"But"

Wednesday, December 02, 2009

I hate that word, "but." After being on Spark for a while, I told myself that I would no longer use that word. It's the "buts" that held me back in the past. "I want to work out BUT I'm too tired." "I want to eat better BUT that burger looks so good." And so on. At one point early on in my Spark journey, I even looked at what I had written on my page and noticed how many buts I had listed and promptly reworded it, taking that dreaded word out. So why am I focusing my blog on it today? Well, I have to keep it from creeping back into my life. It's trying!!

For example
I want to work out BUT
- it's cold and rainy outside. HELLO Winter!
-baby is not ready for a jogging stroller
- don't want to take her to the gym kid zone for fear that she will scream the entire time or worse, get H1N1
- to dark to go out after DH gets home from work

I usually manage to sneak in a few minutes of fitness here and there, despite the above and today I have the perfect opportunity to work out. I'm all dressed in my workout clothes, the baby is sleeping, Turbo Jam is in the DVD player, BUT the DVD player won't work!

Well, instead of letting this BUT turn today into a no workout at all day, I will go grab my weights and do some lifts. I'll also improvise with some jumping jacks, kicks, punches, running in place in my living room while watching Ellen! Just cross your fingers that the baby continues to sleep for a little while longer.

Ruh roh! I'm off to check my own page for BUTS!! :) The only one I really like comes from my non-runners marathon trainer book...and that is to follow up any negative thought with "...but it doesn't matter".

AND! My Turbo Jam dvd started skipping and missing and it was so frustrating! I did like you - jumped around and kicked and punched...however, yesterday, I actually remembered to clean the dvd before popping it in, and it made all the difference!

You rock! :)

I wonder if you can bounce your baby while you sit on an exercise ball? That's something I never tried. It might be a good ab workout. Just by thinking about exercise you are doing way more than I ever did as a new mom. My baby was 11 before I did any working out.

Stealing a strategy from The Biggest Loser

Monday, November 23, 2009

GUM! I always crave sweets in the evening. I want to nip that in the bud, so I decided to try chewing gum instead. I knew that tip already but recently saw them do it on The Biggest Loser and decided, why not? And it works great! I got that new Trident gum with the layers of two different flavors. I know it's artificial crap, but it's kind of tough to find "natural" gum or "organic" gum (does that even exist?? LOL!) and I figure it's pretty difficult to OD on the stuff anyway. Right now I need to lose some weight and it has been helping me stay away from the cookies. Hot tea also helps me sometimes.

Speaking of The Biggest Loser, I'm excited to check out Jillian's new show next year. I heart Jillian so much. She is such an inspiration, especially this magazine photo, which I saw on her FB page. That should go up on my fridge and cabinet doors! :)

What else? Oh...Thanksgiving!! Yikes! I plan to work out that morning and then just be MINDFUL of what and how much I am putting in my mouth. We will be at my parents' house for the actual holiday (and I am not super worried about the big meal because they eat pretty healthy) and at my in-laws' for the rest of the weekend. Looking forward to seeing all the family!!!! :) :)

Have a great week, SparkBuds! And Happy Thanksgiving! All the best to you and those you love.

The gum trick does wonders for me- I just make sure to have tons of flavors on hand in case I getted burned out from it. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!

My gym will have all the regular exercise classes with the exception of Wednesday evening and all day Thursday. I will go to my usual Wednesday morning step aerobics and add the Zumba class I don't usually get to take. I will take Thanksgiving off. Then I will return to the gym for the Friday step aerobics class and maybe the weight training class if I can talk myself into it.

It sounds like you have a great plan in preparation of your Thanksgiving celebrations. Thanks for sharing the gum tip, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family!

Heh. It is hard to find "healthy" gum, isn't it? Funny, considering how useful it can be on this whole healthy lifestyle journey...

Believe it or not, I actually saw a weight control gum at Fred's, of all the places to have it.

I used to chew gum when I worked in the kitchen of a restaurant to avoid picking on food all day. Imagine how much food you can eat in and 8 hour shift. A few french fries for the customer...a few for me. A few fried mushrooms for the customer....well you get the picture. So I chewed huge pieces of bubble gum so that I did not stuff my face. Most days this worked, but some days it did not.

I recently got Berry Smoothie gum and it is fantastic. It doesn';t lose it's flavor after 30 chews. But I never thot to use it in place of a sweet dessert at night time. I will definitely try this strategy.

Appreciate you sharing it!

Gum has helped me too. I grew up having dessert after meals. I love deserts. I have had to find other things that have less calories, but make me feel like I am having dessert.

Tea and gum are my go-tos, also. A cup of specially-flavoured tea really works for me.

I'm a 'Clean Eating' recipe taste tester!

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

I get Clean Eating magazine, and in one of the issues they asked for readers to contact them if they wanted to be considered for their recipe testing panel. I sent them an e-mail a while back telling them I would be interested, and today they contacted me to ask if I still wanted to do it. Heck yeah! :) Basically they will send me some recipes that will or might be appearing in a future issue. I will then make a few of them and answer questions about how I liked them, etc. Fun!! Not only will I get some new healthy recipes to try, it will give me an extra incentive to cook at home. I got my first recipes tonight. They look yummy. :)

New Ellie book - yeah!!

Sunday, November 15, 2009

I'm a big Ellie Krieger fan, so I have been anxiously awaiting her new cookbook, "So Easy." When I pre-ordered the Spark book from Amazon, I just went ahead and pre-ordered Ellie's book too, along with a few things for the baby (cute whale tub!) . I'm sure Amazon loves us this year. Anyway...my book came recently, and at a lower price than when I initially ordered it. YAY!! I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but I've been excited to try it out because supposedly (as the title says) they are EASY and I am all about easy these days. I hope "easy" also means "quick." In any case, I hope to make a recipe or two this week or next weekend. I hope this one is as good as her previous cookbook "The Food You Crave," which won a James Beard award this year. Will update how they turn out.

I was at Chapters yesterday. Window shopping. I was thinking of asking Santa for a Mollie Katzen cookbook, but now I'll have to look up Ellie Krieger because easy sounds as good as vegetarian does. Keep us posted on your favourite recipes. Are you using a slow cooker or George Foreman grill these days? Those are two simple cooking machines I can't live without. My food processor is the third.

No More Trouble Zones = ouch!

Friday, November 13, 2009

I received Jillian's No More Trouble Zones from Netflix recently and yesterday I popped it in. What an awesome workout! I couldn't do all the exercises because I have a hardwood floor and no mat, but I attempted to do some of the floor exercises anyway and for the others just did other things instead. Well, it kicked my butt, Jillian style. I felt muscles I haven't felt in a long while - Hello triceps! All in all, glad I ordered it from Netflix and now I want to buy it to keep it around (along with an exercise mat). Laila had fun watching me, well till the very end (cooldown) and then she started to get fussy. I'm taking the exercise opportunities as they come. I truly hope it stops raining in time for my walk to the gym tomorrow morning. Saturday mornings are devoted to gym time. It's my "me" time. And I look forward to it all week.
Have an awesome weekend, Sparkpals!

I'm glad the Jillian workout DVD is effective for you! Good for you for looking for all the opportunities to exercise by using workout DVD's at home and going to the gym. You should be so proud of yourself! I am truly inspired by your determination and diligence.

I wish you a wonderful weekend! emoticon
