YES~ I WILL.....YES~ I CAN

Wednesday, July 01, 2009

Joined in April. Got serious for May. Did well. Lost 12 lbs.

THEN........came June.
Three trips out of town to visit family....a wedding shower, a reunion and then a wedding.....
June went down the tube as far as nutrition and exercise goes.

AND.....(head bobbing from side to side sarcastically).....my stress level went off the scale, I found out I could eat sweets from morning to night, learned that I absorb loved ones challenges and stresses even more than I thought and found out that I can eliminate the word 'no' from my vocabulary. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Results: I put on 7 lbs. emoticon

OK....I'm home.
I'm here....
and reading all the wonderful interactions here on SP have motivated me again.

So....awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay I go! emoticon

Again.

I need you guys.....

Hi Lyn - Glad you are back. Knew you had a heavy schedule and with that it is not unusual to gain a few lbs. Happens to all of us. Only I used to quit! I would get so frustrated. But I guess I have finally learned a few things, even SP doesn't get me down anymore. Ha!

I know you will get back and lose those 7 lbs. Just be patient and stick with it. Whether it is l lb. over or 15 - it takes the same measure of determination.

Welcome back! Hugs - I guess my emoticon didn't work!

May was my bad month. June was better. And I hope July will be even better. Everyone falls off the wagon every now & again. The important ting is that every time it happens, you just get back up and continue the journey. For some it's a shorter journey than for others. Mine has been 5 years so far. It took me about 4 years to lose just 10 lbs. But since joining Spark People, I've been about to lose 15 lbs so far. I love reading the articles and peoples success stories and their failures. The failures help put my own failure in perspective. Though I lose a battle every so often, I'm winning the war.

So just dust yourself off and get back on course.

Good luck!! We can do it!!

Self imposed challenge ends tomorrow!

Saturday, May 30, 2009

I started this challenge May 1st on another forum. Not to many there so I am posting it here to share with you my ups and downs, my good moments and my not so good moments. It has been hard, as I have never walked this much consistently in my life. And now, I love it. But have also learned to rest when necessary, as I sometimes push it even when my knees say 'no'.

My month of May went as follows:

emoticon

Beginning of Day ~
MAY 1 ~ 35 minute brisk walk.
MAY 2 ~ 35 minute walk. ~30 min. walk
MAY 3 ~ Ditto.
May 4 ~ 15 min. ~ 15 min.
May 5 ~ 15 min. (so far)....th-th-th-that's all folks
May 6 ~ 35 min. brisk walk
May 7 ~ 30 min.***
May 8 ~ 30 min. plus 15 this morning.
May 9 ~ got 2 hours of reasonable hard gardening
so far today. Going to try to get my walk in
later this evening.
May 10 ~ Didn't get that walk in. Overdid it in the
garden yesterday. But I got a good one at the track with my grandson after dinner tonight.
May 11 ~ 60 minute walk
May 12 ~ nada
May 13 ~ 45 min. brisk walk
May 14 ~ (my DD2's 50th birthday.) Going to celebrate by going for a walk. Now I'm aiming to see her celebrate her 65th. Now is 9:30 pm, PDT and I did my walk for today. Another 35 grueling minutes!!!
May 15 ~ took day off, sore hips.
May 16 ~ 35 min. brisk walk
May 17 ~ sidelined with vertigo.
May 18 ~ 75 min. walk, plus 1 hour gardening.
May 19 ~ all this walking has caused me to have some pain in my hip joints. So am taking a few days off.

~ ~ ~ Have lost 10 lbs since I signed up a month ago!!!!

May 20 ~Will be visiting DD3 over on the Gulf Islands for the weekend. Hope to get some walking done over there.
May 21 ~ travelled to DD3's. long dy...no walk.
May 22 ~ 7:30 AM - 20 min brisk walk.
May 23 ~ 40 min. walk
May 24 ~ AM 20 min. walk
May 25 ~ 20 min. walk.....worked in the garden for about 2 hours.
May 26 ~ 35 min. brisk walk.
May 27 ~ 35 min. walk this morning, 60 min. hike this evening.
May 28 ~ no walk today, just gardening.
May 29 ~ 5 hours of gardening and I think I walked at least a mile in my yard today. Boy am I pooped!
THEN.....my DD2 and GS2 and 3 took me to the track with them and I did another 1.25 miles after dinner.

