H2O kickboxing and Tai Chi

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Last night I went with a friend to her gym and took a fun and new-to-me fitness class - water kickboxing and water Tai Chi. Since it was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, there were only four of us. Usually the class is a lot busier, she told me. While I still prefer kickboxing on land (I feel like I get a better workout) it was interesting to see how different the class is with the resistance of the water. This club also has water step aerobics, which I cannot wait to try. As for the Tai Chi, I have never done it before so I can't compare to what it is like on land. But it is definitely something I would love to try on land. I thought it was very cool.

I am looking forward to Thanksgiving tomorrow. I plan to do a morning workout and not gorge myself during the big meal. But I am also going to enjoy the food and not stress too much about calories. My goal is simply to eat mindfully and have reasonable portions.

Have you ever tried Tai Chi? Or any cool water fitness classes?
Happy Thanksgiving to all my wonderful Spark friends!

No, I have never taken Tai Chi or any water classes. I'm allergic to chlorine so most pools are completely off-limits to me!

I'll definitely stick to kickboxing on land. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving too!!

No, I've never tried Tai Chi and haven't taken any water kickboxing or step aerobics classes. I'd imagine it would be sort of weird. I think I'm going to be doing some land step aerobics today as part of the circuit training DVD I plan to do.
Excellent Thanksgiving plans....maybe because mine are the same and you know great minds....
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Nibbling at the Cooking Show

Monday, November 15, 2010

Happy Monday, SparkPeople!
I hope all of you had a nice weekend! I am planning 2 visits to the gym today. I did not go all weekend, so I want to make up some time. :)

I have no idea how many calories I consumed yesterday. Dinner was around 450 calories. I had a small breakfast (mini pancakes with almond butter and milk) but for lunch I did not really have a meal, just tiny bites of various foods, which I know adds up. I went to the The Metropolitan Cooking Show in D.C. where I sampled an assortment cupcakes, cookies, jams, nuts, BBQ sauces, marinades and various other random foods. It was fun but very crowded and people were ridiculous — cutting in line and shoving people out of the way for teeny samples of food like they will never eat again! It is funny how crazy people get when something "free" is being given out.

Rachael Ray, Paula Deen and Bobby Flay also were there, doing cooking demonstrations and signing books. You had to buy separate tickets for those events, which we did not do. We saw a bit of Rachael's presentation on the screen. There were also some gaps in the curtain sectioning off the area so I took a quick peek. Surprisingly the show was not sold out...lots of empty seats in the back. You would think they would have tried to sell those seats last minute at a discounted price. In any case, it was cool that she was there. At one point, just as we were sampling some cakes from a bakery based near Atlanta, all of a sudden Paula Deen walked past us with her security people and went into the bakery's booth. Within a split second, a huge swarm of people had gathered there, with cell phone cameras out. We ducked out of the crowd and got out of that area fast. LOL.

I feel much better about my eating plan for this week. We went to a produce market in the suburbs where they sell beautiful looking produce for great prices and stocked up on lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, grapefruit, mangoes, clementines, grapes, pears, kiwi, a ginormous pomegranate, and probably some other things that I am forgetting. They sell mostly produce but they also have a good selection of European foods. I don't know why we do not go there more often. It might become a regular grocery stop for us after Trader Joe's, which is not always the best place to buy all your fruit and veggies.

Well, I am off to feed the baby breakfast and then to the gym we go!

It sounds like you had a great time at the show!
People are crazy when it comes to free stuff, especially food.
Good job at the produce market. Trader Joe's does have very limited produce section but it has gotten a lot bigger I've notice.
We tried going to the new Whole Foods near us on Saturday and there was big line outside and nowhere to park in the lot. It was ridiculous. We ended up going to Trader Joe's instead.
Have fun at the gym!

The cooking show sounds like a lot of fun. I know what you mean about how ridiculous people get about free stuff. Some people act like they haven't eaten for days!

I envy you being so close to DC. I love that area, and I wish it wasn't so far from us.

Have a great week!

Why do I get lazy in the afternoon?

Friday, November 05, 2010

I've realized something about myself. I am a morning exerciser and if I miss a morning workout I lose my groove. I tell myself I will work out later, but about 70 percent of the time I don't. I want to figure out why that is and change it.

