Hiking in NH

Saturday, August 04, 2012

Today's hike in New Hampshire was exciting and challenging. However, because took us over nine hours to complete the looped trail, we are arriving home very late.So my summary highlighting my day will have to wait. My next blog will have a pictorial summary.

I love to hike in the mountains as well. And, often I go to Virginia and hike in the Blue Ridge, at least two or three weeks every year. Nothing compares to the beauty you see when you are at a summit and you know that your feet and legs carried you to that beautiful view!

Service to Needy Children…..Project Linus

Saturday, July 28, 2012

We all recognize the importance of service to one another. Project Linus, a non-profit organization ( www.projectlinus.org/ ), tugs at my heart and motivates me to make quilts for children who are experiencing tragedies or serious illnesses. The mission of the organization is to help children in need by providing a sense of security at a devastating time in their lives.

What a great feeling it is to be a “blanketeer” with hundreds of others who share a common purpose to make blankets with love for children at a time they need it most.

Your quilt is so sweet. I'm sure some young child is going to get a lot of comfort from it.

A few years ago, I crocheted some children's afghans for a local organization similar to Project Linus.
They also sewed colorful drawstring bags for children in the foster care system. Otherwise, those kids were given black plastic trash bags to carry their personal items in from home to home. How sad is that?

"I get by with a little help from my friends......"

Saturday, July 21, 2012

In trying to stay focused and avoid depression, I decided to push myself out to the park to continue with my SparkPeople's 5K Your Way Rookie Running Program. The rain and intense heat from this past week almost made me feel like throwing in the towel. But today, after reading many of my SparkFriends activity feeds, I felt encouraged to go out and complete day 3 of week 5. It felt really good to accomplish that small task. Now I am ready to enter into week 6. It’s great having friends look out for you and help you stay on track. Thanks, SparkFriends, for helping me through this week!

Choices........

Saturday, July 14, 2012

Every day we wake up we are faced with many decisions to make. For some choices, we need to think a bit before deciding; for others we find ourselves making the decision right away without giving it much thought. Automatic responses are usually part of habitual behavior. Some behavior is learned. On our journey to better health, we are constantly learning how to decide which foods contain better nutritional value over others. We learn to choose to be active rather than watching someone else’s activity on TV. We learn to trust in God and our friends to help us through the difficult times of decision making. Some choices are easier to make than others. When we learn what is best for us and choose accordingly, we reap the benefits. Sometimes we make the wrong choice but we manage to learn from our mistakes. Through this whole process we build strength physically, mentally and spiritually. When this happens we find ourselves heading closer toward our goals for success. There's no turning back. There's no "do over". We just choose to move forward. So, plan ahead. Play often. Create in the kitchen with Spark recipes and explore the outdoors. Life’s an adventure. Make the decision to embrace it!

Reflections........

Saturday, July 07, 2012

As I embark on year three with SparkPeople, I recently took time to reflect on my journey to better health while kayaking on the Wallkill River.

The beauty reflected by the rock and shoreline reminded me of the strength I have gained spiritually, physically and mentally.

The reflection of the clouds on the river made me realize the sky is the limit with anything I would like to accomplish.

The reflection of me paddling depicts the consistency needed to move forward to accomplish any goal.

Reflections……….it is time for my next adventure. When is yours?

You were right, I did enjoy this very much! We live life in very much the same way, my friend. I hope I never get too old to not see that every day has the potential for more reflections and more adventures.

Life is good!
