Im either amused or annoyed -im not quite sure what..

Monday, February 18, 2008

So one of the things I was looking into doing - was getting myself a certification as a personal chef - I love to cook, and Idon't have the temprament for a restaurant - nor do I want to spend years in school.. but I figured it might be fun...

So I went to the website of a local culinary school that is supposed to have a pretty good program...

I got an email back from one of their admissions people.

Dear

Ok so they screwed up my first name so they're clearly not making a good first impression...

Then they go onto to say in this form letter why this school would be the right choice for me... and she says...

If possible I would be a pleasure to meet you and your parents if you are available next week. Let me know and again thank you for your interest.

Umm -

yeah...

I'm a 43 year old woman who has not lived in her parents home in oh.... 25 or more years... Yeah I"m thinking that won't happen :D

I guess the concept of adult education is foreign to them...

No where in the request for information does it ask for age - I find it amusing that they assume that I'm 17 or something... (especially since I did say in the request for info that I had a college degree :D

I can really see you doing it and hope the Chicago area has a top rate program. I know there is a need and think it could be really lucrative

You as a personal chef, great match and idea. That school - sounds very unprofessional. Are you going to keep checking on it or find somewhere else?

Sounds very interesting. Are they into cooking in the person's home, for like 20 minute increments?
Gah, sounds like a sex sleeze, or maybe just someone who is foreign. Now, learning from someone who doesn't share your language can be fun, but I'd want to check on what all they do with edible oils...
Evil grin.

Wow. They really made an assumption. I am not sure how I would react. They really need to work on their customer service. Smiles.

Quandry of the day

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Have you ever seen yourself in someone else and really really really want to do something to help them... but between your overly bossy personality and feeling of inadequacy plus not being naturally friendly - have no idea how to go about helping them.

There's this woman I've seen at the gym the past few times I've been there - Probably a good 150lbs or so overweight, and she's working by herself... Her workout from what I've seen consists of 15 minutes on the treadmill at about 2.0 mph - and then she spends time on the weight machines... the same machines each time - one of them being the sex machine.. ya know that contraption that all females seem to use (expect me because I think it's too pornographic to be done in public) where you sit on this machine spread eagle and squeeze your thighs together... She swigs a bottle of Gatorade while she's working out.

Now, I know I'm not an expert or even remotely close -but I've paid enough attention over the past year or so to know that what she's doing isn't going to be effective long term - since she's swigging the gatorade - I'm not even sure she has her diet in check...

That was me about 10 -15 years ago -when I was going to the gym regularly and doing the same things... and then giving up after a period of time because it was so ineffective.. I got no results... and I figured what was the point... I've learned a few things since...

So my quandry is - how does one become friendly enough to try to help someone who might not want any assistance... It's not my business.. but I am a busybody... often times for entertainment's sake, but every so often my intentions are honorable and good...

It'll be good incentive for me to get my ass back in gear...

ME, let us know if you do talk to her. Just the way you are you have big impact on me. I think you would encourage her but remember how locked in our own selves we are when we are big. The hi thing sounds good to me. Be who you are. The older I get the straighter I get and I really try to avoid being nice if nice isn't natural or if by being nice I'm hurting myself. Old habits die hard so why start a "nice" habit. Straight is much more real.

I bet it means it will work!

I think you should work within your own style. Screw the friendly stuff- just mentions to her 'hey, I see you here a lot.' pause for response- ' You seem to be really working for a goal' pause for possible response- 'I remember being where you are now- do you want a couple of tips, or should I buzz off?' pause for response.
She would have to be able to take it straight, no chaser to listen to you anyway. You could then follow up with the- 'yeah, I did what you are doing, and I didn't see any major changes- this is what works for most people.... and maybe just tell her about Sparks.
You rock, you rock just as you are. Screw being all tactful and sweet- just let her know you see her working it and you respect her desire. I bet that works---if it doesn't, what have you lost?
This is not a woman who is in denial about wanting change. It's not like going up to the stranger at a check out stand- she is IN the gym. I bet she listens.

sounds like a lot of effort... :D

While I am a caring person to some degree - when dealing with people Im more matter of fact - I call them as I see them and Im not great with tact - something people who know me appreciate but those that dont find rude -

as dr suess says - be who you are and say what you feel - for those who mind don't matter and those who matter - dont mind :D

I didn't see her at the gym last night - so we'll try a simple hi... if I see her again...

I think Heathen Girl is right, work on your "friendly" skills. People will not "hear" you, unless they believe that you care. If you can create a relationship with her, and continue to exhibit your workouts and "obvious" weight loss, she may come to "want what you have", and ask questions, or look for pointers. THEN you'll have your opening.

the thing is though -i have absolutely no use for the machines - free weights are much more effective...

Lately on atotal whim, i've been looking at certifications for becoming a personal trainer - not that I think I'd do it as career change but because it's for my own curiosity - i know that I should do certan things an d I know I do them- I just can't explain to anyone outside my own brain as to why to do them.

