Road Trip

Saturday, August 18, 2012

I have been on a loooong road trip, taking my daughter to college far away from home. This wouldn't have been quite so much a problem for me with healthy eating if it hadn't been for the fact that my older son didn't want to drive because the car has a manual transmission. I love the car, and love driving it, so I didn't mind, but......I got sleepy. Very sleepy. And I had to keep driving because we had a schedule to keep.

And I found that (sugar-free) gum didn't work well enough. Talking to my kids didn't work well enough. The only thing that could successfully keep me awake enough to drive was eating. Constant eating. Constant chewing and crunching and swallowing.

Which again didn't HAVE to be such a problem, except that what was available at the time was potato chips. A large bag of potato chips, of which I probably ate half. And the sad thing was that I wasn't hungry at all. I didn't even want it. What I did want was to stay awake and drive.

Eventually I started eating carrots and celery stalks. Lots of them. They worked just as well, without any calories to speak of, but by then the damage was done. Sigh.

So when I get home, I will have at least five pounds to lose just to get back to where I was when the trip started.

On the trip back, there will be no chips in the car, but only carrots and celery!

That sounds very unpleasant and difficult. What we don't do for our kids! I'm glad you made it safely. I wouldn't worry about the chips, but stocking up on the veggies for the trip back is a good idea. Stay safe!

How about a passenger that helps you drive? Calorie free, hassle free, and rest for you.

Too many sweets

Sunday, July 29, 2012

There is a reason I don't normally keep ice cream in the house. Today I ate way, way, way too much. Not to mention M&Ms. Oh, well, I will do better tomorrow. Since the ice cream is gone, I can't help but do better in that area. :-)

Fewer pieces

Saturday, July 28, 2012

I am proud of myself - I got pizza for dinner tonight while the kids and I are watching the Olympics - and I only had two pieces. Granted, they were large pieces, and probably way too many calories, but in the past I would have eaten at least four, so I feel like I am doing great.

Well, I got back to mowing the back yard today. Because it hasn't rained much, the parts I had relatively recently mowed didn't need it today, but the parts I hadn't mowed recently were pretty bad. I think I got a pretty good workout, for me, anyway. Over 12,000 steps on my pedometer!

I am hoping to get more mowing done tomorrow. Sigh. Why did I have to buy a house with such a big back yard?

New Scale

Friday, July 20, 2012

So I bought a new scale for cheap from an online site. The reason I bought a new one was because I got tired of the old one consistently weighing everyone about ten pounds lighter than his/her actual weight. Of course, knowing that, you could get a pretty good idea of the real weight, but I decided I wanted a more accurate scale.

Ha! So the scale came, nice and lightweight, easy to use, and the first time I used it, it was spot on. Hooray, right? Then we moved the scale upstairs to the bathroom, and the next time I tried it, it was showing me at not ten pounds below the real number, but twenty pounds below the real number. Grrrrrrrr... Moved the scale back downstairs and it showed about 15 pounds too low. Moved it back upstairs and again it was 15 pounds too low.

Now my kids are laughing at me for trying to get a deal because I got what I paid for, which is not much...

It sounds frustrating! I hope it has a roller adjustment so you can fix it. It really helps to have a dependable scale. I am not brave enough to step on one in public so I HAVE to count on my scale...and the one at the doctor's office.

You could be accidentally moving the roller tab when you move it. Too, different areas and surfaces will cause it to read different. If you can, put it in a spot that is dead on and leave it there. If not, put the roller thingy to adjust for the difference.

That's weird. I bought my scale at Walmart or Kmart. I step on it 2 or 3 times and it's usually close to the same thing each time give or take a half-pound. My local Publix has a big scale I step on once in a while that I trust. Good luck getting the right scale!
