Goals..I need a few!

Monday, August 27, 2012

In Spark Live class this past week one of the challenges was to review your goals or set some if you haven't any.
I need to do this so here goes...

1. Stay within my calorie range..by TRACKING!!!! I haven't been tracking consistently so here is what I am going to do. I am going to pay myself. I am going to put in a jar 1 dollar every day I track my food. Incentive..you betcha. I can use this money at the end of the year for anything I want.
2. Strength train. I was always so good about ST twice a week and that has fallen off. NO MORE! I never miss my runs so there is no reason I can't be consistent with my ST.
3. Cut back to one treat a day. Sugar wise I am eating too much of it. Even if I am in my calorie range I want to limit this. Choose better...yup!

I will add to this as I think of things. I need to lose 10 pounds and this will definitely help!

So here I go..wish me luck!

    Anne,

I hear ya!

One of the things that I must do for myself is to participate in a minimum of three SparkPeople Live! meetings per week, which I have been adhering to.

In this morning's meeting when we were reviewing how we did on last week's challenge, I had to fess up and tell the group: "I didn't do crap!"

I do track religiously, but following through on the meeting challenges still escapes me....I am still too stubborn to make it a written goal!

But your blog is getting me ready for it!

5 Things I love about me...revisited.

Monday, August 06, 2012

So in our spark Live class last week we all seemed to be having difficulty coming up with things that we love about ourselves when asked. So Bobby decided that it was time for all of us to blog about the 5 things we love about ourselves again. I figured I had better do it since I am married to the man! Plus I am in serious need of a lift and this might help! So here goes!

1. I love exercise! Seriously..before spark people I would never have said that but now..I love to exercise. After my run..I feel great! After a strength training session...I feel great. You get the idea. It is amazing the changes you can make and that they become a habit!
2. I am a good friend. I love spending time with my friends and my sisters. And of course my best friend..Bobby!
3. I am consistent. I schedule my workouts, I schedule my cleaning and organizing at home and I do my best to get them done. I like to have things scheduled like an appointment and then it gets done. I am a run smoothly kind of gal!
4. But on that note of running smoothly..I think that I have learned later in life to not let it upset me when things don't go so smoothly. So I guess I can say that I don't let the little things upset me. Less stress that way!
5. I am compassionate. I hope I always will be. I have tried to raise my boys with this quality and sometimes I worry I don't see enough from them. I hope that maturity will help that.

So there they are.
Hmmm...I do feel better now!

Very interesting comparing this list to your previous one....you seem to have expressed much less anxiety over writing this one!

On one of the few teams that I participate on, one of the discussion threads is: "I am proud of me today because...." I find that this is one of the most beneficial discussion forums for me; it creates the same uncomfortable feelings that writing the "5 things I Love about me" does!

Great exercise to get us out of our comfort zones!

As always,

Saving bucks on healthy groceries. Live class challenge.

Monday, April 23, 2012

So as the title says we are to blog about ways we save on healthy groceries. I have been thinking on this and Bobby and I have made some changes to help our budget.
One thing we attempt to do (but still need to do more often) is plan our meals for the week. That way we have a list of ingredients needed and stick to it.

We also try to hit the reduced racks. There is one in the produce department that has some slightly bruised or marked produce. We just cut away the bad parts and use it.

The meat department will have reduced prices on some things if they are close to their "use by" dates. We will purchase them and then freeze. If we buy large amounts we divide into serving sizes (or make the ground turkey/meats into patties) and freeze. This makes it easy to just pull out what you need and cook.

We do buy generic or store brands on a lot of items. We have learned which products we like just as well or even better in generic. For example Bobby loves the store brand oatmeal better than the name brands.

I think the best way to save is to plan ahead before you even enter the store and to be diligent in looking for the best bargains offered at the time.

Good luck on your next shopping trip Sparkers!

Here's how we save: buy no beverage! Michael Pollan, when asked recently by a reporter what eco-friendly, healthy item would he recommend that could be gotten at a fast food restaurant said: "Tap water!" All we need is water. Spend nothing on all those high-carbon-footprint beverages and you can afford your fresh freggies! :-)

You will often find items in bulk at health food stores. We have been surprised how much less expensive oatmeal and oat bran is at the local health food store. we compare prices per pound and buy in bulk. Dried herbs and spices are almost always a better buy there too. If we are wanting to just try a new spice or herb it is almost always available in the spice drawers you can buy a single serving amount almost.
I know my grocery store I know when the food is delivered and if I want something fresh it is Tuesday and if I want something reduced I go on Monday morning,
I am happy to find others who find it realistic to plan ahead.
I never do coupons, they are mostly for overly processed over priced items we do not want to eat, so we never buy magazines we can get them at the library. So many enjoyable ways to EAT RIGHT. Thanks for the nice blog, it was refreshing . Pat in Maine, emoticon emoticon

Celebrating biopsy results

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

A few short weeks ago I went to my doctor for my annual checkup. I LOVE this doctor. He is so sweet and I truly trust him. So when he suggested some tests for some concerns he had I was surprised. I kept telling him that it was probably back issues from running and working out but he wasn't being persuaded. So I had a test scheduled to check my ovaries (sorry if TMI) and figured I would have my yearly mammogram also. So the testing was done..and I left feeling quite uneasy. Something about the way the tech was acting scared the heck out of me. I tried to convince myself that I was overreacting. So when my doctor called with the results I didn't expect what I heard. The ovaries were fine (although they couldn't find one..weird) but my mammogram showed a cluster. WHAT?? That's not what I was worried about...REALLY? So off I went for another, more extensive mammo. After the pictures I was told to wait for the doctor at the clinic. Scary! She told me that they needed to do a stereotactic biopsy. She explained the procedure and explained that the cluster is sometimes what your body does to form around cancer. She also said that most of them are benign. I sure was hoping so!
So I asked if we could wait for 2 weeks. JASR was the next week and I didn't want to miss running that! She said that would be fine but not to wait too long. The plan was to not mention it to many people. Just a few close friends. But the stress of all the things...JASR planning, the upcoming biopsy and maybe a glass of wine or two led me to mention it to quite a few of my friends. Sorry about that! But you all are great and SO incredibly supportive. And thank you for that!
So last week I had the biopsy and waited for the results. There was a lot of praying for me by a lot of people and I thank you and I thank God for blessing me with negative results! I am a lucky lady indeed!
I celebrated with a nice 4 mile run today!
To borrow a phrase from a good spark friend...
LIFE IS GOOD!!!

Anne

I'm glad that the results were good. A few years ago they discovered s "spot" in my mammogram and decided to just monitor it in a year to see if it had grown. Luckily it did not grow so they decided that it must be benign.
