Snow Day!

Monday, February 21, 2011

Last week we had a thaw with temps reaching 50+ degrees. Kids were wearing shorts while waiting for their schools buses and spring was in the air. But this is Minnesota, and it is February.

Winter has returned! emoticon emoticon emoticon

It started yesterday about noon and continued all day. It was windy , cold, and emoticon emoticon emoticon

I shoveled last night and cleared out my driveway and sidewalk. So I was a bit surprised when I stepped out of my door this AM into another 6 inches of snow! YIKES. But 6 inches is only an inconvenience in my part of the world. So I pulled out of my driveway and promptly got stuck in the snow in the street in front of my house.

Oh my. I kind of forgot that since I shoveled last night the snow in my driveway was a poor indicator of the snow on the street. The plow hasn't come by yet.

Fortunately I have been driving in this kind of weather all my life so with a little back an forth maneuvering and putting Drive into 2nd I was able to get back into my garage. I called work on my cell and left a message that I would be late.

After digging out my drive and side walk I went back inside to warm up only to discover that the director at work had left a message on my phone - no work today!

emoticon I haven't had a snow day since I was a kid!

    Enjoy your snow day!
The snow missed our area of the state so here I am sparking during my break. It is very quiet here due to President's Day closings and several staff at our Twin Cities office unable to make it to work (not much email or work orders coming in from there) so I am playing catch-up with cleaning and organizing.

Stay safe!

Bugger! I wish I had a snow day. I came into work early with my SO (soooo didn't want to drive him, go home, drive back - we work at the same place) and the roads in St. Paul were quite clear by 5:40 AM. Which was rocking. We had no trouble and hopefully things will stay not awful. Hooray for plows.

It's pretty dead at work, though, what with the snow and folks not working.
I work at Whole Foods. Folks were stocking up on groceries before the storm hit!

Living in Michigan has provided me with the same kind of week you have experienced. After a week of milder temperatures and melting snow, we had a winter storm pass through last night leaving us with a hefty amount of freshly fallen snow. Looks like plans of SPRING gardening are once again on hold until I finish the WINTER "snow shoveling". But remember, SPRING DOES ARRIVE NEXT MONTH!!!!

Good thing you knew what to do when stuck in the snow......some things you just don't forget after years of snow in our areas. Having a snow day can be productive, just like when we were kids only in a different way. We used to go out and take advantage of the snow........building forts, snowman and sledding. Now we can grab a cup of tea and plan our inside to do list and only go out for our cardio exercise.
We didn't get as much snow as you (yet), but there's enough there, along with the ice from the sleet to start digging out..........more snow on the way today through tomorrow, but I think it will be the snowing on and off type so should be able to keep up with it.............Have a great "snow" day .......... off of work. Stay warm and safe and don't so anything I won't do............ emoticon

Hello from your neighbor in Wisconsin. I 've worked in schools most of my career so I've had lots of snow days. They are fun even though you spend a lot of the time removing snow. Still, they sort of remind you of being a kid. I hope you enjoy your first adult snow day. I hope it's all it can be and more.

500 a day

Saturday, January 08, 2011

Like anyone who has been at it for a while, I have a few healthy habits already in place. So usually when I read an online article titled "Simple ways to cut 500 Calories" I don't get much out of it as I am already doing most of the suggestions. I have attached a link that actually has given me a few new ideas or reminded me of some things that I have not been doing. Some ideas are pretty basic for veteran Sparkers. We have become pretty good at swapping out the foods we eat for their healthier versions and know that drinking water instead of pop will save lots of calories. But this article has a few gems in it. So instead of going on, and on, and on - which I am prone to do - I will give you the link and let you decide if there is anything of merit to be had.

Good-bye 2010

Friday, December 31, 2010

Today I say good-bye to 2010. I am planning a quiet day of reflection. This has not been the best year for me. For starters I had a stroke on August 26. That's a pretty low blow for a year to pull on a person. Seriously 2010 what the heck were you thinking when you did that to me?

I also developed a Morton's Neuroma on my left foot which really affected my exercise momentum. Putting no pressure on the foot seriously limits aerobic options. My favorite exercise of walking is currently sitting on a back burner.

