When It Rains It Pours

Friday, June 03, 2011

I've really been trying all day 2 b positive. But once again something else happens.
My therapist stopped by today & told me that I m not 2 do no therapy & 2 avoid walking as much as I can until I go 2 the surgeon on Thurs. He even made a point of telling me not 2 even attempt 2 go shopping even with my aunts walker ( it has 4 wheels & I can sit on it when I get tired) Like how did he know I was gonna attempt 2 go food shopping.

Well now 2 y I feel that when it rains it pours.

As I'm writing this blog; I'm waiting 4 a phone call 2 let me know that my grandmother has passed on.
This woman is amazing & suffered thru so much & never lost her faith - even now. She has buried 2 children (1 being my stepfather) & 4 grandchildren.
She always treated me as if I belonged in the family; better then my own biological did.

Cancer - it seems to take all the special ppl out of my life.
my mother both of her parents & 2 stepfathers.

    You got it friend!
Your grandmother is in my prayers, as well as yourself.
You make sure you listen to your therapist, I don't want to hear that you injured yourself to the point that you won't be able to walk.
God loves you and so do I.
Hugs and Love

Nurse - Visit

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Well the visiting nurse came today. I m 2 refrain from all activities including my walking laps & physical therapy until I hear back from the surgeon. I also m 2 use the walker @ all times; so this nice cane that got delivered will b sitting here in the corner 4 a while. She also reminded me to drink lots of water; I told her I was drinking 4 -16 oz bottles a day - she recommend to try to add 1 or 2 more bottles.
Drinking so much fluid concerns me a little w all the swelling already in my legs & feet ( I figure it's @ least partially due to fluid retention). Not to mention that since surgery I dont know when I have to use the potty until its almost 2 late.

I did speak 2 the surgeons assistant & was told that once they read the films if there is nada wrong then I can continue therapy & fewer laps - the rest of the time I m 2 sit in my chair w my legs elevated.

I've been directed to go c my family physician about the swelling in my legs & feet, so I will b doing that tomorrow morning.

I forgot 2 mention yesterday that when I went to get my mri while I was in the er - they broke my special lumbar brace - luckily 4 me I was able 2 rig it & u cant even tell except when I'm trying 2 put it on.

Keep doing what the doctors and nurses say. I can't add much to what every one else has said. Hang in there until you see your doctor!

Watch out for yourself, you are the only one who knows your body and what is good and bad changes. It sounds as if you are getting tthe message to take it easy.

My urologist said to go into the bathroom on a schedule and try since you can't feel it. He said 4-5 times a day at a minimum and more if you drink more.

Keep following orders and I do hope the xrays will show to be fine.

Do what the visiting nurse says and the swelling in your legs, just elevate it with some pillows. I know it sucks to be limited. I broke my ankle two years ago and I hated it. Take care!

Do follow what the doctors say. THe nurse does need to be listened to.

Watch out for the salt intake and remember the water will flush out your system.

Take care,

Ok I'm hard headed but I get the message now

since Friday my legs & feet have been swollen; possibly nothing 2 do w surgery but none the less I should have even stopped doing my laps when it happened BUT NO NOT ME

Sunday I fell 3 times 1 while getting dressing try to put my pants w/o sitting fell onto cushions near the end of my bed 2.go up the stops my thigh got caught on something & I didnt feel it so I knocked it down & caught myself w a dresser 3. go into the bathroom my right leg gave out tried to catch myself & fell into the tub ( yes literally into the tub)

First time I've been home alone (well just me & my disabled father) since the surgery. I called my daughter just to have someone to talk to we argued cause I wouldn't go to the hosp Went to get up from my chair n felt the worse possible pain in my back.

My bil drove my hubby home from his house in about 1/4 of the time it usually takes & they arrived just as the ambulance did.

They x-rayed my shoulder & back nothing is broken but shoulder is bruised

They did an mri dr in er said that there was a slight change but there was nothing that would cause neurological problems BUT I need 2 c my surgeon ( who I just seen on Thurs) ASAP. Hubby questions the dr about the slight she would give NO answers
I was there from 10 pm until 7 am

Tomorrow my nurse comes & I will b calling my surgeon prayerfully i find out whats causing my legs to b swelling like this I had the problem a cpl yrs ago but not this bad. Wed I will probably visit my family dr.

Follow-up visit = Frustration

Saturday, May 28, 2011

Well I went Thursday 4 my follow up visit with the surgeon. I thought they had to remove stitches but no I m glued together; so I have 2 just wait for it to dissolve. I m very depressed about the fact that I m bac up to 250 lbs.

