Figuring out my problem areas

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

It's been a while since I have blogged. I am down 14 pounds since my SP journey began, and I am so happy and grateful for that. But I am not losing as quickly as I want to be and after examining what might be going wrong, I've decided that I need to step it up with fitness and build more willpower when it omes to food. My current obstacles:
- Sweets - I've been good about not buying ice cream at the store (a major weakness for me), but I feel that sometimes all I've done is replace ice cream with something else I should not be eating: angel food cake (albeit with fruit), fudgsicles, cookies (even in the 100-cal packs, I am sure they are not the healthiest things for me and just feed my sweet tooth even more).
- The heat - I have been good about going to the gym and walking there and back, but this heat is unbearable and just slows me down to a crawl. Anyone else have this problem? I am going to try to set my alarm for 7 a.m. when it's cooler and see how that works.
- Staying within 1250-1500 calories is TOUGH. It seems like a tiny portion of almost anything is 100 calories or more, so even though it does not seem like I am eating a lot, it adds up and I find myself more often than not going above 1500. Not by much, but probably enough to stunt my progress. Ugghhhhh.
On the upside, I just spent a few days on vacation in Florida and despite having to go out to eat every day and not eating very healthfully during that time, I did not gain any weight! YAY!

Congrats on not gaining during vacation! I'm actually living in FL, so I know what you mean about the heat. Instead of walking/jogging outside (which I just can't bring myself to do now that full summer is here), I took up swimming to add variety to my exercise. So I mostly elliptical (indoors in the A/C, since I have one at home. Is your gym air conditioned?) 2-3 days/week, swim 1-2 days/week, and strength train / circuit train 2-3 days/week. Turning my strength training routine into an hour-long circuit training workout really helps me - I get to save time since I can count it as cardio as well as strength training. I do the whole thing at home in the A/C, starting with 5-10 minutes of jogging or dancing to get my heartrate up, and then just alternate each ST exercise with 1 minute of fast-paced cardio... my hr averages a nice aerobic pace for the whole 60 minutes!

Hey, I am really losing weight!

Friday, June 22, 2007

I have a couple of small successes to share:
1. I can see my cheekbones coming back! I've missed them!
2. I can take off my pants without unzipping or unbuttoning them...LOL! Time for a shopping trip!

Spark Wheel

Saturday, June 16, 2007

I love spinning the SP wheel every day. It's a silly little thing to do but it's so much fun! Today I won a bumper sticker! Woo hoo!

I have been really good about getting a lot of exercise this week. My new routine is to walk to the gym (about a mile away), then once there, get on the treadmill for 30-45 min. and then walk back. Later I walk my dog, sometimes close to where the gym is, but usually a little bit closer to home, depending on my mood. I don't count that as strenuous exercise, though, because she always has to stop and sniff every few minutes.

I love spinning that wheel too - funny huh! But I've never "won" anything - that's very cool. I've heard you can win water bottles and t-shirts....but I'm still waiting! LOL

Good exercise program. I'm impressed. I don't like walking too much, but then I don't have a dog! Two cats, no dog. I'm totally into swimming. And I like biking too. I walk once a week with my mom b/c that's what she's doing.....and I'll need to add it on as I continue on my journey toward prepping for my triathlon. It's just not my favorite thing to do.

But it's working for you! So that's great!!

Quit my job

Wednesday, June 06, 2007

Well, it's been a while since I've blogged. So much for my intentions of updating once a week! Between then and now, I quit my job and I must say, I have been enjoying the newfound freedom (until the reality of having no spending money sets in!!). I have done something positive with my free time as it relates to SP. I have been walking to and from the gym ( a little over a mile each way) and at the gym spending at least 30 minutes on the treadmill! Overall, over an hour of exercise a day! Woo hoo!
Also, last month I got lax about tracking my meals and I am happy to report that I am back on track with that as well. Feeling better that I am making positive progress.

Slowing down...

Sunday, April 22, 2007

The past week has been kind of disheartening because i know I am not doing as much as I could be for myself and my health. That celebratory trip to Israel is looking farther and farther away. Of course I know full well that I have to work for it. It's not that I am not willing to, it's just finding the time to do it all. A lot has been going on in the past week: busy with work, bought a new car, husband working long hours (we commute together), and lots of chores to do when there is free time. We are working to get our house up on the market soon.
I am aiming to do better this coming week. There should be time for everything; it's just a matter of prioritizing better. Tomorrow's a new day!
