BOSU ball = AWESOME!

Sunday, November 30, 2008

Last Wednesday I went to cycle class, after which there is a 15-minute abs class/workout. The gym has a new piece of equipment that is being incorporated into the group fitness classes: the BOSU ball. The instructor said she has been training to use and teach with it, and they recently started using it in this abs class. We started out just standing on the ball and balancing. Believe it or not, this really works your core. Next we jumped on it (pretending to be jumping rope). Not easy! I toppled off of it a few times, but it was fun. Then we did a few more stand-up exercises with it before starting the abs workout.

Let me tell you ... the BOSU is the bomb! It was so much better than just lying on the floor. It provides more support for your back, so overall it was much more comfortable than an exercise mat. As for the workout... trust me, you WILL feel it. My abs were sore for 2 days. I am so in love with this gadget that I totally want one for my house even though I can use it at the gym for free anytime I want. I also found out that they will offer an hour-long BOSU class starting in January. I can't wait!!!!!

So...how was everyone's Thanksgiving? I had a nice dinner with my family, and I am proud to say that I also found time for exercise. Have a great rest of the weekend and a splendid week ahead!

    Hi!

Thanks for you words of encouragement on my last post. Thanks too for the Thanksgiving greeting last week.

I'd wondered about the BOSU ball since I'd first seen them. My husband has a stability ball, but since he is 6' tall, his really isn't the right size for me. I think I will have to look into this further.

I see them using those on the Biggest Loser all of the time. Good to know that they actually work! Thanks for sharing!

Thanksgiving was good -- but YAY FOR BOSU! :D I've never been able to get to a class that uses them, but I did bounce on one while doing Making The Cut before. They had one in the ST area, and I did Step Pylos and Side Step Pylos using THAT instead of a stationary step and it was awesome. :D I'd definitely be interested in using one more, they are a cool little tool!

My weight training instructors incorporate the BOSU in some of our exercises occasionally, and it's definitely a great tool. I'm glad that you enjoy it so much and are so excited about the upcoming new classes. Keep up your positive energy, my friend! emoticon

Sounds like fun. I've been using a ball for quite some time, but I may try the Bosu, too.

I've been wanting to try one, as recommended by my physical therapist. But I had so much fun with the stability ball--I thought I should wait for this one...

We also had a great Thanksgiving! I had a piece of pie, but I also did the 5K, so no worries. I really just do not want to go back to work tomorrow after the four day weekend. emoticon

The Bosu ball is very cool. Try standing on it and doing squats, or use it at the Smith Machine for squats and lunges. It is a great tool.

Glad you had a good TG Holiday. I just can't believe tomorrow is December 1st already.

I'm so glad you wrote about this! I have been using my stability ball for a different ab workout, but was intrigued by the Bender ball, or this one (BOSU). I'm thinking the BOSU would be more versatile...unless it has a weight limit...then it just might be EXPLOSIVE!

Hi! Great timing on your blog - I splurged on Black Friday when I found the home-size bosu on close to half price sale plus free shipping, at Amazon, and have been kind of asking myself "what was I thinking" since then. I've never used one ... Sounds like I should start out just standing on it :)

:) I was totally with you and thinking about seeking out a BOSU ball until I read this: "My abs were sore for 2 days."

heehee.

Keep us posted on your BOSU progress.

Back to the workout routine

Monday, November 24, 2008

I didn't work out much last week. I had that post-vacation "hangover" and it was pretty cold last week, so I didn't feel like walking to the gym most days. Excuses, excuses ... blah, blah blah! I did do circuit training one day and also made it to my body pump class on Thursday. Didn't work out all weekend. Lots to do. Well, I had time on Sunday, but after going to the grocery store and doing other errands I didn't feel like it. I'm the type of person who does best with morning workouts. Getting it done before "life" takes over really works for me!!
Anyway...this week I am back and feeling fierce! LOL! Walked to and from the gym, 50 minutes on the Arctrainer and a mile run on the treadmill. Tomorrow is another short run, followed by water aerobics (hopefully), Wednesday will be spinning class (haven't gone to that in MONTHS!) and Thursday I plan to get some sort of workout in before the big T-giving meal. We are having dinner at my parents' house. They are pretty healthy eaters so I don't have to worry too much about everything being high in calories. Friday I also hope to make it to the gym or maybe do something active outdoors if it's not too cold. Saturday I hope to go to Body Combat class. I miss that too; it's been weeks! And Sunday will probably be a day off from the gym, depending on how I feel.
So that, my friends, is my exercise plan for the week. Hope I didn't bore you too much. Not much more to say in this blog. Have a happy Thanksgiving. Gobble gobble! But not too much!

Cool to see the picture of you at Central Perk! I bet if you'd known you'd lose weight in California you would have gone while you were fighting your way down from 116 to 115.

