5 days without a cigarette

I'm finding the only time I'm really craving a cigarette is after work. I decided I need a new "something" for after work. Decided that since I pay for a gym membership and drive past it every day on my way home, that I'll trade my cigarette for an hour at the gym. That worked out and I felt so good about myself that I treated me to a mocha frappe from McDonald's. So I burned about 350 calories and drank 650, lol.

Update: 9 months now smoke free! Unfortunately haven't broken the mocha frappe addiction and haven't visited the gym in months.

Update: 4th of July weekend will be my 1 year anniversary, smoke free. Glad to see I have begun to return to the gym, exercise classes and working out at home. I have also managed to switch my addiction from McDonald's to Starbucks, where they have the Java Chip Frapaccino Light which at least gets the calories down from almost 700 to only 200-260, which I can work into my diet.

    Congrats on losing the cigs. Very commendable. I agree with you on the McD's Frappes being addictive. Not good when you have diabetes.

Unemployment, hmmm. Was okay the first week, relax, play on the computer, sleep whenever you want. I started exercising in the mornings and thinking well this is good I will get fit while I can. The second week, eating out of boredom crept in and exercising slid down. I have been unemployed three weeks now and the weight is not just creeping on, it's bob-sledding! I can't afford to go places so I sit at home, eat, get more and more introverted and feel like I'm not in control anymore. I sure hope this ends soon.

    When I do schoolwork at home I have a tendency to eat and eat and eat... Once I realized this, I stopped buying unhealthy snacks. The food in our houes is pretty boring, but at least now I know that if I snack it's not THAT bad for me... yogurt with granola, fruit, popcorn, chocolate milk (my personal fav -- calcium + protein + CHOCOLATE)... good luck, chin up :o)

  MJOHEMME, don't give up hope. I know what it's like to be unemployed. I expect you already registered with one or two brick-and-mortar search firms in your area, as well as with a few online ones, such as Career Builder and Craig's Llist, as you try to find another job.

I know it's not an easy time for you, but try your best to get some exercise in every day. If you live in a part of the country where it hasn't really got cold yet (such as in the south), go for a walk in the park, or walk around a mall. Also, if you can volunteer an hour or two at your church (or other religious establishment) office, or a soup kitchen or food bank, that would make the day go by faster, and you'll be helping someone else at the same time. That way, you won't get bored and give in to the temptation to eat. But keep your cell phone with you at all times, though, so that you can still get your calls.

Hang in there; think positive thoughts. Remember that what you do for others will come back to you tenfold.

I'm a "Fast Fueler" and that fits me pretty good. I am busy a lot and convenience is everything in my food choices. I do good at work because I bring healthy breakfast and lunch choices with me, but outside of that it's whatever is convenient. I hate going to the grocery store and when I do I buy a lot of "convenience foods" like Homestyle Bakes, frozen pizzas, anything that is quick to prepare.

Guess I need to make some changes on the home front.

    Knowing what this issue at hand, is the first step. I am mostly the same way, do great at work and then sometimes when I get home it falls appart. I have changed all that and I am now eating better, working out more and feel GREAT. You can do this, and will do this.
