My first 5K

I ran my very first 5K on Saturday. I never thought I would run in my life much less participate in a race of any kind. I am smiling really big in this picture because I am SO proud of myself. I am standing with a friend that I run in the mornings with. She says next year I can do a 10K. We'll have to see about that.

What I didn't expect...

I didn't expect to be so upset by all the people passing me. It motivated me to keep going. I didn't realize I was so competitive! I did not walk even though it was over 80 degrees and I desperately hated my life several times during the race! I love running, but not when it's hot and humid. Blech!

I didn't expect fellow runners to be so encouraging. Those that finished first ran back towards us in the final stretch and hollered out kind things like, "Good job! You can do it!"

I didn't expect the community to be so inclusive. There were over 1200 people that ran and afterwards they all hung around to talk, slap backs and celebrate the accomplishment. It was an incredible vibe.

And lastly, I didn't expect to feel so full, so relieved that it was over and so tired. (that was probably the heat)

I'm glad I did it. It was worth it. The self confidence I gained is priceless. When I'm 80 years old I'll tell my grandkids, "Once upon a time this old gal ran a 5K and it was glorious."

Discipline sounds like a four letter word. When I tell my children I'm going to discipline them, they all groan. And yet I am simply trying to correct their behavior so they grow up to be fully functional members of society. Still, most people equate discipline with something painful. I started my journey with a desire to learn discipline because I saw my disorderly life and was disappointed. One of the highest compliments I have ever received is when a high ranking member of the company I work for looked at me, complimented me on my weight loss and said, "I admire your discipline." The reason discipline is so highly regarded is because human beings know how difficult it is to say no to the things we so desperately want and yes to sacrifice. So when we see someone achieve it, we marvel. We wish we could master it.

And yet discipline is a good thing. The slow steady drip of working ones way toward a goal is not only admirable, it is personally rewarding. I once thought that being thin wasn't worth the sacrifice of giving up my favorite baked goods. My favorite cookie is called a "Chocolate Crackle Cookie." I spent hours making the brownie like dough, forming it into little balls and rolling it in powdered sugar. I always made a double batch and refrigerated them so I could enjoy them for weeks at a time. There is nothing you can buy in the store like it. I would pile a plate high with this delectable dessert and eat them slowly until I could eat them no more. It was one of the signature pleasures of my life. I couldn't reconcile giving up that pleasure just to be thinner.

But morbid obesity is a curse. The lie those cookies told me, the lie that said, "You can't live without me" has been dissolved by this great truth: Food will never truly make me happy. It will never heal my wounds or hold me in the night. No matter how great the taste, the pleasure is fleeting. The first step in my journey was to acknowledge the power food held over me and then determine a way to fight back.

Let me be clear, I was enslaved to food. I hated the power it held over me. That is where we all must start.

We are not powerless. We hold in our mind the strength and fortitude to recognize our flaws and correct them. This process is called discipline. When I began the journey to better health I assumed I would fail because I had failed before. But I kept going because I hated the thought of giving up. The pain of my obesity was so intense that I would rather have died than stop trying. In truth, I had to come to the end of myself to discover just how strong I really was.

I recently wrote an article for my local newspaper. It is a free publication that is mailed to residents of my little town and my article was towards the end. I was pleased as punch. You see, I have a strong desire to share my story with people who share my struggles. I wrote about how I couldn't afford to go to the gym and started walking around our little town because I felt like it was the only thing I could do. I wrote about how hard it was in the beginning. The blood, sweat and tears I shed simply trying to walk around 2 blocks could fill buckets. I remember sweating bullets while pushing the stroller with my toddler in it up a gradual incline while my 8 year old son walked effortlessly next to me. I remember the sad look he gave me as I said, "This is ridiculous!" And it was.

The reaction to this article has been amazing. While I have received a lot of positive response, nothing moved me more than a woman I met at the Farmer's Market on Saturday. A thinnish woman stopped me and told me she read my article and cried. You see, I used to talk to her when I shopped at a local retail store. She said I was one of the nicest people she ever met and was so happy for my success. Then she introduced me to her morbidly obese friend. "Can you help her?"

I talked to the friend for some time. I saw her brokenness and pain. I saw a life lived less than full. I saw a hunger for change and even a little hope. I told her, "You can do it. If I can, anyone can." I saw the light in her eyes and prayed she would take that first step. Then I realized that all of my pain and suffering and success could be boiled down to that one moment, the moment I was able to encourage someone to fight for their life.

Yesterday I broke away from my daily routines, put on a tank top and went for a bike ride. I bought a new bike a month or so ago and have been putting it to good use. It was warm, around 75 or so, and sunny. There are many hills on the route I took but none so steep that I had to stop and walk. As I breathed in and out and pedaled and smiled, I felt a strong sense of euphoria. I know enough about my body to recognize adrenaline but this was different. I didn't have to alter my route to avoid hills the way I used to. I could stand and pedal up steep hills. I was able to push through any semblance of weariness and just ride. This simple bike ride was the penultimate reward for all my hard work. I honestly felt like I was flying and in that moment I realized I was truly free. I am a slave no longer.

I will always struggle to make healthy choices in regards to the food I put in my mouth. I am weak in my response to the cries of my taste buds. But I can say with all honesty that I will never be obese again. Good health is surely its own reward.

