High-risk to Low-risk in 1 year!

Monday, July 30, 2012

My father passed away from heart disease. My mother takes 10+ prescription medications, most of which are heart related. All my siblings are all on cholesterol and blood pressure medications. You could say the writing was on the wall for me.

A year ago my doctor wanted to put me on cholesterol medication. He said I was at high-risk for heart disease based on my total cholesterol. I asked him to give me a fighting chance to lower it by making healthy lifestyle changes instead of taking medication. He agreed but wanted me to do a blood test every 3 months to check progress. I became a full-blown Sparkie after that physical.

I started walking and making better food choices. I tracked both food and fitness and became active on SP. I found it very helpful to join team challenges and even become a team leader. It was a challenging year; I hit many bumps along the way but never gave up. Giving up was never an option. I had my eye on the prize and that was my health.

At every 3 month checkpoint, my cholesterol markers slowly improved. My latest blood test results came in the mail on Saturday. After I opened it up, the happy dance began. emoticon

My best report:

Total Cholesterol: 184 (desirable)
Triglycerides: 58 (normal)
HDL: 63 (optimal)
LDL: 109 (near optimal)
Radio of cholesterol/HDL: 2.9 (low risk!!!!!)

It took one year and hard work to accomplish this and I’m not going back. I’m hooked on health.

Fight the good fight! emoticon

emoticon and my sparkies!

My total cholesterol is in a good range, but I'm very envious of your HDL and Triglyceride numbers. Hopefully mine will improve too over time.

ML, I am SOOO PROUD OF YOU!

It's apparently the "American Way" to abuse one's health and then expect the medical community to fix it.

YOU HAVE TAKEN CONTROL. I hope your family will take a page from your book and see that a family history of a disease does not make it inevitable!

WOO HOO WOO HOO WOO HOO! I am joining in on your happy dance!

Vacation planning...what a difference a year makes

Thursday, July 26, 2012

I'm planning a trip to Chicago with my family. We love big cities and will be staying downtown.

What a difference a year makes. Over a year ago I would be planning what restaurants to hit. Now I'm planning how to get my exercise in.

emoticon - We could rent bikes and ride along the lake shore. Bike tour sounds fun.

emoticon - We are walking everywhere (except nighttime)

I love Chicago! Hope you have fun and way to go with such a great victory! We are planning a trip through the midwest in a month and I have also found myself focusing on the "how do I get in my exercise" question over all the other planning questions. Still feels strange! :)

I love big cities too (we live in a rural area), and find the WALKING really helps keep the weight gain minimal.

Summer 5% Challenge halfway checkpoint

Monday, July 23, 2012

Not really happy with halfway checkpoint. I’m on target with weight but my waist-to-hip ratio just went in the wrong direction.

Weight: 164 (Down 5.8…still on target)

Waist: 33.5” (stayed same)
Hips: 39” to 38”

Hip to waist ratio: .87 to .89 (85+ is considered high risk)

I’m considered to be a "normal" weight but my waist-to-hip ratio still puts me at high risk. I’m at a higher risk since I only lost inches at my hips and not waist.

I want to be an avocado! emoticon

It's annoying at times how our bodies pick and choose where to trim the fat. You're doing very well otherwise, and every bit helps - even if the ratio has temporarily gone in the wrong direction.

I am proud of you for the weight loss. My body has always been an avocado, big hips, small waist. I am loosing weight in my waist with this challenge, which puts me where I need to be. I will have to check out these waist to hip ratio facts. Thanks

I can totally relate! I'm still not at my goal weight, but it's been frustrating to continue being an apple. I'm thrilled to be losing inches, but when your waist and hips lose inches in the same proportion, you don't get any closer to being an avocado - let alone a pear!

Free pizza at my gym tonight. Seriously? OMG!

Monday, July 02, 2012

I pushed myself out the door this evening to go to the gym because the left over cold pizza was calling my name. "Lori, You know you love cold pizza...come here. Eat me!". I didn't have any yesterday and wasn't going to let it tempt me today.

I walked into the gym and stopped dead in my tracks. Oh crap!!! It's the first Monday of the month. It's FREE PIZZA NIGHT at Planet Fitness. PF has free pizza once a month. So I walked by a table full of ladies chowing down on pizza. Next to them is table with at least 12 large pizza boxes.

Can someone please explain to me why PF does this? And the bigger question is why members eat it. I just don't understand. Yea, I want to workout and then eat 500+ calories of pizza.

I was planning to workout a full hour but it got cut short. The entire place smelled like pizza. I couldn't take it anymore. I would rather smell sweaty armpits than pizza during my workout. Seriously!

The answer is NO! I didn't grab a slice when I left.

Sorry for the rant. Junk food at a fitness facility is my pet peeve! If they want to give something away for Free, give away water bottles.

Just say NO to emoticon.

Serve free pizza--people eat it (of course they do most people can't resist free stuff)--they gain weight (and wonder why)--keep spending money at your gym to lose it--free pizza again--its a vicious cycle!! lol

Congrats on resisting the pizza temptation!

That is crazy that they serve pizza at a gym. Are they trying to encourage gym members to socialize? Couldn't they do that by having a buffet with fresh fruit instead? A friend had wanted me to join PF, but now I'm glad I joined the place that I did. :-)

GIRLALLIN 7/2/2012 10:45PM

First, good for you for resisting. I would have probably worked out "harder" (but not really) and rationalized a slice.
Second, you'd think the gym could do pizza but show you how to do it in a "healthy" way, like whole-wheat crust, half the cheese, extra veggies. Maybe they feed you so you get fat and keep coming back thinking you'll work it off (see point one)? I know I read this on Spark somewhere: You can't exercise your way out of a bad diet. emoticon

Wow!! Never heard of such a thing! -- And outside my gym is a reader board about running groups and summer workout opportunities.

It's one thing to give away these free / sample "meal" bars (that should rightfully be called CANDY bars!), and another thing to promote poor nutrition. Though, arguably, one is not that different than the other...

It is kind of like the checkout stands at the grocery stores filled with a myriad of candy choices--putting it all right in your face. (I used to say out loud, when my kids were younger & would ask: "obviously the store wants you to handle their junk since they put it there for kids to beg for!?!")

Guess we could all rant about society speaking out of both sides of their mouth, so to speak! (hahaha) We question why there is so much obesity, and then we promote GARBAGE for food at every turn.

We have to figure out how to put on our own "blinders" so we can focus on the nutrition that MATTERS!

Sorry about your negative experience. -- I would question the intent of a gym that promotes "free pizza"!

Well, you obviously make a VALID POINT. Can't you complain to the management? Put a complaint in the suggestion box? The obvious contradiction between their mission and their actions should make them ashamed of themselves! Why not first Monday veggie & dip night?

But -- (1) they want to do something "fun" and "different" and (2) pizza is cheap.

But really, this is horrible. If you complain I'm sure they'll say something like "Well, all food in moderation" but YOU know they are in the wrong and THEY know they are in the wrong. No one should have to put up with this at the gym. If you do complain I hope you'll let us know what response you get.

There are a couple of Butterfly team members (GEMINISUE & TRAVELGRRL) that haven't added me.
