Being grateful

Tuesday, January 07, 2014

I grateful for the tools that I have been given to make this journey. I am facing some health challenges this coming year that would be better met if I am in better condition and weigh less. I am thankful that sparks gives me the tools and suport to meet these challenges.

old too big clothes

Saturday, January 04, 2014

When my clothes are too big and can no longer be taken in ... I will donate them to the local domestic violence shelter. We often get larger women but we seldom get donations of larger clothes. If other large woman are like me they hate to shop so keeps clothes until they are completely worn out and too ragged to donate. I look forward to cleaning out my closet.

Definitely a great place to donate your clothes and I'm sure they are appreciated. I donate mine as soon as they are too big because I don't want to grow back into them. Good luck on making 2014 your best year ever!
Blessings and hugs,

Getting back to serious Sparks

Sunday, May 01, 2011 the past 3 weeks have not be fabulous for me. I have not been keeping up with my exercise and not staying close to my eating plan. Several days in the past two weeks I haven't even logged my food or my exercise. So far, I've been lucky and haven't undone the hard work I have done over the past 5 and a half months. I managed to hit the 50 pound loss mark but now I seem to be stuck. Not sure why, just haven't been able to commit to my daily routine like I was. So I am calling it a vacation and getting back to work.

Today I start again. A fresh start. I set new goals. I want to lose 10 pound by my son's graduation. I will get in 45 minutes of cardio 5 days a week and do at least 10 minutes of strength training 5 days a week. Now ... since my favorite walking buddy (my husband) has left town for a week I'm going to go call my backup walking buddy and see if she want to take a quick walk before the next round of rain gets here.

Disconcerting News

Friday, February 18, 2011

So ... I went for my swim today! On my way out I heard another swimmer asking how many laps in a mile. She gave him a different answer then the lifeguard I asked several weeks ago. On my way out, I thought that I would just get the right answer (assuming the answer I had was correct). To my dismay my answer was wrong! That 2 weeks I though I was closing in on 2 miles. Guess what, I was closing on on 1 mile! That's right, the lifeguard I asked told me 35 laps (one length of the pool) was a lap, when in fact 70 laps (one length) is a mile. I'm consistently swimming 60 laps so my goal is back to 1 mile in an hour. Drats!!! Just to make sure, I verified the length of the pool (25 yards) and came home, got on the internet (through a Sparks Search of course) and did the math my self. Yup, gonna have to step up my game!

On a positive note, I signed up for the Sparks virtual 5K today. It will be my first in more than 30 years. Start training using the sparks training guide tomorrow. More about that later. emoticon

Love my new fins!

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

A couple of weeks ago, I rewarded myself for reaching a small goal. I set a goal to be able to swim a mile in 30 minutes. During all of my swimming time, I noticed a lot of people using short fins during their lap swims. I asked one of the ladies I see frequently about her use of fins and she told me that they make you use a different set of muscles. I decided that when I could swim a mile consistently I would buy a set of fins for myself. They finally arrived yesterday and I was so disappointed that I didn't get to try them out. I got to use them tonight. What a difference they make. I got my first mile in about 20 minutes. I was able to continue laps for a full hour with out breaks. First I noticed that I was using different muscles in my legs. Then I realized that because fins are rubber and float, I was having to use more of my core muscles to keep my kick below the water surface. When I first got in the water I though that it would just increase my speed with less effort. (I used to scuba dive and used fins about 3.5 feet long, lots of power with very little effort) Boy was I wrong. The the kicks were more efficient, I was still getting a great workout. Probably better as I worked more of my core. I think that I will really fee this tomorrow! So ... if you having trouble finding me, better check the local pool cause I am planning on stepping up my game and increasing my mileage goals.