Maybe consider this a good time to work on your friendly skills. I was that same girl at some point and would have really liked to have hooked up with someone who knows what they are doing at the gym.

Maybe start small, chatting and say hey would you like to do some circuit training with me, and then walk her through a basic workout on the machines?

It can't hurt. Might end up being just the thing both of you needed.

Daily Annoyance

Saturday, February 09, 2008

Something that annoys me today..yeah anyone who knows me it's not tough to find somehting that does irritate me but today's daily annoyance...

washing instructions on workout clothes...

I love my Nike track pants - I have three pairs in different colors and slightly different styles - they fit great and are comfortable... and serve their purpose.. however.. the fact that they can't go in the dryer is a little annoying -

workout clothes should be easy care.... and having to remember to take hangers down to the laundry room for my workout clothes is a little aggravating... :)

    I so love your blogs-

What the heck? Work out clothes that have to be DRY CLEANED??? Who are they kidding.

I guess they are for the women who put on makeup and hairspray before they work out.

ARRGGG.

I don't like plain old cotton because it really holds onto the sweat -it's a 15 minute walk home from the gym - walking home in damp clothes doesn't excite me :)

the real killer -i bought a really cute pair of DKNY active wear pants - not wicking material just kinda comfy looking - Didn't notice the washing instructions - Dry Clean preferred - or hand wash cold, lay flat to dry - THEY ARE SWEATPANTS!!! DRY CLEAN? Are they serious? Nope -these will be washed in the washing machine and hung on a hanger - they weren't expensive so I won't care if they get ruined...

I have Hanes workout capris. Once I lose a couple of pounds, they are big enough that I put them through the dryer deliberately, to shrink them. This would not work for you??

Life's Lesson from Football...

Monday, February 04, 2008

All season long, Eli Manning got crap for being a second rate quarterback... All season long my beloved Giants defense got crap for not playing all that well... Heading into the playoffs, they were told to just Shut Up and Play.. advice they seemed to take to heart... they went out yesterday and played as a team -- did what they needed to do when they needed to do it.. and oh yeah - took out the Patriots.. Any given sunday any team can win... it just takes al ittle belief in themselves no matter what those around tem are saying.

No excuses -- Just shut up and do what you need to do and get the job done.

Oh Yeah and Giants win the super bowl in one ofthe best games played in a very long time

it must be broken :)

Thursday, January 31, 2008

Walking just doesnt get enough respect I tell ya... No it's not sexy... but it can be a little effective.

I get off the treadmill tonite at the gym, after spending about 40 minutes on it...

Pretzel Chick on the next treadmill who's yet to break a sweat looks over at my monitor thingie and says -How'd you do that? Umm Do what? register 380 calories burned - you were only walking - it must be broken.

Umm yeah... it must be broken...

she then turns her back to me and says to the person on the treadmill next to her - well it must be because she weighs so much more than I do..

Yeah that's probably it - or it's broken..

Surely it had nothing to do with the fact that I actually work when I walk - speeds started at 4.5mph and went in intervals to 4.9mph with varied inclines.. pretzel chick was jogging, whilst reading people magazine at top speeds of ohhh 4.0mph -

but clearly I got the calorie burn I did because I'm fat and using broken equipment.

I really really REALLY hate people...

You should have squished her head. Close one eye, hold your forefinger and thumb about 12 inches from your open eye, center her little pin head between your fingers and pinch

It's surprisingly stress relieving.

Wow! I would like to say, I have had similiar experiences. Just the other morning I was on the treadmill when pretzel chick gets on next to me getting ready to start her work-out when I see her glance over at my display monitor and sees I'm jogging at 4.8mph; She proudly starts running at 5mph. Next I speed up to 7mph for 1min. then back to 4.8. She looks over and looks at me haughty and speeds up to 5.5mph. I continue my interval training, recovering 2 minutes at 4.8mph then 1min. at 7mph.; She kept looking over at me everytime I would speed up in disbelief that I was'nt having a hard time with this! She was having to slow down alot and was struggling to catch her breath, finally after 15 minutes she in an exhausted state STOPS her treadmill and disappears.
I had already been on the treadmill for 15min. before she joined in,AND stayed on an additional 15min after she left . Not to mention before I started treadmill training I had put in 45min. at 7mph on the elliptical :) When I left the gym I was proud and confident that even if I am over weight, I am in better shape than alot of pretzel chicks out there who show up at that gym and parade around in there little "outfits" , and I may be overweight right now, but one day I will be skinny and in shape! Something pretzel chick knows nothing about!!!!
I admire your consistancy and weight loss progress. I saw your photo gallery and think you are looking AWESOME!!!! Keep up the good work, and don't let pretzel chick still your joy.

Pretzel Chick sucks and needs to go to charm school. Ignore her.

I applaud you for A. getting on treadmill B. getting near the gym in the first place C. for not kicking her butt then and there!

be happy you burned 380 calories and just smile all the way to the next dress size!
we are here with ya!
