Baby Nina Constance is here!

Thursday, August 05, 2010

Baby Nina was born yesterday, August 4th (one day before her due date), at 5:15am...she is 8 lbs, 21 1/2 inches and gorgeous!! She is so healthy and beautiful, my husband and I are pinching ourselves that we are so lucky to have another perfect little daughter. Here's her birth story...

I had been having irregular contractions starting on Sunday. They lasted on and off all day. Then, Monday...nothing. I was so frustrated as I was ready to get the show on the road, so to speak! LOL! Then Tuesday at 1pm I lost my mucous plug. I laid down for a nap while Maeve slept and awoke at 3pm to my water breaking! I called my husband and's time!!! I called my Mom to come get Maeve and Molly, our dog. All the false labor I had been experiencing the previous 2 days had kicked us into high gear. Everything was clean, bags packed, lists checked twice, garbage out, etc. After we kissed my daughter Maeve good-bye it was like clockwork. Contractions started at 3:40pm.

And they were fast and furious! My husband and I labored at home and within 4 hours I was having 60 second contractions, 3 minutes apart. I was in a lot of pain and couldn't talk through them. We headed to the hospital and were checked in at triage. I had planned to do a totally med-free birth but at 11:30, after 7 hours of laboring through the most pain I had ever felt in my life, I begged for an epidural. My husband was so great as a coach through it all. He could tell that I really needed the relief as I was like a wild animal...eyes rolling back in my head, unable to get on top of the contractions that were coming 1-2 minutes apart. They got me the epi and the relief allowed my body to sleep a bit.

Here's where the one scary part came in. I awoke after a brief doze to the nurse coming in the room with 20 other medical attendants. There was a great commotion. They through an oxygen mask on me and had three people try to turn me on all fours (as I my legs were like dead weight). I was shaking uncontrollably from sheer adrenaline and fear. Derek looked pale as a ghost, as I turned to him and said, "What's going on?!"

Apparently, I dilated so quickly from 7 to 10 centimeters and the baby descended so quickly in the birth canal that her heart rate plummeted. We heard people mentioning c-section and I thought I would pass out from fear that the baby was in danger. And then, just like that, her heart rate came up. Everything was fine and everyone left the room. It was I had just had a bad dream.

The next few hours were just a waiting game of the baby descending from +1 to +3. At 5pm I had the urge to push. My midwife, Derek and our lovely nurse were holding up my legs. They got a mirror set up so that I could watch her come out. I pushed for 15 minutes...and she was here in all her perfect pink, screaming glory! It was overwhelmingly beautiful. I was so happy that she was healthy and that I had delivered vaginally after having had Maeve by caesarian. Recovery has been sooo much nicer compared to recovering from a c-section.

We are so in love with our little Nina Constance. We chose Constance to honor Derek's wonderful mother. Nina...we just loved. It means, "grace" in latin, "strong" in Native American, "beautiful eyes" in Indian and "little girl" in spanish. And Maeve is beyond adorable with her little sister. My Mom and Dad brought her to the hospital right away. She walked in the room and immediately said, "Baby sister! Maeve hold her? Maeve needs her." The pics we took of her with Nina are just so beautiful...the love was instant. We take our newest bundle of joy home tomorrow and Der's parents are coming from Boston to stay with us for the weekend. Here are some pics from our amazing last 48 hours. Thank you to all of my sparkfriends for their amazing support and encouragement. I feel so lucky and happy to be able to share my joy with you all! Much love! emoticon emoticon

What an amazing VBAC story! I'm so glad you got your VBAC! I attempted one last time, but it didn't happen for me. This time, we're scheduling a c-section. Either way, birth is beautiful and the love is always instant! Congratulations...what a beautiful story!

30 years old today and 38 wks, 3days Preggo!!

Sunday, July 25, 2010

So's my birthday and it's been a lovely breezy, humidity-free Chicago day. Derek, Maeve and I hit the Randolph Street Antique of my fave things to do during the summer. Didn't buy a thing but got lots of inspiration for all of my decorating ideas! Derek got me a beautiful engraved locket necklace that fits two tiny pictures...perfect for my two little girls!

I am feeling WAY pregnant and have been researching labor and full moons like mad as there is a full moon at 1:38 am tomorrow morning. There's both supposedly no scientific validity to the theory that the full moon brings on labor and yet tons of evidence that it does! L & D nurses seem to swear by it!! Baby girl's arrival would be an awesome bday present, lol!

Had my 38 wk appt. on Friday and was feeling really off that day. LOTS of cramping and contractions. Didn't help that the heat index was at 105 degrees! I gained a half a pound bringing my total to 28 pounds. I am happy with this and would love to keep it at 28 until baby comes! The midwife was guessing that the baby was roughly 7 lbs, 10 ounces at this point...getting big! I just hope that the head's not too big-lol! Maeve's measured 95th percentile-yikes! Overall everything is great...cervix hasn't dilated anymore but is thinning out. The midwife said that not being more than a cm dilated means nothing. She said "You could go into labor tonight". So now it's just a waiting game...

