So Confused...

Monday, March 18, 2013

I feel like I haven't been present for a few weeks even though I've been tracking my food, water intake, and fitness daily! We've had A LOT going on recently! Luna got her first pair glasses and we've been battling a very stubborn diaper rash, I got a very much needed eye exam and am in waiting for my new glasses, we've been visiting family, paying down our credit (go-go tax time!), I've applied and as of this morning have been accepted into a local university and of course still working out at least 5-6 days per week!
However, with all that's been going on my nutrition has fallen to the waist side. I've been staying in my caloric range but I'm afraid that much of my calories have been comprised of fast food items such as frozen coffees, tacos, pizza and popcorn. Additionally, I hopped on the scale this morning after having been bloated for the last week and saw that I've only lost .6 lbs over the last 2.5 weeks!! I'm very frustrated because even though my diet hasn't been the greatest, I've stayed within my caloric limits and have, like I said, been working out at least 5 days a week and during those workouts I burn between 150-354 calories! (I use a HRM) ALL of this has been cardio--Zumba. However, they've been different Zumba workouts as to prevent my body from getting used to it. On the flip side of this, I decided to measure myself to get a better understanding of my body and I discovered that even though I only lost just over half a pound, I lost 2 inches.
Now I don't know how to feel. I'm a numbers person, I like to see the number on the scale dropping, especially since it's been consistently going down for over a month (about 5 lb losses monthly since Dec) and now all of a sudden it has stopped. I redid my info on calorie calculators to see if maybe I should be eating more or less and it's exactly the same. What gives?

It's the type of foods you've been eating. You know the saying, you get what you put in?? If you want healthy, you need to select healthy foods. You're body will feel sluggish if it has the wrong sort of fuel. Try adjusting the quality of food you're eating. Just because you're within range, doesn't mean you'll see a loss. Took me a long time to learn this lesson, but trust me...it's true. Don't be like me and find out the hard way.

I'm surprised you lost at all with all that high in salt and fat food. We all have those weeks though. I am eating mac and cheese and tuna...don't get groceries again until April and I didn't plan very well. It is harder to keep fresh fruit in the house than cheap stuff. Salt might be holding water in your body.
good luck at the next weigh in and keep on trying to adjust.

My fats were definitely in the higher ranges. My max fat intake per day is 60 and it's been upwards of 60+. I just figured that even though that was higher, since my calorie intake was still lower than my max (1705) that it wouldn't matter since a calorie is a calorie and is just a unit of measurement. Like that math problem in school 'what's heavier--a pound of feathers or a pound of rocks?' It just bums me out when I'm consistently losing a pound or more a week for a few months straight then all of a sudden it halts and I lose next to nothing. It's so frustrating! I usually eat at home too but the last week or so I haven't been able to make it out to the grocery store and my boyfriend is one of those who can eat whatever they want and howeverucj they want and will LOSE weight instead of gain and he lives primarily off of BK, Sheetz, McDonalds, etc so it's easy to tell him to pick me up something on his way home

First of all...losing .6 is better than gaining .6, right? As long as the scale is going down, I would say you are doing fine. This weekend was really bad for me and I know the number tomorrow is gonna be in the wrong direction. Why can't it be as easy to get off as it is to put on? One of life's unfairnesses.
Fast food is the devil. Seriously...If I were to cook something that I get at a fast food restaurant it is 3 times the calories there...why? I know it is hard. Esp when you are used to eat ff. I am in that category as well.
You are doing fabulous, and my best advice is to look back at your nutrition, maybe your fats were too high, or your carbs? Look at them carefully and see what is sooo much different than the weeks you lost a lot more.

FINALLY! A Better Frame of Mind!!

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

It wasn't until yesterday that I started to feel good about myself again. What sparked this? When I first signed up with SP in December I had my boyfriend take two "before" pictures of me; one from the front and one from the side, in a red shirt. I had forgotten about these pictures until I dug out the same red shirt from my dresser drawer, put it on and noticed it felt more loose than it has in a LONG time (It's a maternity shirt, after all). I'm sure you can see where this is going. I donned the red shirt, stood in the same place I had in the previous pictures and he snapped two more of me in the same positions. This is where I noticed it; the weight I had lost. I haven't lost much since mid-December, just a total of 8 lbs, and I realize I must be measuring myself incorrectly because comparing the pictures side by side, I seem to have shrunk by a good bit!

This is the motivation I've been yearning for!

