Grumble, Grouch, Achoo!

Monday, August 29, 2011

It started late Saturday afternoon with a scratchy throat. I thought I was having an allergy attack, but when an allergy pill didnít help and it was worse on Sunday morning, I began to suspect that I had the beginnings of a cold. Stopped up nose, scratchy throat, runny nose, sneezes, etc., etc. Iím going to blame it on going to the doctorís office. I wasnít sick, but had blood work done and anytime you go into a place where there are lots of sick people going in and out, you stand the chance of getting a cold. Stay away from doctors!

I'm with Carla on the magazines. I have seen all sorts of sneezy, wheezy folks handling them and I stay away!

Hope you are well soon, soon, soon and back into your life the way you want.

Hope your cold is better soon!

Doctor's offices are germy places, for sure. I don't touch anything I don't have to when there, and on top of that list is magazines. Saw someone sneeze into one once and that did it for me! emoticon

Dry Falls

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Went hiking with a group of friends this morning and I too this picture standing in the middle of the creek bed that would normally be filled with rushing water toward the falls just ahead. We need rain. Hiked about two and a half hours.

Medical Mumbo Jumbo

Monday, August 22, 2011

In April I started eating a low fat vegan diet (ETL). No meat, no dairy, no soy. I have lost 18 1/2 pounds and am feeling fine. Because I am hypothyroid, I have blood work ever six months. I had blood work done in February and again here in August. The changes below make no sense to me. Why would my triglycerides go up so much and what do I need to do?

AHDL Feb 69 Aug 42 Diff -27
Cholesterol Feb 219 Aug 215 Diff -4
LDL Feb. 122.2 Aug 113.4 Diff -8.8
Triglycerides Feb 139 Aug 298 Diff +159
Ratio Feb 3.2 Aug 5.1 Diff +1.9

Is going back to eating fat and sitting on my butt better??????

Okay, I found one explanation, but not sure that is all that reassuring.
"Triglyceride levels commonly go up for three to six months when on a low fat, vegetarian diet. They usually go below the starting level for much improvement after that."

Guess I will wait until my next blood work in February and see what that shows.

The one thing I did understand was that my Vit. D levels were back down too low (27) so I am back on prescription doses. (*and I have been going to pool exercises outdoors twice a week all Summer plus tablet Vit. D supplements).

Just stopping by for a quick hello and to let you know I'm making a note to myself to get back to you when I get my follow-up #s January 2012. Let's see if mine also make a big change. What I get from your blog and the comments leads me to think there is definitely a pattern here--they change for the worse before they settle down. Since you get yours checked again in February, it will be interesting to compare.

Congratulations on your weight loss progress. That is wonderful.

My tri's went up for a while too. Make sure you keep eating just the way you are. More fat is NOT the answer. Nor is sitting on your butt. Make sure that the grains you are eating are only whole grain. And make sure your ratio of veggies to grains is veggie laden.

Good luck!

Triglycerides levels are controlled by carb intake. To decrease triglycerides you have to decrease carb intake. Do I think eating fat is better? Yes. Sitting on your butt? No.

My vitamin D and B12 went low. I take supplements daily. My B12 went low enough my Doctor gave me weekly injections for a while. I never experienced the high triglycerides so not sure what to suggest. What did your Doctor say about it?

Anne, that is good to know. I will hope that the triglycerides go down next time. I had hoped to have a bigger drop in the other numbers and was sorry to see the good cholesterol also go down. I had to go on the prescription Vit. D in 08/09 so that is no surprise except thought getting more Sun would help.

My triglycerides also went up temporarily. My Vit D went down, I suspect because I no longer ate any fortified foods. I use a supplement.

New Goals

Saturday, August 20, 2011

I have many goals. None of them written down on paper. I need to do that. I have just met my first goal which was to get below 130. I managed that yesterday. My next goal will be to get to 127 which will represent 20 pounds lost. The various charts say that I should weigh anywhere from 105 to 121. I think somewhere just under 120 would please me, but weíll see when I get there.

I think I am ready to begin a life plan of some sort of consistent exercise. I began taking an easy water exercise class twice a week this Summer, or the pool one time a week and hiking with a group of women once a week. However we all know that exercising twice a week is not enough. My chiropractor tells me that I need to be stretching and doing something like yoga to prevent further deterioration of my spine. I have to make up my mind to do anything and that nothing happens until I do. I believe that I am ready to make the decision, the commitment, to exercise every day. I need to decide what kind of exercise, when, and where I will do this. I am working on that plan.

Motivation and encouragement comes at the least expected time. I have been battling a pound up and down so close to a goal and milestone for weeks and this morning I saw it on the scale. Today, that number was under 130. I know that that it will go back above that number as my body weight varies throughout the day and week. But I am thankful to have seen that number this morning. And it gave me heart and encouragement.

Tonight I am cooking a pasta dish that contains things not on the ETL plan and that I wonít eatónot even taste as I have my hubby for thatófor a friendís family reunion tomorrow. Just because I donít plan to eat it doesnít mean I want to lose the knack of cooking old favorites for other people. Is that weird?

I am so happy for you. I have a long time before I see that number but I know I will be there, with you, some day.

It is very encouraging to finally see a number you've been striving so hard for. Great job!

No, not weird to cook things for other people. I still cook things for my husband that I do not eat, and I can't see that changing unless he begins eating the way I do.

Have a great weekend!