Me and Maeve today...When my husband asked her who's birthday it was today she said, "The baby's"...!!! Here's hoping she's a little psychic...

37 Weeks & Full Term...Woo-hoo!

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Today is a good day. I am well-rested and elated that my 2 year old is healthy again and I'm full term!! It's the home stretch for Baby Girl #2. Had my midwife appt yesterday and all is well. Tested negative for Group B Strep. Very Good. Gained a whopping 3 pounds in a week...wth?! My scale today was down 2 pounds so I am thinking it could have been water weight...but whatever. At this point I should be happy that my gain is still under 30 pounds. If I can keep it at or under 30 that would be great!
I have been uber tired and have not exercised this week...yet! I am trying to gear myself up to do a little modified Cardio Max while Maeve sleeps. emoticon

36 Week Midwife Appt & Family Stuff...

Friday, July 09, 2010

Wow-36 weeks! I can not believe how close I am to meeting this little girl!! Today was a great checkup...which was much needed after a harrowing week taking care of my very sick 2 year old. Maeve has hand, foot, mouth disease and her poor little mouth is riddled with blisters. She is thankfully no longer feverish, but literally, will not eat anything without crying in pain. emoticon There is nothing worse than seeing your child in pain.

Also, our 12 year old dog, Molly, is scheduled to get her left eye surgically removed on Monday. This sounds so horrific but has been a long time coming. She is blind in that eye and suffers from glaucoma and extreme pressure. We've been medicating it for over a year and it finally ruptured a couple of days ago. I know once the eye is gone, she'll finally have relief from what has been a year of trouble. Derek and I aren't even saddened by the prospect of her missing an eye anymore. It has caused more grief for her and us than anything else. And to miss it is more of a vanity thing anyway. Her bangs will grow over it and she'll rock the look. Sigh....

So...back to 36 weeks! Today we had our "labor discussion" and I was happy to have brought our birth plan. Basically I copied the one I had done with my Bradley class for Maeve. The midwife was so great and positive about me having a vaginal delivery. She, again, confirmed the baby is head down and starting to engage in the pelvis...which explains the sharp shooting pains I've been having! emoticon I had my group b strep test today so she checked my cervix too. I am finger tip dilated, which she said was normal. She is guessing the baby is around 6 1/2 pounds right now. I only gained .8 lb this week-yahoo! Bringing my total so far to 24.4 lbs--very VERY pleased with that. At this point with Maeve I weighed a whopping 26.5 pounds MORE. Gotta feel good about that! I'm so happy overall that my little girl is healthy, active and growing. My next appt is next Wed...37 weeks...full term!!!

34 Weeks Preggo!!

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Today was my 34 week midwife appt. I moved it up from Friday as I am technically 34 wks tomorrow and yesterday was really a rough day. I was cramping, head-achey and taking WAY too many trips to the bathroom (TMI, I know). I was feeling super fatigued and even called my hubby to come home early and help out with Maeve. Just had no energy. Oh, and I should add that I tried to run outside yesterday but ending up getting in a good fast-paced walk instead. Unfortunately I think I overdid it what with the heat in the 90's. rule out anything bad I went in early for my appt. All is well! The midwife checked my cervix to rule out early labor happening as my symptoms sounded suspicious. Cervix is closed. Blood Pressure is perfect and...Baby Girl is confirmed to be head down!! Yay! I got to see her through an ultrasound. This is such great news as Maeve was very much breech and NEVER head down. This baby has been down for weeks.

The midwife explained that this could definitely be causing more pressure and cramping than it did with my first pregnancy. She also said to ease up on the running...especially in the heat. Yeah...I figured I would be hanging up my running shoes, as last week's run nearly did me in as well. Ah well...running until 34 weeks preggo...not too shabby, eh?

As far as weight gain I am gaining at a WAY more rapid pace than before. I gained 2.8 lbs in the past 2 weeks! The midwife assured me that my weight gain is fantastic (23.6 lbs total gain thus far). She said that the baby's putting on a half pound a week at this point and not to worry about it. So...I'm not going to. I'll continue to be mindful of my eating, and continue to exercise through walking, swimming and doing some light ST.

But just to remind myself of the progress I've made between the two pregnancies, I looked up my weight gain with Maeve at this point. At 34 weeks with Maeve I weighed 180!! I currently weigh 158.6. That's a difference of 21.4 lbs! Woo-hoo!!!

Great job with the 34 week check-up (and your exercise and your weight gain)!

That's got to feel good knowing that you are plugging away the way that you should be and that everything is going well.

Won't be long before we see a birth blog on here, I'd imagine! 34 weeks to term is just one long victory lap. You've done all the really important/hard work! Pat yourself on the back and go celebrate with a special dinner or something!
