low carb

Thursday, March 18, 2010

So once again I am trying to adjust my way of eating to suit my needs. When I went to see the nurse practitioner the other day regarding high blood pressure and weight she suggested low carb which was much to my surprise. She stated she felt I had metabolic syndrome (which really wasn't a big surprise) and that the best dietary treatment for it was low carb like Atkins or South Beach. I am hoping that this will help me in the long run. With the blood pressure and pre diabetes and everything in general. That plus the elliptical which has become my new best friend will hopefully get me going in the direction I need to go for health and well being! Oh and the Done Girls team is awesome! Love what a bunch of positive people are there!!!!

Done playing.

So here I am...42 years old (almost 43) but in no rush to get there. Faced head on with the consequences of a lifetime of bad choices and knowing what I have to do about it. Was having headaches and not feeling so well and went to the doctor's the other blood pressure was sky high! (170/100) . Was put on blood pressure meds but know that the only way to really improve this is to improve my weight and my lifestyle. I have been playing around too long working out hard one week, letting the "diet" slip. Dieting the next week and letting the exercise go. Not really serious but more serious than I have been in a long time. So now I have a wake up call. Going to TOPS this morning and hopefully that will be the boost I need.

I certainly hope your TOPS meeting went well. Has your TOPS chapter had a round table or a care and share meeting? My chapter holds a care and share meeting the last meeting of each month. Members get to talk openly about any subject or topic. Sometimes the conversations get very interesting. Good luck.

So Proud

Saturday, February 20, 2010

Yes, I said it. I am so proud of myself. I am working a double today, after having worked third shift last night...instead of hitting the snooze for an extra few minutes or setting the alarm clock later I got up early enough to put in my 20 minutes on the elliptical! That machine has sat dormant in my basement for a couple years now and this week I am so glad I decided to dust the beast off and face it head on. I am tired of being the one who doesn't do it because its "too hard" the battle I will face if I don't get this weight off will be far harder, diabetes, heart disease, stroke to name a few. I decided that the game plan is to increase my time by five minutes a week until I get it up to 60 minutes, then once I am there we will work on intensity. I am looking forward to a long, happy, healthy life that I can enjoy with my future husband and my beautiful kids (and eventually grandkids)

Being raised Catholic there is one thing I can always remember seeing and can still see to this day in my parent's house. The serenity prayer, on plaques, wall hangings etc. I never gave a thought to any of them really until recently. Now when I am feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do it is the first thing I think of. I have a plaque my Dad and Mom made (yes made) for me with those words on it in my dining room right above my reading chair. This journey toward health is tough at times. It helps me to think of those words and realize that only I can change what I need to change, but I need to realize that some things are out of my control. I am the only one that can decide to get off my butt and exercise, I can't control every event that happens in my life but I can control how I react to them. I control what I put in my mouth. I am very grateful for the gifts of courage to change my life serenity to accept the things I can't change and the wisdom to know the difference (sometimes that wisdom is a little slow coming but its there!)

I'm a Baptist Christian, myself, but my mom also had the "serenity prayer" in our house. It's one of the reasons that I like to huddle "make it happen". This journey takes discipline! God bless you on yours, my friend.... emoticon emoticon emoticon

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Well, got on the elliptical today for the first time in forever, put in twenty minutes, stopped to catch my breath once but it felt so good! My goal is to increase by five minutes every two days until I reach an hour! It kicks my butt, leaves me shakey but is so good for me!! Yay!!!
