First time on Roller skates in 12+ years

I learned to roller skate when I was little (younger than 5 or 6) in the basement of my parents' house. Occasionally, my older sister would take me with her to the roller rink where she played on the hockey team. I always loved to skate but as I got older I just didn't make time for it or there wasn't a rink or I didn't have the money or the roller blades I bought at one point didn't work for me or I was just looking for excuses. That older sister of mine inspired me to get to the rink. A few months ago she joined a roller derby team (go sister!). When she offered to buy the kids roller skates for Christmas, I realized that neither of them had ever been on roller skates (the oldest is 12). So, today, we remedied that. Definitely something we will be doing again. I'm not sure that the calories burned is 100% accurate but sp says for 90 minutes it was a little over 1,000 calories!

That's AWESOME! Getting back on skates is one of my goals! I didn't learn until I was 18 or 19, but i LOVED it. I don't know I'll ever be able to do the roller blades (the one time I tried was a dismal failure!), but last summer, I noticed a lot of folks rollerskating/blading at a local park with fitness trails and I thought -I want to do that again!

Some moments to remember

Thursday, January 03, 2013

There are some moments in life that I remember much more clearly than others. Generally though, moments in time blend into the day to day and soon a week, a month, or even a year has slipped by within the blink of an eye.

Today, I want to take a minute to mention a few moments that in the years to come will probably not stand out as anything too significant in the long road but have contributed to a wonderful day.

1. I had the opportunity to share my love of books and reading with a fantastic group of little people (ages 6 months - 4 years). One book that is shared with them every week during story time is the "exercise" book (From Head to Toe by Eric Carle). Not only are they learning to recognize the words (and beginning to learn how to read), we incorporate activity into something that is usually sedentary (as well as get those wiggles out).
2. I was fortunate to enough to be able to offer a job to someone who was very excited to come and work for my organization. The excitement in her voice in that phone call left me with a great feeling.
3. I received a follow up call from my new doctor regarding the blood work that I had done a few weeks ago. This was the first time I've had a physician personally call to discuss the results (usually it's the nurse or a letter in the mail). Fantastic news, everything looks great and is at the perfect levels with one exception... need more Vitamin D (take 2 5,000IU D3). Simple enough. And it's fantastic to know that all those measurements (sugar, cholesterol, etc) are within normal range.

Family on Board

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

Day two of the new year and the family is on board with the exercise, kind of. I unpacked the stability balls and pumped up them. The kids (especially my son) have been rolling all over the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Today, I stopped and picked up 2 more and they are ready to go. One is ready for the home office and the other is added to the living room. The treadmill has been used heavily the past few days. I've been dancing up a sweat with my 12 year old daughter (great fun if you have a Wii, Just Dance). The boy (8) is becoming quite the pro soccer player on Wii fit. Now, if we can keep it up and I don't have to prompt or bribe or nag anyone to get their time in.

A New year, a new day

Tuesday, January 01, 2013

Today starts the new year. A day for new beginnings and new goals. A time when a lot of people reflect on the previous year, examining what went wrong and what progress was made. A time to take the lessons from the previous year and incorporate them into the new. Remember though that every day is a chance to start new or to revisit goals. Every moment is a chance to redirect the course and to be the change you wish to see.

Happy New Year! Happy New Day!
