Waist to Hip Ratio - Estimator for Health Risk

Saturday, October 29, 2011

My doctor for the longest time has told me that my waist-to-hip ratio (WTH) is a good estimator for my health. Where you store your body fat is a predictor of health risk. So I checked to see if spark people had any information on this and quess what? Of course there's info (and a calculator).

Waist-to-Hip Info:

Waist-to-Hip Calculator:

I remeasured myself today and lost 7 inches total and improved my WTH score a little. I'm still an apple shape which means I'm at high risk. Time to kick it up a notch. I want to be an avocado by the end of the year.

What shape are you?

I'm finding the measuring to be making a difference for me this time around. Usually, I only let the scale determine how I feel, but this time I'm looking at other factors and it's giving me perspective.

Where's Lori? – Virtual walk update to da bridge

Friday, October 07, 2011

If you are a new spark friend, you should know that I’ve been trying to walk off my weight. However, I needed a way to stay motivated, so I started a virtual walk to the Mackinac bridge (pronounced ‘Mackinaw’). Now if you glance at my map below you are probably wondering if I know where the bridge is (Hint, it’s much further north). I decided to take a scenic route by walking along Lake Michigan’s coastline. About a month ago I stopped by my alma mater WMU and partied with some frat bro’s (see my prior post). They kicked me out (there loss).

Well I made it to this month’s target, South Haven (Lake Michigan). emoticon

I can’t go to Lake Michigan without doing some fishing and going for a swim.

Yeah, finally caught the big one (fish, that is).

Now for a swim. Hope it’s not too cold. Outside temperature today is in the 70s (I love late summer).

I really do need to tan my face and take off that knife belt. Ok, I will confess. That is not my body. emoticon

Time to check out downtown South Haven.

I like South Haven and fall time in Michigan. Look, someone painted my face on a pumpkin.

Off to my next target….Holland (44 miles). Hope to pass some Sparkers on the way. Maybe I can get there in time for some Trick-or-Treating. I wonder what I should dress up as?

So long South Haven….I’m spreading the spark to Holland.

Where in Michigan is Lori? Virtual walk update.

Friday, September 09, 2011

My virtual walk to the Mackinac bridge has taken me to Bronco country. 138 miles walked so far.

This was my old stomping ground many many…many years ago.

I spent many hours at the computer center at Rood Hall so I had to stop by.

I walked down to the Valley dorms and found some freshman moving in. I needed some extra fitness minutes so I decided to help out.

The freshman students were so grateful that they invited to join in some new student campus games.

Got really thirsty so I decided to stay for a party. Woo Hoo!

I shouldn’t have yelled “Toga”. The frat brothers realized how old I was and kicked me out. Oh well, I’m off to Lake Michigan.

So long K-zoo, South Haven here I come!

You are so freaking awesome. I just adore the pics. Say hello to my son Henry when you swing back by WMU. I miss him and he could use a hug from a fellow sparker.

So long, farewell, adios and goodbye!

Saturday, August 13, 2011

I’m not leaving Spark People but saying goodbye to high cholesterol (my life-sucking enemy).

For the past year, I’ve been battling an extreme low thyroid level and a rising cholesterol level. In July my thyroid level finally came back normal however my cholesterol was at my record high. My doctor wrote a little note on my report stating that “we need to talk” at my physical next month. I knew exactly what that meant….medication. No way, Jose! I’m not going on cholesterol medication. It’s time for a fight. emoticon

High cholesterol is my enemy and I was determined to win this battle. I had four weeks before my annual physical. The very next day I started Sparking. So for the next four weeks I ate more whole foods, stayed within my calorie range, and walked (and walked, and walked, and walked). I logged over 60+ miles. emoticon

At my dreaded physical I explained to my doctor what I was doing. He never heard of Spark People. Well, of course, I had to spread the Spark. I was surprised when the topic of medication never came up. He told me that he wanted to give me a fighting chance.

Yesterday, my cholesterol report from my physical came in. After only four weeks of Sparking:

• Total Cholesterol dropped 22 points
• Triglycerides dropped 30 points
• HDL improved by 13 points
• LDL improved by 9 points.

Note from doctor stated to “continue same diet and exercise plan”. Woo hoo! I can handle that.

I’m not out of the woods yet. I still need to improve my numbers more but I know I’m heading down the right path. I have 3 months until my follow-up test and I’m going to do it.

Take that High Cholesterol! emoticon

emoticon Fight the good fight. emoticon

That's great!! So glad you are seeing such important NSVs!! I have to go see my doctor on Friday for follow-up from blood tests he did about 6 weeks ago (2 weeks after I started Spark). His nurse called and said he wanted me to come in to discuss the results from my blood tests, which means that something must not have been normal. But I don't know what. I'm not sure what to think. Everything was normal at my last test (about 18 months ago). But I'm guessing it's either cholestrol or blood sugar. Both of these should be improved now versus 6 weeks ago. I'm planning to print out a bunch of my SparkPeople reports and take them with me on Friday. And hopefulyy he's willing to take a "wait and see" attitude and let me fix this problem myself.

Virtual Walk to the Mackinac Bridge

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Since I’ve been doing so much walking, I decided to do a virtual walk up north to the Mackinac Bridge. I love Lake Michigan so I’m heading west first so I can walk along the lake. If I pass any of my spark buddies along the way, say hello and send me a water bottle.

Presently, I’m walking through Albion and heading to Bronco country.

Kalamazoo here I come!

emoticon emoticon emoticon 85 miles walked!