The dr says that I'm in pain cause I'm doing too much. He says 4 more wks of doing nothing but therapy; so NO stationary bike - yet. Therapy @ this time is still with the therapist coming to my house. I get new x-rays in 4 wks & go bac to surgeon July 7th.

My new cane will be delivered on Tuesday; so prayerfully I will b able to only use the walker for distance.

I'm not allowed to go swimming until the incision is fully healed.

The dr also says that if i go to Ohio (which I will do regardless) in July; I m going against his recommendations.

YES I KNOW ITS ONLY BEEN A LITTLE OVER 2 WKS but it is really hard 4 me not to b able to do stuff. I'm not suppose to even sit on a stool & wash dishes. You would think I would b happy that I dont have 2 do any housework but I just cant sit & watch hubby do all the work.
It's been really hard 4 me since I gave up my volunteer work @ the high school & the
elementary school - I need 2 b busy.

Yesterday I went up to the church to help with the usda food giveaway; I sat outside for ppl to sign the paper but even that was too much on me. So I spent most of today resting & will probably do the same tomorrow' well @ least until my bil pics me up to go to his daughters b-day bbq.

Please do keep my mil in ur prayers - she is recovering & still dealing with blood clots in her lungs.

Please take care of yourself & give your body time to heal. I KNOW this is hard. I'm recovering from surgery as well, & have been so impatient. It is so hard to let someone take care of you, when I'm used to being the one to take care of everyone. If you give your body the rest, & the time to heal properly it won't be as long as if you over do, & need more surgery to fix what you've overdone.
I'm sorry I don't mean to be preachy. Yigobutterly said it all.
God Bless you

Believe me, I know how frustrating it is not to be able to do anything when you usually run everything. You want your fusion to be sucessful and that means doing what the doctor says. All of my fusions were sucessful except that my back fused in a reverse curve requiring daily pain meds. It was lighterweight, Darvocet. But after three months of only being allowed a small daily walk and laying in bed the rest of the time, even eating, my fusions took hold and after a year each time in a molded brace I fused completely.
Currently, due to new problems, I have spent the last 9 months in bed or laying in the recliner with pillows to lay flat. You are right, it is hard to be the person needing caregiving but sometimes that is the cards dealt. My mom now does all the cooking and my dad works on the house without me. It is frustrating but pain prevents all endeavours.
Please don't push it. I knew a woman who had many failed neck fusions because she was back at the gym doing chinups only 3 weeks after surgery. If I were her doctor and knew this, I would refuse to do any further surgeries.
Do not rush getting well, even when you feel better your body is trying to heal.

Best of Luck

I am sorry that you are not where you would like to be at this time but also glad that you had the surgery and will in time be better and more mobile and in less pain. I am looking forward to having you as an honorary member of our team this summer . . . .we can use a cheerleader and being part of the community will be good for you too.
Take care and have a great day!

Healing does take time. One of my Bible verses is Psalm 46.10, "Be still, and know that I am God"... When I try to do things my way I get in trouble.

Take care,

I know it's hard. When I was young, with small children, I came home from a week in the hospital and was suppose to be resting, but there were things that needed to be done and I was the person who was suppose to do them. It seems like you need to find a nice sunny or shady ( whichever you prefer) spot and a good book (a nice cold drink), and and just allow yourself to heal. In my past experience once I gave in and just rested it was amazing how much faster I healed. I'll bet your husband likes feeling needed, let him carry the work load for a while.

2 Wks After Surgery

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Well yesterday marked 2 wks since I got my surgery done. I m still in alot of pain but I m managing to get around.

My therapist is very happy with my progress.

I m doing a few things that I'm not approved to do but I just cant not do anything. I have started helping with cooking& doingik dishes (all while sitting).

I c the surgeon tomorrow 2 get my stitches out. I will also @ that time find out when I can start my out patient therapy. The nurse gave me a few things to discuss with him.

The numbness in my right leg has not improved(from waist 2 knee) & when I do my walking laps it goes down into my ankle. I still have trouble getting into my bed & using the steps.

Well that's my update until I c the surgeon.

May everyone have peace within ur life.

Even with the pain it sounds like things are improving. I hope the Dr. has an explanation for the numbness, like it's just a temporary thing. Don't do too much that you shouldn't, you want to get this over with ( that was the Mom in me talking).
