Orange County Country Roads Fall Foliage Bicycle Tour

Sunday, September 18, 2011

The weather couldn't have been more beautiful for bike riding today. I ventured out to Warwick, NY to participate in the annual Orange County Country Roads Fall Foliage Bike Tour. The views were breathtaking as were the hills to climb! The tour took us around and through many farms as well as a special sanctuary for abused and neglected animals. I posted a picture of a resident camel and baby kangaroo. Some of the proceeds from the riders registration fees went to the upkeep of this sanctuary. It was truly a remarkable day!

Today was a day of reflection for me. Like most, I was thinking about the lives lost on 9/11 ten years ago and the broken families affected by the attack. Many have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice their lives for my freedom, even the freedom to belong to and to write this blog entry. Although I did not lose any loved ones from my family that dreadful day, I still mourn and pray for the families who did. Every day I try my best to be a better person than I was the day before. I have so much to be thankful.

Since reaching my “adjusted” weight goal of 140 pounds back in June, 2011 I realized I should have kept to my original goal of 137 and not give up on myself. So, I am continuing to strive toward that original goal. Because of my success with thus far, I have a closet full of “gently used” professional suits (size 16) that no longer fit me properly. As I reflect on my journey to better health, I would like to help those women in the New York counties of Orange, Sullivan, Dutchess or Ulster who are trying to get into the workforce and cannot afford the appropriate attire for their job interviews; or, if they are in the workforce and are struggling with other bills, cannot afford a couple of good suits. I want to help. Please contact me through SparkMail if you are interested in receiving any of my suits or if you know of someone who could use them. All will be kept confidential.

I have been blessed with the support of my family, friends and everyone at It is such a great feeling to look in the mirror and see my “new” reflection as I continue to succeed on my journey to better health. I would like to give back by helping others.

Another amazing day....Tour de Goshen 2011

Sunday, August 21, 2011

Today was an amazing day. Although not as amazing as June 22, 2011 when I stepped on the scale and saw that had I reached my weight goal, but still amazing in accomplishing another big goal, riding 25 miles in the Tour de Goshen! For many years I have yearned to do this event. I used to stand on the side lines and watch the bikers go by. Because of being overweight and out of shape, I could never join the other bikers until today. Since joining SP, I work hard at improving my health so I can enjoy doing the things I used to just wish doing. Thank you, God, for guiding me and giving me strength in making right choices. Thanks to my family and everyone at SparkPeople for your continued encouragement and support! Next tour is September 18th! Nothing is stopping me now!!!

That is such and awesome accomplishment to go from looking at the bikers to being one of them and living your dream.
You are right nothing can stand in your way now of accomplishing even greater things for your life emoticon

    Congrats....looks like you had fun.

I'd love to ride in an event. We have big races around here but you have to be one of the big boys to ride in them (without looking like a fool anyway). To go wih the biking clubs you have to average 16 -17 MPH and I would be left in the dust.

Hey congrats on riding today! & also on getting to your goal weight :)!

I know what it's like to not do things b/c of being overweight or out of shape, I am inspired to see that you worked through that and did something you had wanted to for a while.

p.s. cycling is so fun!

August 2011 Goals

Monday, August 01, 2011

Happy August! A new month and it is time to list new goals. What is very obvious to me as I progress in my journey to better health, is that I have more energy to more things, ride longer bike trails, run more often, do more household chores and have more time for "fun" projects. The old procrastinator that used to live inside of me for years is gone and I'm on top of my game to achieve more for a fuller, more exciting life. In turn, it is my hope that my being will inspire others to succeed in their lives. So here is a list of long and short range goals of which I will challenge myself:
- to continue to plan better
- to budget my time better
- to continue to enjoy daily exercise
- to continue to track nutrition
- to complete the Tour de Goshen this month
- to learn how to kayak
- to learn the Russian language
- to complete an ongoing quilt project
- to read The Spark at least 30 minutes a week
- to continue to spread the Spark!

I found an old pair of shorts (see below) that I used to wear prior January 2010. To help inspire others, I posted this picture on my FB page. Within seconds, there were dozens of posts from friends with the same question: "How did you do it?" I can't wait to tell them!
