A Ride Through the Forest

Saturday, May 19, 2012

Just wanted to share with you today's ride through the Stewart Forest Preserve. Over the past couple of weeks, the forest vegetation has become very thick and very, very green. Although the beauty is awesome with different wild flowers taking turns showing off their blossoms, it makes my ride a bit more challenging because of the shadows created on the trails by the foliage of the trees. I am a little more cautious than usual but still enjoy the adventure.

Happy trails!

We rode on the Katy Trail this AM. The best part was the strawberry popcicle that I had midway throught the ride.

Come, follow me....

Thursday, May 10, 2012

….as we ride through the Stewart Forest Preserve. Because the area experienced quite a bit of rainfall yesterday, our ride will take us through muddy areas and streams. Ride steady and try to pedal continuously right through these areas without stopping. While going downhill, elevate yourself above your saddle and keep your feet parallel on your pedals to avoid hitting rocks and uneven areas. While going uphill, I find it helpful to avoid standing while pedaling. Instead sit firmly in your saddle and use your abs to power through. Enjoy the ride and Nature’s finest wildflowers and butterflies!

(Very large tree ---lots of chopping wood for campfire)

HAPPY TRAILS!!!

The Maiden Voyage

Monday, May 07, 2012

The cool 50+ degrees and cloudy skies did not stop us from embarking on our new adventure. A local park has a lovely lake that is perfect for beginners like us. It took me a while to finally figure out what my outdoor enthusiast son was trying to teach me over the phone last evening about how to paddle. But after I left the shoreline and “paddled” for about 15 minutes in circles, the light bulb finally came on and I truly enjoyed about an hour and a half of paddling. My husband was doing well, too, but at a much slower pace. Unlike me who wanted to get a cardio work-out completed as well as enjoy the scenery, he paddled at his own pace preventing the overuse of his previously injured rotator cuff. Wish I could have taken pictures of our views, but I feared the phone/camera getting wet. This picture was taken after I came ashore. Can you tell which yak is mine? Did you play today?

Not really, but I'm about to make a huge mess making salads....

Once again, I'm totally jealous. I used to kayak all the time when I was at school and had ready access to the school's kayaks. We even did the dart river once. But although I live in an area which is ideal for kayaking adventures we just can't afford one at tme moment. I've promised myself I'll get one if I reach my goal weight by December.

Here I go again....

Saturday, May 05, 2012

Another new adventure awaits me, this time on the water. I’m finally reaching another goal on my list. That is, to learn to kayak. After much research, my husband and I decided on 2 kayaks that meet our beginner needs and pocketbook. With life vest, water shoes, oar and kayak, I’m ready!

From old rail trails to mountain trails, and now ponds, rivers and streams, there’s nothing stopping this ol’ gal. See you on the water!

I love your go for it attitude...very motivational to me. I've tried kayaking on a lake in Michigan and I like it, but I need more practice and determination to really make it a work-out for me. I'm basically taking a few strokes and then gliding and definitely not working hard enough to get my pulse up.

Welcome to my life! Many people as they travel out of their younger years start to act old - sitting in front of the tv and getting more sedate by the day. Then there are those of us like you and me who see this time of our lives as an adventure with more freedom than we ever had back when we were "growing up". Lifes to short to sit on the couch! Let's live everyday with things that live wire our senses!

Enjoy the yaks! Enjoy life!
Life is good!

Never Quit Pledge

Friday, April 27, 2012

I am making the following pledge that was posted on a SparkFriend's blog. I'm committed and wanted to share it with you to encourage you to never quit.

Today, I promise I will not quit.
I pledge that no matter, how many ups and
downs I pass through,
I will continue on my journey.
I pledge to make a NEW START today,
and forgive myself for my past,
and to stop being so critical of myself.
I pledge to take control of myself,
To Stop making excuses,
And stop blaming other people or situations.
I pledge to treat myself as I would my Best Friend,
Because that is who I am.
I pledge to stay in the race
and to be a WINNER!
