Back from my trip

Wednesday, April 08, 2009

Late Monday night, hubby and I got back from our mini babymoon in Seattle. It rained Thursday (the day we arrived) but the rest of the weekend was absolutely perfect: sunny and in the low 70s! We couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather. We saw Mt. Ranier very clearly. Both of us love Seaattle so much! It's a beautiful place. It's also where we got engaged. :)

Anyway...I didn't do too well on the food front. Lots of junk at the airport and on the plane. We ate lovely and healthy dinners at our friends' house where we stayed. But when we ate out, it was not healthy at all. particularly not Chipotle or Red Robin. The great thing I noticed about Seattle is that restaurants (at least the chains) openly divulge their nutrition information. For example, at Red Robin a menu-sized listing of nutrition information was placed on the table along with our menus. Let me tell ya, it was SCARY! There are very few choices at Red Robin under about 800 calories. I ordered the least-ominous chicken sandwich, but I could have skipped the fries... Oh well. I beat myself up about my poor choices on the plane on the way back, and now I am over it and ready to start anew. I have to always remember that not only am I fueling my own body, I am providing nutrients for another little person who is completely dependent on me and the nutrition choices I make.
Tonight is the beginning of Passover, and it's a great opportunity to start over, so to speak. During passover, you're not supposed to eat things like bread, flour, beans and corn. For just this week, it will be a refreshing change in my diet to eat mostly veggies, fruits and eggs/protein and no bread products. It gets old, but it's only for a week.
I did walk around a lot during the trip, and also took advantage of our friends' treadmill. I'm hoping I didn't do too much caloric damage. I am, after all, supposed to be gaining weight right now (which I am). But I want to be careful not to gain too much or too quickly. I still have 19 weeks to gain more weight.

Thought I'd make you smile by letting you know that it's now back to colder weather and off and on drizzles in the Seattle area. Seems you picked the perfect weekend for your trip. Seriously, that's the nicest weekend we've had yet. =D

Oh...that old Red Robin and Chipotle will all come out in the wash! What is more important is that you had a "babymoon" and spent some time with people you love! :) You are doing really well.

Glad you are home safely!

WHEEE I forgot until you mentioned about fueling that other little new life. :D So exciting, again. hehe. Good luck with your new nutrition goals! :)

Unless you are eating a side salad with oil and vinegar dressing, eating out is downright nasty and dangerous. It sounds like Passover eating will help to balance things for you. I'm off bread, too, but I am eating oatmeal, barley and brown rice instead. Even just that change can cause me to loose a pound or two. Not that you need to loose weight now, but if you are allowed whole grains in place of the bread, you may feel better about what you are eating.

I'm glad you had a good time in Seattle. I love it there too. Too bad about the chain food. I don't doubt the nutrition info. from Red Robin is scary. Saturday after going hiking, the question was eat something light and have dinner later or eat really late lunch and call it lunch and dinner and maybe have a piece of fruit later. Red Robin came up since it is one of the places on the way back into town. I vetoed that, though I'm not sure that the option we came up with was much better.

Thanks for your encouragement on my latest post.

One of the things I've always admired about you through your journey is how quickly you identify getting off track and how quickly you decide to fix things. I don't think you can do too much damage in a long weekend as long as you quickly get back to the usual good and even a little more than that with observing Passover.

My newest amazing adventure...

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

I've spent the past 2 years of my life losing weight. Now I am actually GAINING weight once more, but .... I'm OK with it.

As some of you know, I am pregnant with my first child. We are expecting a little girl in August. I'm so very excited!!! Thank you to everyone who has given me goodies and notes of congrats. Your friendship and support make me smile every day.

About two weeks ago, I felt her kick for the first time. What an amazing feeling!! Since then, I've been feeling her moving around pretty much every day. I live for those moments. So cool! She does get stubborn when hubby puts his hand on my belly. He's felt her kick before, but most of the time she decides not to when he is waiting. :)

I want to be fit and healthy throughout this pregnancy and beyond. I am still tracking my calories here and working out regularly, with some modifications of course. I joined Babyfit for their message boards, but I track my food here because I'm used to the tracker and nearly everything I eat is already saved in it. I do wish the Spark tracker and Babyfit tracker could somehow link up (hint, hint Spark employees).

I want to be careful that I don't gain too much weight and be back to where I started. I want to gain the recommended amount (which is 25-35 pounds) and not more. Of course, there's no telling what my body will decide to do. But I feel that, in teaching me about correct portion sizes, healthy eating and the importance/love of exercise, Spark has prepared me well for this time in my life.

So far, I have gained 7 pounds. I am going to keep my ticker where it is for now, and adjust it after I gain all my pregnancy weight. That way, I will know my starting point when I am ready to be in weight loss mode again, but in the meantime my goal weight will be my reminder to eat well and work out.

So, Sparkfriends, I'll still be around — tracking my food, tracking my fitness, checking in with my teams, blogging. I just won't be losing weight. No Amazing Race auditions for me for a while. But that's all right. I'm embarking on a new amazing journey of my own.

I loved the kicking too!! The first time I had an ultrasound and saw our daughter I started laughing and she tumbled away out of view...which only made me laugh harder - much to the Ultrasound tech's dismay!