I remember something my pastor said to me years ago when my world had crumbled. He said, "Margaret, you are stronger than you know."

Now I know he was right.

    Thanks for sharing such great advice. I remember when I first started Boot Camp and how I thought I couldn't do it but boy could I..and it felt good. I just wish I could affrod to continue to do it.

Muscle Memory

I have been pretty sick for the past week. My kids passed this croupy cough phlegm sickness through the house and bleh. I'm on my last day of antibiotics. I have missed running so last night I decided to give it a go. Boy was it tough. My lungs are still congested but I found my pace and breathed through it and hacked out all the yuckiness and today I feel much better. But it got me to thinking. There are a lot of times I'm running and it's uncomfortable or I'm tired and want to quit, but don't. I'll allow myself to walk a little but then I pick up again. I think to myself, this must be muscle memory. I get into the groove of moving and keep going. I don't fully understand how. I just know I can. I don't push myself to the point of pain, but there is a different feeling to jogging and being "out of breath" but knowing I'm not really out of breath. I call it muscle memory.

I ran through a group of about 50 people doing Couch to 5K Training and that breathed new wind into my sails. And even though I was bushwhacked at the end of my 4.5 mile run, I felt better than when I started.

This healthy living thing does get easier as time goes by. I'm making better choices and still find eating less carbs and sugars kicks my cravings. I didn't eat any candy for Easter but indulged in a whole wheat sweet bread recipe for fun. Today is a beautiful day. And I feel beautiful in it.

I'm feeling really great about my healthy living rhythm lately. I'm exercising regularly, eating right and have effectively stopped the yo yo binge/behave cycle. I'm keeping better track of what I eat and eating the right things. I have added fresh spinach and cashews to my new list of things to snack on. In short, I am one happy camper.

Easter was great. Church was awesome and time spent discussing Jesus with my children was beautiful. I knew my beloved Mom-in-law was barbecuing and preparing lots of bad icky foods so I took a huge salad and dressing with me and brought my own protein(salmon) which I grilled when the ribs were done. I just feel better about myself when I'm eating Salmon. Bless her heart, MIL had fresh berries for an appetizer and I brought a peach pie with minimal sugar. Some folks complained it wasn't sweet enough but it was TOO sweet for me. All in all, I didn't overeat. I went home happy. And I feel confident I won't start binging.

So, yay for me! Success is sweet. I even dropped a pound this week. Which is getting harder as I get closer to my goal weight.

I am not invincible

It's amazing the amount of confidence one gains while losing weight and taking back their life. I am a prime example of this. However, I learned recently that I am not invincible. I hopped on my bike a week and a half ago and started my 12 mile circuit with enthusiasm. It was foggy and chilly so I wore tights and a hoodie. Still, I was really excited. I like to bop over cracks in the pavement and stand up while I climb hills. That day I was feeling particularly punchy and decided to go a different way on my route to add miles and time to my workout. You know how it're feeling great and the endorphins are kicking in so why not? I was 30 minutes in and made a right turn in the middle of an intersection with a green light when I hit a slick patch and crashed into the pavement with my face.

In an instant my world was turned upside down. I couldn't get up. I literally could not move. People were screaming from their cars, "Are you okay?" but I couldn't answer. I could only lay there and shake my head. A few people jumped out of their cars and came over to help me. I vaguely remember someone asking if my neck was okay. I didn't know. Then they picked me up and move me and my bike to the side of the road. I began spitting out blood and pieces of teeth. A man held me by the arm. "Should I call an ambulance?" I shook my head and pulled out my phone(that's why I carry it). He called my husband. He told me his name was Paul and he stayed with me and made me sit down. I distinctly remember him holding my arm and watching me until the police arrived. I wish I could properly thank him but he departed shortly after my husband arrived.

I went to the emergency room and got a catscan. I was certain I had a concussion but no, I was okay. My chin had a goose egg on it and my lips were puffy and bruised. My front tooth was half gone and my left wrist was bruised. They sent me home with an ice pack and said no more exercise today. Ha!

I've ridden my bike 3 times since then, each time gaining a little more confidence. I don't want to stop riding because of one accident though it did scare the bejezus out of me. And I continue to running. Running seems safer somehow.

Thank goodness for a good dentist. She fixed my tooth and said "No more biting into apples for you, Girlie." But if that's my only repercussion, I can handle it. But I have learned one thing, I need to temper my confidence with purposeful planning. Certainly accidents will happen, but I don't need to be making swift turns on wet roads. I should know that.

Oh, and this happened 2 days before we took a week long vacation so I got to spend my entire vacation with big purple bruises on my face and everyone staring at my husband. I'm not going to share the pictures. The bruises are nearly gone now and that's just the way I like my look. The only purple on my face should be in the form of eye shadow!

    Just saw this blog while perusing your page. What a spill you took! I rode a bike a few times last summer, but I was very shaky and not confident at all. Part of my problem is I have to ride about 6/10 of a mile on gravel before I hit pavement. The gravel is rough!

I'm so glad to hear you got right back on your bike though! Bet that wasn't easy!!

I had half of my front tooth drilled away due to a cavity years ago and was told the same thing when they rebuilt it with a porcelain filling--don't bite into apples with your front teeth. I cut them up--it works!