Way to go! I'm also not worrying about what will happen on Thanksgiving. I expect the food to be good, I can have small portions of everything and our dinner is early enough that we should be able to get out for a nice walk afterwards.

Good for you for getting back into it this week!!! At least you did get in some exercise last week -- so really it was a very LIGHT exercise week one week, and then right back in the gameplan. That doesn't sound too bad. And at least you were honest with yourself about the reasons for not going to the gym etc so you can identify them as EXCUSES and not real legit reasons... ;) RIGHT? And recognize that you're a morning exerciser! These are great things to learn about ourselves so that we can set ourselves up for better success in the future!

I've won my 'amazing race'!!!!

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

I am back from my two weeks in California, weighing in this morning at 113.6! I reached my goal weight of 115 shortly before I left for my trip. During my vacation I exercised when I could but I didn't track my food. I had sporadic access to Spark and I wanted to see how well I could do on my own. I am surprised and excited that I actually managed to LOSE a little more weight during this little experiment. Although I will probably continue to track my food to make sure I am not consuming too many calories, I'm ecstatic that I can manage on my own if I need to. It's a sign that I have truly made a lifestyle change.

For all intents and purposes, I am "done." I'm not done with living a healthy lifestyle; that I plan to continue for the rest of my life. But what I AM done with is being overweight and unhappy. I am done with the weight loss part of my journey. It's time for me to put the finishing touches on my new body and most importantly, to maintain my weight loss. I've worked very hard and it's paid off. I've reached my goal! What an amazing feeling!!

When I first joined Spark and set up my page, this is what I wrote under My Goals:
"Meet my goal weight = trip to Israel!! I have always wanted to visit Israel and just so that I have a big goal to work toward, I've decided to make that my big reward.
Overall, I would like to look better, feel better, be a healthier person and, of course, go shopping for cute clothes again!"

I am happy to say that all of the above has come true for me. I look better. I feel better. I feel like a much healthier person. I am back in the size I should be, and when I go shopping, everything fits. Best of all, I did go on my reward trip to Israel!

I truly feel ready for "The Amazing Race," which was my inspiration throughout this journey. It is a dream of mine to be on the show. I finally feel fit and energetic enough to race around the world. Bring it on!

Still in Cali

Sunday, November 09, 2008

Hi Everyone!
WOW, the blog page looks different. So much has changed in the short time I've been away. I am still in California -- just hopped on my friend's computer for a little while. I am actually extending my stay here for another week. My friend who is 8 mos. pregnant needs some help taking care of her little girl this week.
I had a great time in LA earlier this week (in San Diego now). I got to see a taping of the Ellen Degeneres show, as well as "The New Adventures of Old Christine." Fun, fun! That taping (New Adventures...) was on election night, so I totally missed the all the election coverage. They gave usoccasional updates in the studio, and at 8 p.m. they told us that Obama won!
The food here is great. I am trying to be good. I used the workout room at the gym in my hotel almost every day and I walked A LOT. Here at my friend's house I don't have access to a gym so this week might be more challenging on the exercise front but I can still take walks. I will lower my food intake a little to compensate as well. I am hoping to still be at my GW when I return home.
Speaking of....THANK YOU to everyone who has left me notes and comments on my page and blog. I want to thank all of you individually of course but with this trip and not logging into Spark for the past week, it might take me some time to catch up. So THANK YOU soooooo much for your support and well wishes. It means so much to me.
Have a great week everybody! I'll try to pop in when I can, now that I am staying somewhere that I have access to a computer.

Ooh, I'm a BIG fan of both the Ellen Degeneres Show and "The new Adventures of Old Christine". I've been a fan of Ellen ever since she had her sitcom and of Julia Louis-Dreyfus ever since her Seinfeld days. I bet those tapings were fabulous!

Your friend is so fortunate to have such a caring friend as you to help her out while she's at the end of her pregnancy. Good for you exercising when you can and trying your best to make good food choices.

You've been a great Spark friend, and it's a pleasure to reciprocate the continuous support you give me. Enjoy the rest of your time in California, and I wish you a safe trip back home. emoticon

Finally...GOAL!

Friday, October 31, 2008

Ok, so... the scale has been moving between 115-ish and 116-ish for a couple of weeks now. It's been saying 115 consistently in the mornings, so today I decided to stop torturing myself and update my tracker. It's been a long journey, but I wouldn't trade it for anything!!
Now, it's time to focus on maintenance and some fine-tuning. I want smokin' guns and killer abs! emoticon
Tomorrow, I am off to California for a week, and likely not logging into Spark very much. It will be a test of my maintenance abilities. Thank goodness California typically has healthy food. However, if I spot in In-n-Out Burger, I'm going in to try it out once again to hopefully see what the fuss is all about. I went there the last time we were in California (years ago) and didn't "get it." Maybe I will this time.
Thanks to my Sparkfriends for all your support. You've made this process so much fun for me. Love you all! emoticon
