Pretty Woman

Thursday, July 01, 2010

Remember that movie with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere? One of my favorite lines from the movie is when she defiantly tells him, " I say who, I say where, I say how much." Ok, well, I am taking that same tact for myself. I get to make the decisions for me, and I am doing them.

Started off with a good breakfast and a walk. Out of necessity, I will need to make several stops across town today and it will be much easier to do on foot. I am becoming a champion of movement. I know exactly how I had my success before and I know how to get it back.

Thank you to my friend, CM, for reminding me I am a rock star! Woo hoo!

Cave Dweller

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

I am not my spark best today, not by a long shot. I walked a smidge and have little excuse for not doing more. It is the perfect day outside!!!

I have been hiding in my cave for the better part of the day. My office is tucked away under a stairwell and it reminds me of a little cave. Some days, I call it the bat cave. Today is not really one of those days.

I am sitting in the middle of a lot of work angst. Not for the actual job which I could do with both hands tied behind my back. :) It's for the political situations you find yourself in which you sometimes just can't avoid. Ugh! It involves a person who I have been friends with since I started here. Sadly, she didn't make the best choices and it has come back to haunt her. Unfortunately, she just doesn't see the big pic or the implications and will put other people in awkward situations. I am playing the avoidance game for now, but I have been binging (after work) and chewing my nails to the bone.

For now, I will try to take my mind off it, and try to chill.

Spark on, sparkies. I do know that this too, shall pass.

Thanks for the good wishes, and your post today says it all. Stress makes us want to punish something--and often, because we can't punch the cause in the nose, we turn it inside, on ourselves. I am done with beating up on me because the world is sometimes an unpleasant place--when I beat up on a treadmill or a bike or a weight machine, the problem doesn't go away, but I feel better able to handle it.

By contrast--when I beat up on me (by not working out, eating something I know I shouldn't, or "consuming mass quantities") not only doesn't the problem go away--I create another, worse one.

Go get 'em, Tigress!

    Hey!!!! I haven't had a paycheck in five months as of 02 July. I went from a 6-figure income to a little over $20K . . . wanna trade????

Don't use stress as an excuse to goof off! EXERCISE REDUCES STRESS--so get out there and work it!!

Stress is an evil thing. I fight with the want to eat that calorie ridden chocolate or cookie. I find taking a walk at lunch at least gets me out of my office and that is better for my mood. Good Luck!

54 Weeks

Monday, June 28, 2010

In 54 weeks, I'll be climbing on the back of my hubby's Harley, going to Bike Week in Gettysburg, PA. This is one of those dreams that he's had. This gives me time to work on my plan of action and get to a place where I feel comfortable on the bike, and being more visible when chugging down the road.

54 weeks sounds much more concrete to me than to say a year and 2 weeks. It helps me to have a specific goal to propel me forward. This just might be the incentive I need to buckle down and move forward. VROOOOOOOOOOOOM!

I had a healthy breakfast at home and packed a lunch. I am going to go walk to the bank to help get some fitness in. I will leave shortly to bypass as much of the heat and humidity that I can.

My goals each week as I count down the 54 weeks:
1) Eat healthy most of the time
2) Track food on SP
3) Blog daily.
4) Exercise more often than not.

I did not cancel my gym membership after all. Riding the bike doesn't help me to lose really but it does amp up my energy level and make my legs feel stronger.
It makes my heart muscle happy. I'll start on the weight training again this week. I need to set up a specific plan to make it happen.

Vrooooom, vrooooom and away we go. :)

I'm from NJ

Friday, June 25, 2010

Started talking to a colleague today that I have seen in passing many times. She wanted to know where I was from since she thinks I am very friendly. She couldn't believe that I am from the beautiful garden state (that's right bucko, NJ) since we may have a bad rep about how warm and friendly we can be. We're not all mobsters. :)

I'm keeping up my goal of trying to encourage everyone I encounter. Actually, she needed a lot of encouraging. I took a moment to look outside myself and upon our conversation. It reminded me of a few things I really like about myself.

1). I can talk to anyone. (my hubby doesn't always think this is good - ha ha ha)
2.) I am very open.
3.) I am a champ at encouraging people.
4.) I can help people see alternative perspectives

It was a lovely way to spend a morning, sitting outside in the sun, reading the newspaper, making a friend. Happy Friday, Sparkies! Spark on!

It amazes me that people always try to pigeon-hole others based on broad generalizations. We are all different...that's what makes it so wonderful.

I was born in Queens, NY, grew up in the Bronx, moved 'upstate' when a teenager and back to the Bronx for college. Since I married I have lived in WV, CT, NY again, GA, NJ, back to NY, and now PA for 16 years. I have met all types of people in all of these places and could not tell you what 'type' of people live in any of those states!

Out of the Blue

Thursday, June 24, 2010

I got an email yesterday that blew my mind. Twenty years ago, I worked for a company that I loved dearly. My job included answering phones to perform a very mundane task from a centralized location. It meant I talked to the same people from 350 stores on a routine basis. The task itself was mundane, but I had a good time. I was silly (still am) and it made the task much more fun for everyone. Be that as it may, it still blew my mind that one of those guys tracked me down from the internet and re-connected with me last night. I am still stunned when I think about it, and flattered beyond belief.

I'm just writing this blog to remind myself how even seemingly insignificant moments can have an impact on another person. You just never know how much of a lifeline the smile or laugh you share today will mean to another person. This note has made me recognize how much I can change a life, including my own. One of the things he said was that he'd never forgotten me and he wanted me to know that. Wow! What a gift! :)

Have a beautiful day, Sparkies! Spark On!