I love reading your blog entries...I get this happy little feeling!!

You could be the first contestant to be wearing a Snuggli!

I'm so very excited for you. No pressure or anything, but your due date is my birthday and I think it would be very cool to get THE ANNOUNCEMENT on August 17th.

Congratulations! That is really exciting for you. As much as I'm loving my new body, I look forward to the day I get to feel a little person kicking inside of me. Your little girl is so lucky to have a mommy who cares about being healthy and staying fit so that she can have the best environment possible to grow! I'd love it if you could keep us posted on how you alter your routine in order to be baby friendly (it could be helpful information for those of us who hope to embark on the 9 month journey in the near future).

I don't know, I don't think they've ever had a pregnant contestant on the Amazing Race, so that could be your "in." :)

I'm so very excited and happy for you and your hubby. I can't wait to see pictures of your little one! Do you have any names picked out yet?

Congrats to you and your DH!! emoticon

Icky day!

Thursday, March 26, 2009

I'm not sure what will motivate me to go to the gym today. It's cold, rainy and I have no energy plus a headache. Ugh....

But if I don't go today, I won't get to go until maybe Sunday but probably Tuesday (Monday I will be busy). Hubby and I are heading out of town for the weekend tomorrow and I have to work at my volunteer job in the morning. On Saturday, I am going to watch my DH run a 10K race. Go hubby go! I *might* be able to take a few walks around the lake near my in-law's house to get some exercise over the weekend.

I was totally planning to get to the gym at some point today because it's an awesome day to go. Noon is my body pump class. If not that, there is a 5 p.m. body combat. Then at 7 p.m. is the launch of their newest class - ZUMBA! I was totally looking forward to that. But we need to take the dog to my friend's house tonight where she will be staying for the weekend.
And I need to clean and pack and post another column today too.
I hope everyone's day is going well and that it's sunny where you are.

Thanks everyone! Interview went well! :)

Friday, March 20, 2009

Thanks to everyone who responded to my last blog with ideas for questions to ask the Food Network host I was going to interview. We had a fun chat on Tuesday. Of course, I thought of even more questions afterwards. :)
Here is the link to the story if you're interested.
Hope everyone has a great weekend! Happy Spring!

Yay! Good interview. I love her cookbook and she's absolutely correct about roasting vegetables. She also may not have mentioned, but I'm sure knows that the vegetables don't lose their nutrients to cooking water when they are roasted.

Tonight we'll be roasting our beets from our one time March CSA box which included some of the more durable fall storage vegetables and some spring surprises like spinach grown in a hoop house. My father in law laughed at me last fall when I told him that we'd been roasting beets. I guess my M-i-L never does anything with them but boiling the heck out of them.

Last night, I was in Ellie's cookbook for her oven baked french fries which were just the thing to have with bison burgers. I had first made something like this from a Cooking Light article about 15 years ago, but I've long since lost that recipe. Handy to know I have this recipe right in her cookbook. I should really try to catch her show sometime.

What would you ask a Food Network show host?

Sunday, March 15, 2009

This week I will have the pleasure of interviewing the host of a Food Network show that I love for my healthy living column. I'm very excited!! I have my questions ready, but I'm sure there are better/more interesting questions to ask that I am not thinking of. :)

So...I thought I would ask my Spark friends: What would you ask a Food Network host about healthy living and cooking, or in general?

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. It's cold and rainy here. Blah!

I would ask what their personal favorite go to recipe is for a quick easy comfort food. :) What do they feed themselves??? :D hehehe.

This is very exciting! I am not sure what I would ask her. Maybe something about countering people's idea that healthy food doesn't taste good. I really think people will grow to like good food that is good for them over processed food if they just give it a chance.

I sort of wonder if you're falling into a new career by doing what you love. Sorry your weekend was rainy. Ours was sunny and unseasonably warm and yesterday we went hiking and saw birds (robins and red wing blackbirds as well as turkey vultures ) which haven't been around all winter. It's so nice, I rode my bike to work today. I owe you a spark mail about what we cooked in the new kitchen the first weekend, but I'll say here that my cranberry pancake recipe with buckwheat flour was inspired by the (blueberry pancake, I think) recipe in your interviewee's cookbook, though I have to cut down the recipe for two people since hers definitely would feed four. Also made crab cakes looking back and forth between her recipe and the one in the joy of cooking and served them with steamed asparagus and her smarter tartar minus the pickles. I don't know who but me would have capers and no sour pickles...

I might ask them what kind of menu they'd prepare, from appies to desert, that would satisfy a nutrition-concious guest.

Is there a healthy food that most people don't like, but they've learned to make delicious.

What are their tips for making nutrition taste good?

I don't know what I would ask a food network host. I suppose it would depend on who it was. I think I would probably ask about where they get thier ideas. How about a recipe for some of those very odd veggies I find at the fruit market, but would like to try, but don't buy because I don't know what to do with them.

I would want to know what health food shakes, protein bars and other diet foods are really the healthiest? I would also want to know how to eat healthy on the go. I work at the YMCA and don't have a lot of time to eat and or prepare my meals so I need stuff that is fast yet healthy.