FINALLY!! It was looking like I have been counting calories and working out for nothing and this is EXACTLY what I've needed! This awesome little boost has also done something I never thought possible: I think I may be starting to (dun-dun-duuun) ENJOY working out!

I owe my newly shrunken physique to Zumba.

Welcome Back February!

Saturday, February 02, 2013

I am very happy to start this month off by saying that I accomplished all of last month's goals! That's never happened to me before! WOOHOO!! Now for this month....

1. Make an effort to be more tidy: Since Luna was born I have had the habit of letting things go. I get so wrapped up in caring for her that I just kind of let things...pile up. However, I'm thinking that's probably not good plus I don't want to set the example for Luna that it's OK for things to be messy all of the time. Thankfully she has no idea what it means to clean up her own mess yet emoticon

2. Make it through the Samba portion of the Zumba Tone video: Every time I reach this segment of the video I either do the first minute or so of it then stop, or stop altogether. I want to be able to make it through it and not be afraid of it. It's not that I feel as though I can't do it, I KNOW I can, but since it's VERY fast paced and I'm unsure of the steps, it intimidates me. This month I'm going to make it a point to do as much as I can, every time I reach it.

3. Lose at least 5 lbs: Even though I had this goal last month, I'm going to keep it this month too, especially since I now know that it's possible to achieve. And I have to be honest here, last month I worked out 6 days a week for the first 2.5 weeks of January. Then it was 3x a week the next week and once the following. I still lost weight, but not as much as I know I could have if I had kept the momentum going. I think I might have just taken on too much at once and burnt myself out. I'm also testing out something I read recently that said studies have shown that people who do cardio for 10 minutes then take a break for a few minutes and do another 10 minutes of cardio burned more calories than those who did a solid 20 or 30 minutes of cardio. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Well, that's all I've got thus far; pretty easy to accomplish I think emoticon I can't wait until the end of this month so I can see the progress I'm about to make!

Luna

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

I just want to take a moment to step aside from talking about weight loss and health to talk about one of the biggest reasons I keep going: my amazing baby girl, Luna.

What sparked my want to write this blog about her was right before I put her down for her afternoon nap and started thinking back to her eye appointment a few weeks ago which lead to me think about our trip to the Gymboree Play & Learn class. But in order for all of that to make sense, first I need to explain Luna.

Luna is 1 of just 100,000 people in the US with Oculocutaneous Albinism. Or to give you the shorthand version of it, she's Albino.

She was born with red eyes, pale skin and white hair. I have to admit that I was kind of dumb to the idea that she was Albino at first; I thought her red eyes were going to darken to brown later on because both her father and I have dark brown eyes. I mean, babies eyes change all the time, right? However, her doctor confirmed her Albinism almost immediately. As a first time mom it's scary to hear something is different about your baby, especially when it's something you don't understand.
Her first eye appointment was when she was just a mere 6 weeks old and the doctor scared me even more because she gave us worse case scenarios only. We were told that part of her retina--the macula--was underdeveloped, but could never be fixed or corrected. Luna also has Nystagmus (her eyes shake) and back then they would tick back and forth like one of those old fashioned cat clocks. She said that it's too hard to tell whether her vision is good or not because she's so young but have we gotten in touch with Vision Intervention Services yet? No? Well, before we leave she will make sure to give us their number as well as some numbers for people who work with the blind. Yeah. Imagine hearing that. It was awful! Needless to say we (or, mostly I, really) cried the whole way home and off and on for the next few days. Then a few days later her father and I both cried when Luna showed us that she could see. He stuck his tongue out at her and she smiled while trying to copy him. Every. Single. Time he did it.
Since she had vision problems from the beginning, she developed slightly behind most babies at first. It took her a while to roll over for the first time and a while to hold herself up while on her belly but now she's ahead in her development.
At her 4 month eye appointment we saw a new doctor who is much, MUCH better. She said Luna is exactly where she should be for her age in terms of vision. She was very impressed with her which was music to my ears! She told us that if her prescription remains the same by the time she turned 8 months old, she would prescribe her glasses. Fast forward 4 months to now and we have her script but are waiting until next month to fill it (for insurance reasons). As it turns out, if she didn't have a severe astigmatism in both eyes and underdeveloped maculas, her vision would be damn near perfect. Being the research junkie I am, I looked up how to read and understand eye prescriptions and checked out a few vision simulators to get an understanding of how she sees the world. The verdict: things are fuzzy and stretched out, but not so bad that it hinders her.
Now that you know Luna a little better, I'm going to talk about our trip to Gymboree.

