Gardening in the rain

Saturday, May 29, 2010

Late this afternoon, after I got a snazzy new haircut (My hair grows really fast!), we went to a couple stores to get yard stuff. I picked out some seed - cosmos, hollyhock, sunflowers, pea, and lettuce, as we will pick up veggie plants after we put in our raised bed garden. My hubby came up with a great idea. There were 4 x 4 raised bed kits, we got one. His suggestion, put the square around the birdhouse pole in the back by the pond (see previous blogs for pictures). I think that is a great idea.
We brought my teen son to lift the bags of mulch, garden soil, etc. with the promise of an itunes card. While we were at the garden center, the sky got really dark, and I was beginning to doubt if I could get the plants in.
My son put the mulch bags in various locations so I can access it without lifting, then it began to drizzle. That's ok, I can plant the geraniums, the wax begonias, and vinca vine with a little drizzle. I changed into my grubby clothes, and put on my heart rate monitor and went out to plant the 18 little plants in my flower bed in the front. While I was at it, I opened one bag of mulch and delivered its contents around the beds in the front of the house. Just as I was finishing, It began to pour. I cleaned up after myself, and put the implements away. My hubby ordered thin crust pineapple and mushroom pizza, at the pleading of my son. I was originally going to grill shrimp. Since I was dirty, and soaked, and very hungry after all my working out today, I felt I could appreciate a little pizza tonight. I even will give myself a frozen yogurt chaser for the night, and I don't feel bad about it. I have worked hard today, and have been burning calories like crazy today.
The rest of the garden will have to wait for another day. Besides, it is raining, and getting dark, and I deserve a rest.

Yep you definitely deserved a pizza after all that garden work. I can't wait to see new pics when you get it all done.

I agree you deserved a pizza after that work out in the garden. I get my son to move the mulch bags, too. They are so heavy I can hardly lift them. I hope you get some sunny days soon so you can finish your garden.

Your garden sounds wonderful! Won't the birds throw seeds that will sprout into the garden? I'm thinking of the song "Gardens in the Rain" by Ravel, a beautiful piano solo

I am Michelangelo: a Renaissance

Friday, May 28, 2010

I am a block of marble
I am granite
I am wax
I am moldable
I am changeable
I am unique
I am my own chisel
I am my own tool to sculpt myself
by every move
by every morsel
by every moment
committed to change
I am change in motion
I am not who I was
when I began
I am who I am becoming

And if you've ever seen any Michelangelo sculptures, you know that the man can carve muscle! We all can take that block of granite that is our unfinished selves and make ourselves into something (or someone) truly spectacular! (And by the way, I think you're spectacular already!) emoticon

Relief Day!

Although I had trouble sleeping, I did not wake up with a headache.

emoticon emoticonThe storm blew out the heat,so it was much more bearable today.

My hubby felt much better emoticon emoticon

My hubby and a friend fixed one of the pipes leading to the outside hose.

Work was quiet, busy enough, but not overwhelming. emoticon

My back and knee do not hurt too much.

and (drum roll please!)

I have released a pound! emoticon

Looking for the sleep fairy ~

Thursday, May 27, 2010

Last night too hot, couldn't sleep for hours, though I tried, and woke with a wicked migraine.

Wednesday night/Thursday wee hours - oops, looks like more of the same. I have dozed, but not enough to call it sleep. The sciatic nerve has acted up. It is hot, we put in the AC, but I just cannot get comfortable.

Finally went in the recliner, almost fell asleep, now here I am again, trying to just fall asleep at the keyboard.

There was quite a thunderstorm and my cat was freaking out. I have never seen him act that way with a storm. He cowered on the floor between the bedroom and the living room. He was afraid of the AC, and he was afraid of the thunder and the lightning flashes. I have seen dogs that way, but never a cat.

Where is that sleep fairy when you need her? Oh, there she is: fast asleep.

It does make it hard to sleep when it's hot. And my cats are afraid of everything - LOL.

I hope you find that sleep fairy again and when you are done send her my way.

Sorry to hear about the sleep fairy avoiding you last night...she can be quite fickle at times, hope you get a good nights sleep tonight! We have a cat that gets antsy when the thunder is especially angry....a milder storm, not so much....Our dog is very fearful, and shakes & shivers, but Oliver, with all his swagger, totally loses his cool in intense storms...

i completely understand you. My sciatic nerve goes crazy every night, the AC kicks on wake up, hot flashes, cat meowing in my face because he is hungry at 2am, and finally the constant going to the bathroom. All this water is good for me, but is my bladder the size of a pea? You tell that fairy emoticon to get her little butt over here when your done with her! LOL! emoticon

Maybe it's the full moon or something. My GoWearFit armband tells me that I slept for exactly 51 minutes last night, and I usually have no trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. emoticon emoticon

Hurdling over hump day!

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Besides the heat, the day has been tough from the start.
emoticon emoticon

Last night, I had a difficult time getting to sleep, the heat was dragging me down. By the time I slept, I knew I would have problems as it would be hard to get enough. When I woke up, I had a full blown migraine. I placed an ice cold compress on my eyes and forehead and lie down for a little longer.

Later, when I finally got up, I knew I could not do my regular workouts. Too hot, and the head hurt too much. I did get my stretching strength exercises in, but that was it. I did get 2.1 miles of walking in - not as much as I would have liked.

I got to work later than intended, but felt mostly relieved from the pounding head. Towards the end of the work day, I got a call from my husband suffering with stomach pain that warranted a visit to the ER. So I left work to take him directly there. He has had previous surgeries and conditions that necessitated a thorough exam to rule out repeat problems.

Luckily, he wasn't feeling as bad as other times, but his doctor thought he needed immediate attention. My husband was immediately given attention and within 2.5 hours had bloodwork, and other tests including a cat scan to rule out a bowel obstruction. Thankfully, although there is scar tissue, and adhesions, he is ok, and was released with directives to follow a liquid diet through tomorrow. Thank God. He is home, feeling fairly well, a bit sore, but content with soup and ice cream.

Needless to say, though I had intended to do my recumbent bike interval, or even go on the wii fit, it is not happening tonight. I have rescheduled my workout for the morning.

For now, I will just take a moment and try to chill, being grateful for the blessings!