Yesterday my DH saved me. I did not go to the gym in the morning because it was dreary, rainy and cold outside. And since I walk there with Laila, it wasn't an option. It continued to rain all day so I assumed I was not going to go. But DH came home from work early - with the car! - and dragged my butt to the gym in time for 5:00 Body Combat. When I got there, a surprise was in store for me. The usual class was not going on. Different instructor, different music. I walked in with a perplexed look, and one of the other girls I often see in the class waved me in. "It's still kickboxing. It's fun. You'll like it." OMG it was so much fun!! The class waskind of a fusion of kickboxing and zumba. It was called Cardio Kickboxing and it was a killer workout. Constantly moving, jumping around, fast-paced, high impact. The instructor had so much energy! I loved it. My usual class will still be there on Thursdays. This was just something they were trying out - a special engagement of sorts. The instructor is a personal trainer at one of the other locations and he also teaches the class there. They told me they are trying to get him to teach at our club too. Would be cool! I love it when they offer fun new classes. I get stuck in a rut sometimes.

So glad it is Friday! Looking forward to watching What Not to Wear. Ah, the life of a mommy. :)

It's funny how individually, we have different preferences of workout times. I, too, am a morning person for sure. But last night, after a big dinner and being pretty inactive ALL day, I decided to try something different... Rather than plop my butt on the couch where I would spend the rest of the evening watching TV with my DH, I pushed myself to go the gym instead! I went on the elliptical for 30 minutes and ran for 10. Came home feeling GREAT and rejuvenated... and wondering why I don't get myself to do this more often! Sometimes, we just need to get out of our normal-routine-rut and mix things up! I'm proud of you for making it to the gym and happy you were pleasantly surprised with the fun class!

I too, am glad it's Friday. I can definitely use the weekend (and the extra hour).
Thank you for the What Not to Wear reminder. It seems like it hasn't been on in ages. I will definitely have to watch.

Whenever I end up stepping out of my "routine", I seem to lack motivation too. Good for you for going even though you didn't feel like it! And you were rewarded with an AWESOME workout! YAY!

I'm not a mom, but I look forward to my Friday night TV shows too. :)

BOO for dreary weather - YAY for fun cardio-kickboxing!! I'm a fan of punching and kicking! emoticon (my leg doesn't go this high!)

I'm also the same way with exercise - it is SO much harder for me to do it in the afternoon. Maybe because of the routine I've built. That part of my day is when I typically wind down, Karl comes home from work, we eat, watch some tv or play a board game - then he's in bed between 9-10pm because he gets up so early.

It's gloomy and rainy here this morning, but I think I will pop in my Zaki cardio-kickboxing dvd! Thanks for the great idea!

Have a wonderful day - AND weekend!

Quiet morning to myself & felt like blogging...

Happy Halloween everyone!

For the first time in my Halloween life, I will not be giving out candy to the trick-or-treaters. I had intended to buy candy, but last week I was at Kohl's and they had these cute little play-doh packages for Halloween as well as mini card games. I decided to pick those up instead. I hope I have enough, and I hope I don't get any teenagers because they WILL be disappointed.

I also don't have a costume for my little one. I decided that she did not need one because she won't be trick-or-treating and therefore it did not make sense to spend money on a costume that she will not wear again. But now, as late as it is, I am regretting my decision. There will be fun events going on this weekend for the kids. Plus, since she IS walking now, it might be kind of fun to take her trick-or-treating (but give away the candy, of course). I have a couple of ideas. She has a tutu, a white onesie and some pink tights, so she could be a ballerina. We do not have the shoes, though, or anything else to complete the costume. She also has an Ohio State cheerleader outfit, so she could go as that. I am leaning toward the ballerina. I am so NOT creative when it comes to costumes or anything crafty...

On the healthy living front, I am doing OK but could be better. I have woefully neglected the gym in the past couple of weeks. I do a lot of walking but it is not getting my heart rate up to where I feel like it is a workout. I am planning to go to the gym this morning. Food-wise, I am doing all right, but could cut down on the sweets. Things to work on, for sure. I want to set a new fitness goal for myself. Something new to stay motivated.

I hope all of you have a great weekend! : emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Sounds like you're living the busy life of a happy mommy! I love when I can create the kids' costumes...but admit that time often escapes me and I end up buying something. This weekend, we're not trick or treating because my daughters have a cheer competition all day Sat out of town, but we went the second weekend of Oct at a campground, so they still go to dress up, strut their stuff, and get lots of food. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of NON junk stuff...pencils, apple, crackers, popcorn, pretzels. Of course, there was plenty of candy as well...but more healthier options that usual. Goof for you for doing that as well!!!

