Sick Day - Taking care of me!

I'm home sick today. Throat on fire! The plan for today is to rest, take airborne every few hours, drink tons of water, rest more, and eat healing foods like fruit and soup. I had a big exercise day planned, but know my limits. Pushing today will result in a total collapse later in the week. I'm putting all of my energy into healing today!

Positive thoughts lead to Elton John tickets!!

We went to my husband's work party at Dave & Busters last night. I usually find his work parties to be torture. I don't know too many of his coworkers, and his boss is a little like the TV boss on The Office. I think his heart is in the right place, but he's an akward MC.

Because I'm learning that my attitude has a lot to do with how things turn out, I tried to think many positive thoughts about the party. I had a plan for managing the party food. I focused on meeting new people, being a good guest, and just generally being a positive force in the room.

It paid off, big time. The grand door prize was tickets (good seats!) to the Elton John concert in Honolulu next month. I won them!!

I ended up having a good time at the party and taking tickets home, too! Yay for positive thinking!!

    That's awesome!!! I saw Elton John many years ago in NYC....maybe 20 or 25. Anyway, he put on a great show. I hope you enjoy it. And you're right.... having a good attitude does make a huge difference, even if it doesn't always result in winning the door prize.

December Distractions

The holiday season is here! For me, this season brings ambivalent feelings. Ho ho ho??

One one hand, I love the lights, excitement, and joy. On the other hand, I dread the rush, hassles, and stress. This time of year is particularly stressful for me because a) it usually involves a plane trip to the mainland to see family, and b) it coincides with the end of the semester, which is always a zoo no matter how well-prepared I am!

For me, stress brings strong cravings for holiday sweets. Honestly, it just feels so good to let go and sink my teeth into a brownie, or a piece of Almond Roca, or a christmas cookie. But I know from experience that eating such treats doesn't help me. The sugar and accompanying crash only makes me feel MORE stressed and makes me want to eat MORE. It's a vicious cycle that can - and usually does! - result in 10-15 extra pounds each year.

This year, I'll be trying a new technique of heading those cravings off at the pass. I know that probably won't be perfect, but every craving I can divert will be a victory. Experience tells me that I can overcome those cravings by distracting myself so that I forget about them.

Here's a list of things I can do to distract myself long enough to conquer those cravings:

1. Take my dog for a walk
2. Brush/floss my teeth of take a big swig of mouthwash
3. Have a cup of tea
4. Eat something healthy like yogurt, fruit, or a cheesestick if I'm really hungry
5. Chew on a piece of sugar free gum
6. Pop in a zumba video and dance!
7. Log onto Spark People and read an article or post to a message board
8. Call or text a friend
9. Yell "SERENITY NOW" (Seinfeld reference....)
10. Close my eyes and "just sit" for a few minutes
11. Try on clothes that I'm working my way down into
12. Look at old pictures of the fat me (what I don't want to look like again)
13. Look at my visual motivators
14. Turn on a good song and dance
15. Do a 10-minute workout
16. Browse for cute clothes in smaller sizes on the internet
17. Do something nice for someone
18. Pay someone a complement
19. Download a motivating song to my ipod
20. Download and learn to use a new app on my ipad
21. Do a mini spa treatment at home (face mask, manicure, pedicure)
22. Teach my dog a new trick
23. Look for and contact an old friend on facebook
24. Clean out a closet or drawer (believe it or not, sometimes this relaxes me!)
25. Play a wii game

Wow!! I can't believe I just listed 25 distractions off the top of my head! I can do this!!

A Spray Shampoo Victory!!

I was running late for work yesterday and had to make a choice between getting my workout in and taking a full shower. I chose the workout and didn't wash my hair in the shower. I used spray shampoo and put my hair in a "chic ponytail" for work.

I would never have done that a year ago. Now THATs progress.....

There are definitely things I do now that I wouldn't have done before. Go for a walk in the middle of the day? Wouldn't do that before "cux it's too hot". Now - drink more water and burn those calories!

Turkey Soup Three Nights in a Row

At the beginning of this week, I dedicated my efforts to losing the weight that I gained over my trip/thanksgiving before Christmas. It's totally doable - I just need to exercise a few times a week and but my calories by about 200 each day. I just need to focus. Sometimes that means I need to devote energies from other things (like housework!) to devote more energy to fitness.

We had the same dinner three nights in a row. Turkey soup and salad. The funny part about it is that I pride myself in putting healthy, varied, tasty dinners on the table for my husband who is picky about high quality food. I apologized to him for serving the same thing three nights in a row and he said that it didn't matter!

The stress that I've been putting on myself to please him was MY idea, not his! It's OK for me to relax a little on other things to take care of myself!
