even 62% of professing Christians said that there was no absolute standard of right and wrong. My, how America has fallen! This nation was founded on biblical principles of right and wrong. Today, that foundation is crumbling beneath our feet! James Madison, the 4th President of the United States said this, "We stake the future of this country on our ability to govern ourselves under the principles of the Ten Commandments."

Today, we begin a series of Lessons on the Ten Commandments. My aim is to show you their relevance for our day. I hope to lay a foundation for the future messages by telling you a little of the background of the Ten Commandments and why they were given. Let’s look into these ancient Laws and see that they are a practical standard for the life of modern man.

THE REASONS FOR THE LAW

Why did God give the Law? To save sinners? “NO!” Israel was already in a covenant relationship with God, (Gen. 15). The Law cannot save – (Gal. 3:11; Rom. 3:20).

The reasons why God gave Israel the Law are as follows:

To reveal His glory and Holiness – (Deut. 5:22-28).
To reveal man’s sinfulness – (Rom. 7:7, 13; 1 Tim. 1:9; James 1:22-25).
To mark Israel as His chosen and to separate them from the heathen – (Psa. 147:19-20; Eph. 2:11-17; Acts 15).
To give Israel a standard for godly living – (Deut. 4:1ff; 5:29ff).
To prepare Israel for the coming of Christ – (Gal. 5:24).
To illustrate in type and ceremony the Person and ministry of Christ – (Heb. 10:1).

The Law is:
A Mirror – (James 1:22-25)– It reveals man’s sins.
A Yoke – It brings bondage since the flesh finds it impossible to keep – (Acts 15:10; Gal. 5:1; Rom. 8:3).
A Schoolmaster – Points men to Jesus – (Gal. 3:23-4:7).
A Shadow – Contrasted with the reality and fulfillment found in Jesus – (Heb. 10:1; Col. 2:14-17).

The Law was unable to accomplish certain things:
Make men perfect – (Heb. 7:11-19; 10:1-2).
Justify from sin – (Acts 13:38-39; Rom. 3:20-28).
Give righteousness – (Gal. 2:21).
Give peace – (Heb. 9:9).
Give life – (Gal. 3:21).

The Law was merely a guideline for living that possessed no saving power. Many in our day desire the bondage of the Law over the freedom found in Jesus.

TODAY’S HYMN!
“A Beautiful Life” By William M. Golden (1918)

Each day I’ll do a golden deed,
By helping those who are in need;
My life on earth is but a span,
And so I’ll do the best I can.
Refrain:
Life’s evening sun is sinking low,
A few more days, and I must go
To meet the deeds that I have done,
Where there will be no setting sun.

To be a child of God each day,
My light must shine along the way;
I’ll sing His praise while ages roll,
And strive to help some troubled soul.
Refrain:

The only life that will endure,
Is one that’s kind and good and pure;
And so for God I’ll take my stand,
Each day I’ll lend a helping hand.
Refrain:

I’ll help someone in time of need,
And journey on with rapid speed;
I’ll help the sick and poor and weak,
And words of kindness to them speak.
Refrain:

While going down life’s weary road,
I’ll try to lift some trav’ler’s load;
I’ll try to turn the night to day,
Make flowers bloom along the way.
Refrain:

    Vic,
Something that came to mind almost immediately. Ted Turner is a lost man who is on his way to Hell if he does not accept Salvation from the Lord Jesus.
2 verses came to mind which parallel each other:
Proverbs 14:12 - There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Proverbs 21:2 - Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts. (both KJV)
We live in a lost and dying world. God's way is the only way.

    God's law does not fade with time
God's law will forever be the same
God's law does not change with changes in time
God has the right to command us as we are his masterpiece

    The law is holy the law is good
and it's written by God in stone
The law is faithful, forever sure
and it's written by God in stone
I will follow his commandments
I'll abide in him alone
For his law is my delight
It's written down in stone . . .
It's wrought by God's almighty hand
It's written down in stone.

    Oh, Lord have mercy! This is sad. Yet the Golden Rule, where do other people stand on it?
I have heard even atheists adhere to it. I sometimes feel like I am caught in a time warp.
This was good Vic and I hope it elicits many comments. Thanks also for goodies and notes of encouragement.
Let us listen not to gallop polls or popular opinion, but the God of all who wrote the Commandments in our hearts.