You can't cut down on the sweets THIS week! Enjoy your little break from the gym (I have done the same) and you have MY permission to be bad this week - It's impossible to avoid ALL Halloween candy, right? BUT... after this week, it does sound liek a new fitness goal is due, as JUDYFRANCE said. You'll get there though... You always do!

By the way, I LOVE your idea of play-doh for the kiddos instead of candy! And do you have an Old Navy near you??? I got Devint he cutest "bee" costume for just 17 bucks!

I'm lucky in that we get zero trick-or-treaters. No temptation there! Although my husband and I do go trick-or-treating with our nieces and nephews and they get huge bags of candy! It's insane!

A new fitness goal can definitely be some good motivation!

AWESOME job on the Halloween treats this year! What a great way to not have leftover goodies lurking around your house! I'll have to remember that next year! I remember one of my neighbors used to give out unfrozen freeze pops. I used to LOVE going there because she'd save a green one for me. Definitely not easy to binge on freeze pops! This year I didn't buy ANY chocolate so that I wouldn't go crazy on the left overs! :)

I hope you take lots of pictures of Laila in whatever costume you decide on! I'm glad you decided to dress her up! It's fun even if you don't take her trick-or-treating!

Now, GET TO THAT GYM TODAY!!!!

I'm glad Laila's going to dress up for Halloween! I had a feeling you might regret it. I think Miss Laila will make a beautiful ballerina. Take lots of pictures!

Re. your workout--do you have a jogging stroller? I'm sure that Laila would love to go running with you. Does your gym have any "Mommy and Me" fitness classes? If you pair your workout with some one-on-one time with Laila, it will be so much more rewarding for you.

Happy Halloween! emoticon

Haven't blogged in a while

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Last week I sort of took another "break" from Spark and exercise. I still logged in and tracked my food somewhat but I didn't blog or spend too much time here, and I only made it to the gym one day. emoticon But sometimes these little breaks are good for recharging the batteries, so to speak. So...I have missed you, Sparkfriends! What is new??

We have had BEAUTIFUL weather here the past few days. I have been doing a LOT of walking lately. With my mommy friends and my family. Taking advantage of the amazing weather. Today is rainy, but I am hoping it will taper off like it is supposed to. I hope to make it to Zumba class this afternoon.

Saturday was the marathon here. We are near mile 15. I always love to go out to watch and cheer the runners on. We saw the leaders go by. Wheeeew, they are FAST. I cannot imagine running a full marathon, let alone coming in first. Yes, somebody does. I wonder what it takes to do it. How much they train. What they eat in preparation. How they make it through at such a speed. I would love to sit down and talk twith a first-place marathoner.

I am excited to report that I am down another pound. I have 3 more to go until I hit my original pre-pregnancy goal weight. Woo hoo!

I always thought I wanted to do a marathon, but after hiking those 12 some miles, I don't want to anymore! OW. I cannot imagine doubling that plus some. Double OW!

I'm glad you took a break - it's good to get away from it sometimes. I had a week away from the computer totally, and you know...it was good for me.

Congratulations on being so very close to your pre-pregnancy weight! That is awesome - truly.

We are having gorgeous weather here today, so I hope it hits your way tomorrow. Great walking weather!

Enjoy,
Karen

WELCOME BACK!

Sometimes, those occasional little breaks are good for the body and mind. I tend to lose a pound or two whenever I take a break Funny how that works, huh?

I hope you have a fun night zumba'ing! There's a zumba class at out gym, but I haven't yet been brave enough to give it a try. I'm afraid I'll look like a complete dork and turn around to find my husband laughing at me through the windows! Maybe I'll take a class on a night he's NOT with me. HA!

I would love to talk to those marathoners too. I managed to finish a half, but I don't think my body could actually survive the training and distance of a full marathon! I think it's amazing that they do it...and definitely wonder about the person who comes in first. The guy that came in first place in the marathon the day I did the half, completed it in about 2 hours 15 mins. That's CRAZY fast! How'd he do that?!?!?

Congratulations on the pound lost! You'll get those other 3 off! :)
