Day 110

Well today is day 110 on Sparks.
I lost 23 lbs gained back 10 lbs of it real quick.
I stopped being able to walk outside due to the cold, most days I can barely get out of bed. Then I was depressed so ate all the wrong foods.
Now I m slowly getting back on track I've been sic for over a wk but I m taken the time to learn about myself & my habits. Prayerfully this time next week I will be reporting that I m back to walking. I started doing my strengthening exercises yesterday


They Made Me Cry

I had to share this. It is probably the sweetest thing that has ever been done for me.
I volunteer @ a Christian school one day a week, I m a violence prevention specialist. I usually teach on Tuesday, yesterday was my b-day but I spent the day in bed. I have a stomach virus & the flu.
My hubby & I r sitting here watching the soaps wrapped up in blankets taken turns coughing. There is a knock on the door my hubby as answers it to tell me that there are some kids on the front deck for me. So I go to see what is going on. Standing there on my front deck is my church's German volunteer, the schools principal & mission year person, the 4 students that I'm working with this semester & sitting in the jeep my cousins(they went to the school to pick up their son - I live about almost 2 blocks from the school)
For cooking class today they baked me a birthday cake & @ dismissal time they all came to the house & on my front deck they sang Happy Birthday to me. I cried - this is the 2nd time in my life that I had a cake, 1st time since I was 12 yrs old. I also received a small rose bush.
It's amazing how such a simple thing can touch one so deeply.

Dealing With Setbacks

At first I was doing very well. If I had a set back I would walk even more. LAtely though I have pretty much just given up. I haven't been doing my morning miles. I'm not eating right. I have pretty much went back to all my bad habits. This down hill spiral started when I put on some weight - the worse part is that the weight was do to fluid retention but I just got so discouraged I just haven't cared to do much of anything.

Now I have put back about half of the weight that I have lost.

Tomorrow though is Ash Wednesday & I always give up something for Lent. So I m giving up bad foods.
Today is my 41st b-day & it ends my pity party. I m going to get back on track & I m going to do what I was doing to get back in shape.

    Good for you and your fresh start! I waited until I was 59 to really start my journey to better health. Do it while you are young and when you are my age (60) you will feel fantastic! Also, the younger you are the easier it is to lose it.

I've been where you are when you are on the bottom of your list of priorities. Just remember that the healthier and happier you are the better support person you will be for the others in your life. Your pictures show such wonderful progress. Don't always look at what is ahead of you. Look back sometimes to where you came from, too, and realize how far you have come.

    Marsha...I know how discouraging it can be when we see the scale heading up and how it plays tricks on our minds...I have been playing that game since I started SparkPeople...and it has really been disheartening..
Just get refocused, start your program again, and just take it one day at time...and as far as that scale, pay no attention to it when it shows a slight are doing great and you continue to do great, I believe that with all my heart!
So let's just take a deep breath, take one small step into the direction we want to go, and then not look back at the what has happened, it is over and now we get to start anew!

    I think we ALL get discouraged by setbacks sometimes. Some days, it's easier to put yesterday's mistakes behind you and other days it seems to just trigger a landslide effect.

When I'm trying to get back on track or refocus - I've learned to pick just one thing to work on. I have a tendency to try to do everything all at once and I can be a bit of a perfectionist - so if one thing gets out of whack I sometimes just let the whole thing go to pot. All or nothing mentality.

Now, if I've had a bad day, I try to some positive reinforcement at the end of the day. I say: "Today, I did __________________ well." It might have been that I drank my water, it might have been that I worked out even though I didn't feel like it, etc etc. It helps to keep me from just beating myself up for all the "bad" mistakes I made during the day so it doesn't trigger the landslide effect.

Also, I throw out clothes as soon as they become too baggy. Then I don't have those fall-back clothes. I have to keep making forward progress or I don't have things to wear. It really keeps me honest. Plus, retail therapy is my favorite motivation. I had been feeling kind of blah this last week, but I went shopping and was able to get into a "normal" pair of pants - not women's. So that will help re-energize me for the week.

I know this is probably a longer answer than you were looking for - but there you go.

I REALLY REALLY hope you don't get too discouraged and beat up on yourself. Our team is going to make it to the finish line together - we're not done until we all make it and we're going to support each other every step of the way. emoticon emoticon

Yea, I'm going thru it again.
I've always been an emotional person & I've suffered from depression for about 35 yrs (I'm going on 41 now). But since I've started workin on getting healthy it's just soooo much worst. i just don't know if it's worth it at this point. I love to cook, I love the flavor of food & I love to eat OH BOY DO I. I have been eating healthier, I have been exercising. I'm just not sure if it's really worth it.
Yea I'm just really feeling sorry for myself.
The dr told me to lose weight & my pains would ease up, well that didnt happend they r actually worst. Yes I went to the dr to c y & the test r the same as b4 so they dont understand y I'm in more pain. I cant even get out of bed most morning w/o crawling at first.
Well I guess thats enough feeling sorry for myself for the night.

    I don't know if this will help or not, but during my last yoga class my teacher was explaining to another person (who has spinal problems and stuff) that when she wakes up that she should do so S-L-O-W-L-Y. Wiggle toes and fingers, move head back and forth (like saying no), shrug shoulders, breath - notice where breath goes, slowly increase amount of breath. Move ankles back and forth, move legs from hip to toe back and forth, in unison. Push the small of your back into the bed, clench you core muscles. Do that a couple of times. Turn on you side to prepare getting out to bed. Think about what you are doing on this day. Let you arms begin the lifting procedure to get into a sitting position as you move your legs over the side of the bed. Just sit there for a bit. Breath in and out, extending your spine up, straighten your shoulders. Tuck your chin down to your chest to get a little stretch in the neck area.
Find the special spot deep inside of you that is so happy to be you, and get your day rolling. Lenore

    I'm really sorry you're not feeling better - it would be really hard to stay motivated if you're feeling worse instead of better. But the changes are happening inside - you are getting healthier. Re: your increased pain - I think you should push your doctors to look further. Perhaps the pain is being caused by something else, not your original diagnosis. They should keep trying to help you and get you feeling better. You shouldn't have to suffer.

When you're feeling down - know that we're all pulling for you and cheering you on - you CAN do it!

Sometimes there are people in our lives who are just there
Not particularly close to but cordial & friendly
Then something happens & you’re made to realize
That this person is a very special person in your life
This person is gonna drag u out of the darkness
the darkness that is over taken everything in your life

Every time u seem to need that kick in the ass
They are there where u least expect them
It starts out as an e-mail or comment on line
Then you hear their words as you struggle
Reminding you that you can do this, you have to
They r there again to offer encouragement

Sometimes even when we know the answer
It is easier to except it from another
They say if u truly want to see your reflection
Let another be that reflection for you
