New ways to get in healthy olive oil

Thursday, January 12, 2012

The past 6 months I have gotten my overall cholesterol level back to a normal level by diet and exercise, however my good cholesterol is on the low side. So I have been focusing on getting more healthy oils in my healthy lifestyle diet. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fatty acids that control LDL levels while raising HDL (the good cholesterol) levels.

I found some new ways of adding that wonderful healthy oil instead of just using it on a salad. I now:

1) Drizzle olive oil on whole grain toast instead of using butter or margarine.
2) Add olive oil into my morning oatmeal.
3) Add olive oil into my protein smoothies.

Hopefully this helps raise my HDL.

I just don't love the olive oil taste. I am trying though. Good tips, both ladies!

Thanks for the tips, will help many.

I add spices to the olive oil, heat 15 seconds in microwave, and then put on toast.

also mince an olive clove in olive oil and make my own garlic toast with brown berry 12 grain bread.

have you ever had "garbage toast" tomatoes, onions, garlic, green pepper, all chopped up fine (normally mixed in the grease from pork fat salted heavily, but I now make it in olive oil with sea salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, parsley, etc added)?

If you add 1 egg & a pinch of bs to your oatmeal and microwave 2minutes you can flip it onto a plate and slice it, as a bread.
I add peanut butter & sugar free preserves.

Where's Lori? - Mackinac Bridge (hit my virtual walk goal)

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

If you are a new spark friend, you should know that Iíve been walking off my weight. However, I needed a way to stay motivated, so I started a virtual walk to the Mackinac Bridge in July.

Iím a little behind on my blog update. I actually made it to the Mackinac Bridge on January 2nd and lost 25 lbs along the way.
Woo Hoo! I am 3 months ahead of schedule.

I still canít believe I have walked over 515 miles to get to the bridge.

Hereís are some interesting facts about the bridge:

ē The Mackinac Bridge is currently the third longest suspension bridge in the world.
ē The bridge opened on November 1, 1957, ending decades of the two peninsulas being solely linked by ferries.
ē Total Length of Bridge is 5 miles.
ē Painting of the bridge takes seven years, and when painting of the bridge is complete, it begins again.
ē Every Labor Day, two of the lanes of the bridge are closed to traffic and open to walkers for the Mackinac bridge walk.

I was bummed that after walking 515 miles that I couldnít walk the bridge since itís only opened to walk every Labor Day.

Hey, this is a virtual walk, I can doing anything. Iím walking da bridge!!!!

Here I goÖ

I hear something coming. Yippie, Iím getting rescued.

Woo Hoo, Iím saved. I asked the cute pilot if he could fly me home. He replied: ďNo way crazy lady, you can walk home. You walked all the way here, you can walk all the way homeĒ.

Oh well, later Mackinac Bridge. Maybe Iíll head to Mackinac Island for some famous Mackinac fudge. HmmmÖ a piece of fudge, not a pound (donít want any angry comments).

I need to get home before I turn the big 5-0! Wish me luck.

Revised my goal weight..am I crazy?

Friday, January 06, 2012

When I started Spark People, I set my goal weight to 170. I've always been comfortable with that weight. Well, I'm 4.6 pounds away from my original goal but crazy me just changed it today to 160. I'm thinking that I have the tools and support available that will allow me to hit my new goal. Another 10 pounds would push me out the overweight BMI category into the normal one.

How am I going to accomplish this new goal? I will finish my 5% Winter Challenge strong and sign up for the 5% Spring Challenge.

Fit-by-50!!!

This is awesome. I set my goal weight on the high side, too, so I wouldn't get too discouraged. I planned to reevaluate goal weight when I get within sight of it. It seems so far away.
You are doing well. Congratulations on your progress. You are an inspiration to the rest of us.

I deliberately set my initial weight loss goal at the high end of my range (160). I remember being 165 in my very early 20s and comfortable, if a bit squeezed in my clothing. But I also remember being 150 in high school and not being underweight - just not athletic or fit.

As you get closer to where you truly feel you should be, you'll find you worry less about a target number of pounds and start looking for other ways to measure your continually improving health and fitness levels.

Winter 5% Challenge Ė December Results

Saturday, December 31, 2011

December turned out to be a great month for me. I hit my goal for the year of 25 pounds and walked 500 miles. This month was not easy, so I had to push myself extra hard by:

1. When it was too cold outside to walk, I bundled up and hit the cold pavement anyway. Only wiped out once on the ice.

2. When I wanted to sleep in on the weekends, I would lie in bed and think about how good yoga makes me feel. That would always get me out of bed and off to yoga class.

3. When I didnít want to go to the gym, I asked sparkers for a good kick in the pants. They always come through.

4. When I enjoyed some holiday treats I balanced them with healthy food, lots of water, and more intense exercise.

December Results:

1. Lost 5.2 pounds (Over half way point for 5% challenge)

2. Lost 2Ē on waist

3. Lost 1Ē on hips

4. Lost .5Ē on thighs

5. BMI dropped from 27.6 to 26.7

6. Waist-to-hip ratio dropped from .90 to .88

To loose weight, 5 lbs. no less, during the month of December is really a big thing. I have always had trouble in fall and early winter, even without holiday eating. I am impressed. Great job!
