Thanks, Lynn. The Walking 4 Fun website has made it more interesting to rack up steps. The WRJ&G team has helped me aspire to, and achieve, 120 fitness minutes (plus) a day, and the steps are a big part of that! It has ensured that I lose consistently each week.

Fill Your Small Plate

Fill Your (Small) Plate

According to Brian Wansink, Ph.D., a behavioral scientist and ‘mindless eating’ expert at the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab, people who fill their plate with everything they plan to eat (including dessert) eat about 14 percent less than those who don’t fill it as much but return for second helpings. So to eat less, load up your plate -- but only once. To reduce your intake even more, use a smaller plate. Wansink found that subjects who served themselves using smaller dishes ate up to 60 percent less.

I try to never have seconds. We serve from the stove, so it takes a little more thought to go bak for another helping.

When I was shopping for new dishes, I had hoped to find smaller dinner plates. I finally gave up.. I try to remember to fill the large dinner plate only 1/2 to 3/4 full. It helps too, to serve from the stove. It takes a bit more consciousness to have a second helping if you have to get up and walk to the stove.

I even use a kids' spoon and spork to eat!

Good advice. Here is a free link to the full plate diet which advocates eating more fiber, drinking more water and eating only until you are full. Pretty sensible stuff. Check it out :-)

Works for me. I still have my son's baby bowls and plates that I like to use. They bring back fun memories, and help me control my portions, so I win all the way around.

We usually eat a fairly good size salad before dinner and that helps both of reduce our servings. Also, I have finally learned how to cook less so we divide up what is there and there are NO seconds to get! Works for us.

What Time To Go To Bed

Saturday, November 01, 2014

I wish I would have seen this last week when we were doing the Sleep Challenge. This is a little calculator that tells you what time is the best time you need to go to sleep. It looks at the number of sleep cycles and the idea is to prevent waking up during the middle of a sleep cycle.

sleepyti.me/

I try to get up at 5:00 a.m. According to Sleepyti.me:

I should try to fall asleep at one of the following times: 8:00 PM or 9:30 PM or 11:00 PM or 12:30 AM

Please keep in mind that you should be falling asleep at these times. The average adult human takes fourteen minutes to fall asleep, so plan accordingly!

sleepyti.me works by counting backwards in sleep cycles. Sleep cycles typically last 90 minutes.

Waking up in the middle of a sleep cycle leaves you feeling tired and groggy, but waking up in between cycles lets you wake up feeling refreshed and alert.

Makes sense. I'm going to try to adjust my bed time accordingly and see what happens.

Good luck! Funny thing is, when I had to get up to go to work it was hard to do. Now that I don't work I wake up easily!! 6 am every morning on the dot most days. Some days I can make it until 6:30 if I'm lucky! But back when I had to get up...it was another story!

Let us know how that works. Me? DH and I hit the pillows about 1:30 - 2 am, then we wake up without an alarm around 8 - 8:30 am.

Interesting. I never thought of it in terms of sleep cycles before