And of course there is paying off those medical bills. My insurance is good, but the deductible is still way too high. And them my washing machine and oven both decided to break down! The stove is too old to fix, but I will wait until the medical bills are paid off before I look for a new one. At least the burners still work. You can do a lot of fine cooking on a burner.

2011 - I welcome you with open arms, and as always I have some resolutions to work on. This year I have whittled my resolutions down into one simple goal. It pretty much covers every area of my life.

2011 is the year that I de-clutter my life.

I am already working on this resolutions starting with my house. Owning a home invites clutter. It is easy to store things when you have a house. And before you know it - clutter happens. This clutter is symbolic for other area's in my life as well. Personal finance, friends and family that don't serve, and of course extra body weight. As I de-clutter my house, I run into things that I have emotional attachments to. I struggle with letting these things go. Why? It could be that I have not used this item for a very long time - but the attachment is still there. What I am discovering about myself is that I also have a similar attachment to letting go of the weight on my body. To a degree I have become attached to my current body image and self. It is time to let that go as well. As I am going through my house and let go of these attachments I remind myself that I am also letting go of the old me that no longer serves. This is becoming a very healing process.

My wish for myself in 2011 is that as I de-clutter my life, and let go of the old, that any emotional attachments I have to my physical body will also be let go. In the process, a new healthier me will be revealed.

It is a simple resolution, to de-clutter one's life. But I think it will bring grand results.

I am looking forward to 2011. It will be a very good year!

You took what could have been a very negative overshadow (a rough past year) and turned it into a very healthy, healing, and empowering goal. I know this will be your year, as you shed your self of the clutter. You can do this, and will look back, at this time next year, and thank yourself for taking that first step. :)

Here's to 2011 - I see clear skies ahead!

    Hi Maggie,

I am sorry that 2010 was such a rough one for you.

I want to let you know that, during this year, your friendship has meant a great deal to me and that you have been both a blessing and and encouragement to me.

My wife struggles with emotional attachment to things to and is trying to declutter also. I don't so much deal with clutter with regard to things but with organizing my time and my brain. This will be a challenge for me in 2011.

My wish is that you have a wonderful 2011, that you are blessed with good help and that you are able to achieve your goals.

Your grateful Sparkfriend,

In a way, the fact that you're worried about bills and stoves is very positive, because it means your stroke didn't have too heavy an impact on your health emoticon
I love the de-cluttering idea and I wish you luck with this venture.
I certainly wish myself to be able to read your blog posts and stay in touch with your throughout the coming year emoticon

    Hi Maggie dear,
This is a new beginning for you !
Try to put what is past behind you love.
I know it is so hard, we have so many regrets sorrows and health issues, but! we cannot undo the past it has gone... and should be forgotten,
except for the lovely memories.
Take each new day as it comes savour it . it will never come again .
We have to move forwards and upwards with a loving heart and forgiveness in our soul.
We also have to learn to accept that we can only do what we can.
Have a wonderful New Year my friend .. Hugs Susie emoticon emoticon

Maggie, you've had a rough year, so you have only one way to go and that's up! Sometimes life gives us great struggles to help us learn what is really important. When I went through cancer, I read a wonderful essay entitled "The Gift of Cancer". At first, my reaction was- gift? How can cancer be a gift? But as I went through the healing process I found out who I really was and what was impportant for me. May 2011 bring you a year of healing and better circumstances. Your strength shines through in all your posts, so I know you will come through anything life throws at you.

I saw a news story on TV tonight about an Danish island called Bonnholm that has just had close to 6 meters of snow in some places. That's 19.6 feet for those of us in the states.

Makes the 33.2 inches of record December snow look like a dusting.

Snowiest December on record

Friday, December 24, 2010

It's official, sometime last night Minnesota set a new record! We are now experiencing the snowiest December since they started recording these things. We had more snow last night. That is actually old news, as it seems as if we have more snow every day. But this latest snowfall puts us over the top. The previous record for December set in 1969 was 33.2 inches. We are now sitting at 33.4 inches and there is still a week to go before the end of the month. And guess what? Yep, that's right, they are predicting that more snow is on the way. We aught to blow that old record away. Seriously if we are going to have to put up with this stuff we might as well have bragging rights.

I've been sitting in front of the fire an awful lot of December. emoticon This is what I look like as a result of all this snowy weather.
