My journey to better health has been rewarding as well as challenging. Letting go of unhealthy habits and learning new healthy ones has not been easy. But, like riding a bike, once you learn, the roads you travel can be so much more interesting and lots of fun. The rewards are great: less aches and pains, climbing a set of stairs without stopping to catch your breath, wearing blouses that look great tucked in at the waist, not having to wear a jacket just to “cover up”, becoming very creative in the kitchen, learning a new language, and so much more.
Today I met up with a professor I hadn’t seen since June, prior reaching my first goal weight. With exhilaration in his voice, he told me that I look like a model! I humbly replied, “I hope to be a model for everyone wanting to improve their health.”

Today was a day of reflection for me. Like most, I was thinking about the lives lost on 9/11 ten years ago and the broken families affected by the attack. Many have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice their lives for my freedom, even the freedom to belong to SparkPeople.com and to write this blog entry. Although I did not lose any loved ones from my family that dreadful day, I still mourn and pray for the families who did. Every day I try my best to be a better person than I was the day before. I have so much to be thankful.
Since reaching my “adjusted” weight goal of 140 pounds back in June, 2011 I realized I should have kept to my original goal of 137 and not give up on myself. So, I am continuing to strive toward that original goal. Because of my success with SparkPeople.com thus far, I have a closet full of “gently used” professional suits (size 16) that no longer fit me properly. As I reflect on my journey to better health, I would like to help those women in the New York counties of Orange, Sullivan, Dutchess or Ulster who are trying to get into the workforce and cannot afford the appropriate attire for their job interviews; or, if they are in the workforce and are struggling with other bills, cannot afford a couple of good suits. I have been blessed with the support of my family, friends and everyone at SparkPeople.com. It is such a great feeling to look in the mirror and see my “new” reflection as I continue to succeed on my journey to better health. I would like to give back by helping others.

Cut to the chase, I'm listing my goals for this month:
- to continue tracking nutrition and exercise
- to quilt at least one hour a week
- to run a 5K at least one time per week
- to complete the Orange County Country Roads Fall Foliage 2011 Bike Tour onSept. 18th (weather permitting)
- to learn more Russian phrases and the alphabet
