Setbacks, grieving loss and motivation...

Tuesday, July 03, 2012

I have had some setbacks over the past 5 years of my journey, but none more great than the things I have gone through this past year.
I have a number of health related issues, mostly with this bad back of mine, that have chipped away at my motivation.
Slowly but surely I began gettin out of shape and letting my back issues control my emotions and routines that kept me healthy.

2 months ago I lost my best friend in the whole world. (He is in the picture on my page handing me a water bottle during a marathon I was running)
He was 35 years old and was in good health, or so we thought.
He was not over weight and played sports regularly. He died of a sudden heart attack 4 days before he was set to marry the love of his life. He had a heart condition and had 3 blocked arteries he didn't even know about.

One month after losing him, my wife gave birth to our first child 3 months early AND at home. It was sudden and terrifying to go through to say the least.
1 week after she was born, our little girl died of complications.

To say the least, it has been a difficult time the past while.

All this has made me again realize just how short life is and that we have to make the best of our time here. I am re-motivated to get back in good shape and to lose the weight of have put on. I have started running again and got a nice ne Garmin 410 to help with that.

Alot of people have counted me out and thought I was done. BUT...
I am NOT, I am so motivated that I believe nothing can stop me from achieving my goals.
I have lost sight sometimes, but my goals have always stuck with me in my mind.

I am on the come back. I am ready and willing to give it everything I have.

Stay tuned and watch me go!!

God bless and thanks for checking in on me. More to come real soon!

Thanks everyone for checking in on me. Friend me and follow me and I'll do the same ok? :)

The Garmin... I LOVE it. I was wanting one for along time and finally got one on sale at a good deal. I got the 410 model.

Good luck to everyone, and remember...

Life is short, limits are over-rated and pain is just weakness leaving the body!

WOW, any one of those things would be tough for any of us to go through, having them hit you all at once can be devastating.

But you sound pretty resilient and the stories on your Sparkpage and blog shows your chock full of character and determination.

Keep at it...ask for help when you need it....dig deep...and do what you know is right!

Take care!

Praying for you and your family. So much to deal with; it would be easy to understand if you gave up and became a "Spark Ghost." So glad you have chosen to take care of yourself and stay with us!!

I just started using the community features a few months ago and am loving the inspiration it is giving me to keep working at improving myself.

I'm going to "Friend" you and check in and see how you are doing!

so sorry to read about your losses - stressful times indeed :-(

How are you liking the Garmin? I'm considering buying one, but am waffling on exactly which one I want!

I just read your blog. It's good to see you back.
I can't say strongly enough to be so gentle with yourself. My God what a lot you have been through. I can't imagine, truly.
But I do know about health needing to be a second priority because there are other things, like grief, in front of you. It's a great sign that you posted this, and have enough energy to at least want to get back into it. Your goals most surely will have to be a lot different now, and that's OK.
Know so much that I am thinking of you and your wife. You will be in my prayers. And whatever support you need here on SP, just ask for it.
Much love to you.

I'm so sorry for your losses. They are not insignificant. We lost one of our twins 4 1/2 years ago when he was 4 months old. That kind of grief stays with you a long time. People who haven't been through something like that don't know whether to ask you about it or not, so give yourself the freedom to talk about it whenever you want to. Give yourself - and your wife - a lot of grace over the next year or two. Everyone grieves differently.

Good plan to get back to exercising. Allow God to work in your life and take it one day at a time. God bless you!

June- bikes, hikes and swollen dykes

Monday, June 27, 2011

June is almost gone but summer hasn't arrived yet here. Rain rain rain and floods.
Good enough to get the road bike out though. I went for my first ride of the season and did 22KM. My bike was just out of the shop and worked great. It is going to take some rides to get my biking legs back I have realized!

Running is as much up and down as the roads where I live. I recently had some injections in my spine that didn't help, Frustrating but I am keeping on trucking down that road no matter what.
I have a lot of faith that what is meant to happen will happen in time, and what is happening now is meant to be happening now.
No matter what your struggle, big or small; have faith. If it is faith in your God, or faith in yourself or both, you must have it to succeed because we all run into walls sooner or later. What you do when you get to that wall will depend on what's inside of you!

Thanks for checking in on me.

May- Bluenose Marathon

Monday, May 23, 2011

Ran in my first ever Bluenose half-marathon this week-end. The city was lively, the crowd was great and the course was filled with lots of sites and sounds. (and hills!)

I ran it with my brother and sister. IT was my bro's first ever race. He just started running in January and has lost 60lbs so far! He did awesome and even beat his goal time by over 10 minutes. We all ran and crossed the finish line together.
It was the best running experience to be part of, I hope we can do it again.
Lots of family having a good healthy time, can't beat that now can yah!? :)

Peace.

Thank you very much. Yes, it's hard to imagine, but imagining is what did it for me. I had the vision of running a marathon in my head even when at my heaviest and just starting. I kept reminders of that vision in front of me at all times. What a reward it was to finish, such a blessing.
This site was exactly what I needed, and is exactly what I still need. :)

All the best.

Very inspiring. Looked at a couple of your other blogs and your home page. Wow, you look completely different after loosing so much weight. Even thinking about running a half marathon at the weight we were when you started is hard to imagine.
