But we could have hummingbirds

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

This is the right side of my garden. I bought a hummingbird feeder but it has not attracted any birds so far so I am going to go over and get some plants that attract humming birds. Then between the plants and the feeders, ( i am going to get more) I may have some humming birds.
We went to Washington, California to a hotel that was near the gold mines back toward the end of the 18 hundreds. So Grover Cleveland plus Wyatt Earp
and his wife Josephine stayed there. THey have the old register to prove it.
It is along the Yuba River and they have humming bird feeders. They had a crew that were just delightful along the edge of the most scenic river views.
With rocks and little cascading water falls.
We forgot the camera. Oh well go visit it yourself it is on line.
You can get a rustic room with the W/C down the hall.

Could it be the type of feeder you bought? I have 2 humming bird feeders, they have different shapes, but they are both at the same level at each end of a very long balcony. One is is hourglass-shaped, made of transparent plastic only, quite plain, with just 2 small holes on opposite sides for them to sip the nectar from (it was quite cheap too!). The other has a red base and yellow plastic flowers all around to sip from and a large transparent base at the top.Fancy and expensive. An entire family of humming birds has been coming to the plain one for years. The other has been totally ignored for years!! If I switch the feeders around I still get the same result, so it seems to be the feeder, not the location.

MY garden Last week in July

This is one of the raised beds I have put in my garden.
The soil is clay and it is squishy in the rain and adobe in the summer.
So I have been trying to build it up. I have quit trying to fix the existing soil.I have bought good soil and filled up the raised beds.
then I replanted the plants that were not doing well in the native soil.
Let's see how these plants do that have been in the soil since the first of May do in the raised bed. I just love to garden. I can spend hours just puttering around. I can spend hours mowing, weed eating, digging out weeds etc.

Looking good! I started new raised beds with fresh soil this year. I didn't get mine planted until early June. It has been a cool and wet summer here. The peas and pole beans have just started flowering. There are several baby tomatoes. Lots of squash flowers but no fruit yet.

Are you talking about the white thing that looks like it is sitting on top of the vines?

Suppose you see my back yard with the crepe myrtle in bloom and the ivy growing up the neighbor's trees.( I trim up my side but they never do)
The vegetables are actually producing except the squash which only produces male flowers. Good thing they are good eating when I get them on the first day. I have decided to purchase mainly pink flowering plants but many are too small to discern the color until you are up close. THe sunflower is heavy with seed. I am ready to pick the japanese eggplant to put in the tomato and onion stir fry for dinner.
I will try again for the picture tomorrow.

You posted a "picture" of your garden with your words, but a real picture would be nice too.

Enjoy your garden.

My favorite things

Saturday, August 01, 2009

I had some work done on my home. The first thing we did was have a hugh digger pine removed. It was cracking all the cement. we put on a new roof, a new central air and painted. Then we ran out of money and had to do other things as needed. But what I love is I got to do all the yard work pretty much myself. ( I had a guy plant my trees) But I mow and trim and decide where everything goes. I like the naturalized look of the ivy climbing over the fence. I even like the rose climbing into the scrub oak volunteer.
I could not do this years ago I had gotten hurt I could barely push a lawn mower from one side of my very small lawn to the other. I put chairs on both sides so I could rest. But I let my body heal. I took vitamins. I tried everything. But I still could not loose weight until Spark.
I will be talking about this for a while.

    Fantastic,
I am so happy for you. I am sure it feels very good to look at your yard (that you love) and know you did it yourself.
Congrats. emoticon