May 30 ~ Believe me I AM tired today. No walk.
Tomorrow is the last day of May.... I WILL GET A GOOD WALK IN FOR SURE!!!

MAY ~ 31 ~ 2009 I DID IT!!!..My DD2 and I went for a brisk 35 min. walk about 8:00 am and just finished an hour in the garden. This has been a hard month, and I loved it!!! I feel so damn good about myself today, even tho' I have had a few down days this past week. To top it off.......I LOST ANOTHER 2 POUNDS which I wasn't expecting to. Boy, life is great at this moment. I am so glad I can share this wonderful feeling with others who understand.

***this was a challenge to myself I finally attempted this morning. There is a rather steep hill that goes down my street toward town. I usually don't walk this route. But this morning I did. I went down and back uphill in 30 min. and I wasn't as tired as I thought I would be. So, this proves to me that regular walking is building up my stamina.

Blindsided by Vertigo!

Sunday, May 17, 2009

Just when all is going well, bingo.....my darned vertigo struck about 4 am this morning. I turn over in my sleep and that's usually when it strikes.
So my day went to **** in a handbasket! Light bothers my eyes, stagger when I walk, have to hold on to something or lean against the wall when I get up .....which is as little as possible. emoticon
I slept until 11 AM which I NEVER do. Finally got up and had a little breakfast which made me nauseous.
My beloved grandson(27) came over and made dinner for DH and myself, brought over a couple T-Bone steaks for himself and DH. I had a chicken breast. But you know what......now that I have been on SP for a month, and have been faithful to my nutrition and fitness.....this was a very difficult day. I don't like not being able to get up and do whatever I want, otherwise being in control........ AND.......I really missed my walk today.
I did go over my daily goals by 200 calories, but everything else was OK. So I guess it's not really 'that' bad, but it sure feels like it.
My vertigo has subsided thankfully. Most times it only lasts a day, but have had it so bad that I have to crawl on all fours with my shoulder firm against the wall in order to get to the bathroom. Otherwise I will fall for sure and most often get violently sick.
Thankfully it hasn't been that bad for a number of years. Maybe my body is getting used to it.
But my mind sure isn't.

Hope your day was better than mine.....it can only go up from here.

    Lyn,

Only another vertigo sufferer understands your misery. My vertigo also strikes in the middle of the night but often lasts almost a week. My doctor has prescribed transdermal scopolamine patches that I put behind my ear. They help me a lot. Although they don't make the problem go away completely, I get a lot of relief from them. I always take the patches with me when I travel in case vertigo strikes when I am away from home.

Hope things are back to normal now.

Lyn, I'm so sorry to hear that you are dealing with such a sudden 'knock-out' blow. But I think Iknow you well enough to know you are not down for the count.
You will be back with us before we can count the usual 10 count.
The month's time you have spent building your body and healthful diet will serve you well in this recovery time.
God bless you and give you a speedy recovery.
We're praying for you and anxious to hear your cheery posts when you get back.

Your 'teamy'

Lyn, so sorry to hear that you are bothered by vertigo! I have it too, and it is not fun. A couple of years ago it was so bad, I could not get out of bed at all, not even to bathroom, and DD had to come and help me use bedpan! Now that was humiliating. I now sleep on two pillows, and have gum beside my bed. I was 8.5 hours not able to raise my head until DD had me chew some gum. Now I will not lie down without having gum by the bed. Sure hope you find something that works for you. It is sure a killer to the ego and self esteem. God bless. Please let me know how you are doing.

Hugs,
Jean

Women over 65.....read this!!!

Friday, May 08, 2009

I just saw a report on TV regarding women' s health over 65 years of age. Leading cause of death is heart attack. Excess weight especially around the middle, sedentary life style, poor eating habits all contribute.
Talk to you all later, I'm going for a walk. Really. emoticon

Lyn

PS. Just got back from a 30 min. brisk walk. emoticon

Yes, we are all guilty of poor choices, Lyn. Thank the Lord for Sparkpeople and the great friends here, we have the incentive to do better. No need to keep repeating the same mistakes we made earlier in life. Thanks for sharing the knowledge and keeping us alert.

Happy Mother's Day!

I can identify with your post.

We went grocery shopping yesterday. I saw four ladies walk in the store ahead of us who were all at least 50 to 100 pounds over weight. As we were checking out and wheeling our groceries to the car, we saw three more ladies who desperately need to loose weight. I used to be one of those people.

Our population is putting on excess weight at an alarming rate. We are not a healthy planet.