This was something I was wanting to do because I have no friends in my area and so Luna has never been around other kids her own age. I figured this would be something fun for us to do and Gymboree offers free "try us out" classes so you can try before you buy. Well, it was the most awkward 45 minutes of my adult life. I never knew how different Luna was from your average baby until she was around them. When all of the other babies, also her same age, were having a blast crawling up and down ramps and through tunnels, Luna was on top of me, holding onto my hands, jumping up and down. The teacher tried her hardest to get us more involved, but Luna wasn't interested. She wouldn't leave my side, and while she wasn't fussy, I could tell she was uncomfortable. She didn't care for any of the songs, dances or activities. At the end of the class the teacher has all of the mommies sit their babies on top of a giant, rainbow colored parachute and blows bubbles at them while singing. Luna couldn't see the bubbles, but was fascinated by the parachute. SO fascinated that she needed to taste it throughout the entire song. The reason why I say this was awkward was because the whole time all of the other moms and the teacher were looking at us with a "what's-wrong-with-her-baby?" type look and I didn't want to blurt out, "she's visually impaired, so she beats to her own drum!" because I didn't want to distract anyone from having fun into discussing something that's...how do I put it? Not sad, but I don't know, something I think they would have felt obligated to talk about. Especially if it turned out I was just imagining it all.
Looking back at it, I'm thinking Luna was overly attached to me because the brightly colored play room was probably a bit overwhelming. I'm thinking about trying again once she gets a little older and has been in her glasses for at least a few months, just to see if she enjoys it more.

Anyway, I never use the phrase, "I feel so blessed" but I do. She is the most amazing little girl and I'm so lucky to be her mom. I know things aren't always going to be easy but I wish I could go back in time and tell myself that they aren't ever going to be as bad as I was thinking. When you research Albinism, you find a lot of scary things mostly relating to vision. I mean there are some kids who even after being prescribed glasses still can't see well enough to be able to read and therefore need to learn braille. And sure, that's not the worst thing in the world, but it makes every day things like playing outside, riding a bike, swimming, much harder or even impossible.
However, Luna will be just fine. Her eyes have gained pigment and are now blue and her vision is pretty good. I mean it has to be with how destructive and curious she is.

She's my little monster and everything I do, I do for her.

Lowest Weight Thus Far!!!

Saturday, January 19, 2013

Stepping on the scale this morning made me so happy that I would have burst into dance if it weren't for these damned shin splints! :D So far this month I've lost more weight than I've been losing every month for the last six months! Since I haven't really changed what I'm doing that much, I can only assume this glorious change was brought on by coming off of the birth control pill I've been taking since July (which was also the start of my weight loss journey).
I'm in between pills right now (starting a new kind on Sunday) and kicked the kind I've been taking to the curb last week. Well, usually I lose about 1/2 a pound per week, in the week since I've come off of the pill I've lost almost 1.5 pounds. I feel great about this because I was really getting bummed out. For months I've been working out 3-5x per week and since the first of January, I've worked out 6 days per week and I've always been on a lower calorie diet and I'm FINALLY almost at my goal of 2 pounds per week although I can happily live with 1.5 per week.
I'm really hoping this momentum continues because this summer we are going to the beach and I am really hoping to be able to feel good about myself inside of a bathing suit when we go. I've NEVER felt comfortable in one. I want to look good and feel confident and not have my thighs rub together! This will also be Luna's first trip to the beach and I'd love to be able to focus on having fun with her and taking pictures than focusing on how uncomfortable I feel. Normally I would've used the word "fat" there, but I'm trying to steer clear of using it since it's such an ugly word.
Anyway, fingers crossed this continues! Once I am able (just waiting on these shin splints to go away) I'm going to increase the amount of Zumba I do. And I CANNOT wait for that! :D

Awesome! Congratulations on your weight loss! emoticon

I know it's hard to not take too much value with what the scale says. But I'm sure with all of the exercise you've been doing, some of that "lack of weight loss" is also being affected by the amount of muscle mass you've been gaining. And with the added effect of having children, I'm sure those muscles have needed time to properly build. Perhaps now, your body is ready to take off and really get the ball rolling! emoticon

And I hope a fast recovery with the shin splints. D: Those are awful. And yay for Zumba. If I didn't have two left feet, I'm sure I'd do it more often. lol
