True or False: Depression can be life-threatening?

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

I did SP trivia today and they asked if depression can be life threatening. I said true, but was thinking more about it leading to suicide; so found the info in the explanation (below) interesting because I never thought about how it could impact your immune system and increase fatigue.

SP Explanation:
Left untreated, depression can last for weeks, months or even years and increase the risk of other health problems and even death. Untreated depression can lead to the following:
- A weakened immune system, resulting in more and longer-lasting illnesses
- Insomnia, which leads to fatigue, reduced mental clarity, and trouble concentrating
- A higher risk of death in the event of a heart attack or stroke
- Alcohol and drug use, abuse, and dependence
- Suicidal thoughts and/or attempts

All so true----sad is a hard place --but feeling there is no way out is when we do our bad behaviors -- trying to medicate ourselves one way or the other--Yes, seeking professional help takes courage---looking at the cause can be gut retching--but soo worth the effort.

I'll add, that I think depression leads people to a hopeless feeling, which in turn keeps people from taking the active steps to manage their chronic conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. e.g. people tend not to take their meds, monitor their glucose, eat properly. This definitely can lead to death.

Depression is an actual illness; too bad so many people don't get treatment for it. There is a stigma and also many health plans make it hard to get the ongoing treatment needed.

Simplify life: Wardrobe Mission

Saturday, November 06, 2010

JAY75REY's recent blog "Simple Gifts" noted that one man (Matt) has realized that he has "way too many clothes" and in his desire to simplify things he's decided to tackle his overstuffed closet (which is something I need to do) by wearing one outfit for the entire month of November. This idea intrigued me so I had to check his link:

I read his article and watched his YouTube video (great job!). His November "One Outfit Wardrobe" will include the following:

1 coat, hat, pair of gloves, pair of shoes
1 over shirt, pair of pants
3 undershirts, socks, and underwear, handkerchiefs

other suggested versions of participation include:

Three outfits
3 coats, 1 hats, 1 pair of gloves, 3 pair of shoes
3 over shirts, 3 pair of pants
3 undershirts, socks, and underwear, handkerchiefs
add/remove any customizations you like

Five outfits
3 coats, 1 hats, 1 pair of gloves, 3 pair of shoes
5 over shirts, 5 pair of pants
5 undershirts, socks, and underwear, handkerchiefs
add/remove any customizations you like

Matt is encouraging participation. I'm thinking about it. What about you?

It is an excellent challenge. I don't know where I would start (actually, I already have started cleaning out a bit from the summer stuff). I "guess" that one of his options would be his bucket of work clothes? unless he is not working at all. With those super winter things, maybe he will just be playing in the snow. HAHAHAHA
WOW what a way to clean out those closets............
Are you in MIMS?? emoticon

100% on Spark Trivia!

Thursday, November 04, 2010

I don't know how many Spark Peeps are doing the trivia in the morning, but I am. Anyway, I seem to always get at least one of the questions wrong, so when I got all 3 questions correct today -I had to celebrate!

Good for your 100%! Keep at it! I find I learn a lot by doing the SparkPeople Quizzes. Some people have more of a knack for trivia than others -- I think it's genetic.
