Time Again to Spread the Spark

Monday, November 16, 2009

Wednesday I will be presenting my weight loss story again to the potential Gastric bypass patients at my medical group. This is the second time that I have been asked to participate. I plan to bring my manuscript copy of The Spark along with a few other books that were instrumental in my decision to pass up surgery. Along with the books, I will be showing the group my before pictures and my size 4x shirt. I plan to share my vision collage and of course I will pass out sparkpeople, You Have Been Sparked cards.
Presenting my story really helps me as much as it helps others. Recently I have been feeling like I haven't been really make any progress. So I checked back to the entry of four months ago when I presented to the group. Well, to my surprise I have lost 16 pounds in that time. Life so soooo good.

You are doing great. I love that you present another alternative to surgery (which is not a quick fix, like they advertise it to be). Keep sparking.

Boot Camp at LA Fitness

Sunday, November 01, 2009

Today I participated in a boot camp training session at my gym. Of course some of the exercises were modified for me because of my limitations with my knees. I kept up pretty well with all of the other participants. I even run laps around the gym. When they first said you are going to run, my first reaction was to say to myself "you can't do that." I haven't even tried to do that in at least 40 years. For the last few weeks during water aerobics class, we have been running laps back and forth across the pool. I have been secretly wishing that I could run on dry land. Well today I took the leap and tried it. And I am so happy and proud of myself. Today was a great day.

That is really good news to hear! I have been thinking about getting back to jogging again but I have a bad right knee that starts to bother me when I try to jog. Those pool exercises really worked for you! When you are in the water, you don't feel the workout but you are getting a good workout!

I can so relate to you I have severe arthritis in both knees and have bone on bone in the left knee that I had to get injections for. Luckily the injections worked but when my trainer wanted me to do laps I just looked at him with a blank stare and said the same thing you did I cant run but I tried and before I knew it I was jogging around the track something I never thought I could do so Im with you on this one emoticon Im proud of you

I found Sparkpeople after I had lost 80 pounds attending a very good weight loss clinic. The program ended and I found this fabulous site while serching for something online to help me continue to lose weight. That was a year ago and I am happy to say that I don't go a single day without checking in. Thanks to the wonderful support and great tools I have successfully lost 154 pounds. I have around 30 pounds to go and I am positive that I can do it. Thank you Sparkpeople.com!

love your blogs. Your little dog looks so much like my dog Buffy. If I can find a picture-I will send one later.
Is your dog full maltese? My Buffy is a mix.

I find your way of looking at weight loss inspiring. Last week (only my 2nd week) I didn't do well on "transforming" and got back into that old "diet" mentality-(you know-where you eat too much of something and decide to eat everything). But this morning I woke up
and realized its about changing my life and what I do on a day to day basis. I want to lose weight-but the big picture here is about living my life differently. Your site helps me realize that. Thank you

I am so Fired Up!!!

Monday, October 05, 2009

My spark has been fanned into a flame again. I am participating in the pilot book program and I also took the leap and joined LA Fitness. I am not one to waste my hard earned money so I am going to make it my business to go when ever possible. I have already lost almost 3 pounds. I feel so energized. Now instead of thinking about what I will eat next and what I will watch on TV, I am trying to figure out how I can get dog walks and dog park time in with time at the gym. The only thing holding me back now is having to go to work and sleep. Wow, I would never have dreamed that I would have problems like that. Life is good and getting fabulous!

This Is Not Just Another Diet

Sunday, September 20, 2009

When I started this weight loss journey the doctor at the weight loss center told me not to think of it as a diet. I really thought he was crazy. How could it be anything else but a diet? Since then I have learned that it must be a lifestyle change not just a diet. Mind you I have taken off 80 pounds three different times in my adult life only to quit before I got even close to my goal weight. I have never been able to maintain for even a week. I would be able to diet to a certain point and then one day just get tired of always being restricted. The doctor told me the reason I quit like that was because I did not have a variety of foods. I would be lazy and just eat the same things day after day, week after week because I thought that if I didn't think about food it would be less tempting to cheat. Now I know that variety is what will keep me going until I reach my goal. I am always looking for something new to try. If I feel boredom coming on I try a new recipe or a new store. So I say thank you Dr. Phillips, I could not have gotten this my far on journey without your words of wisdom. Life is so good!

One of the keys to a lifestyle change, is that. A change. Don't get stale in same blah foods day after day. Check out the recipes here on SP there is some wonderful chicken recipes, on here, I have made about 5 different ones. My favorite is the pecan crusted chicken breast with sugar free maple syrup. You dip it in the syrup then in the grinded pecans. I use almonds too, in fact I like the almonds better, but both are good. I change out different things, weekly, so I can have variety, I believe that is why I am successful with this life style change. And I definately stay away from sugar products.
I am a clean eater. And for almost 5 mos. have not strayed or eaten anything, that would mess with my journey. Another thing I have kept up faithfully every day is my food journal, it keeps me informed of what I take in every day. Very important, I believe that some people that don't, are not as successful.
Great Blog! MJ

My mom is really bad with eating sweets in front of me and then saying...oh sorry I know this must be hard for you...drives me nuts. Or when I am going out to eat with a friend and get asked....where can you eat at? My response is ALWAYS....anywhere I want to. I totally agree that a variety of foods is what is needed. I get tired of eating the same old thing day after day. I am constantly trying to find new recipes and new things to make.

I agree, but it is a tightrope. Sometimes the varieties of food I chose are close to poor choices so I have to be very careful.

The word "diet" makes me cringe, but this lifestyle change has been fun. I know you will keep the weight off for good this time. You have come so far, and done it all in a very healthy and positive way. I agree variety is important, even with the exercise routine. Keep shaking things up, and enjoy your new lifestyle.

Best,
Jeannie

You're so right, this is definitely a lifestyle. If you're "on a diet" eventually you're going to be "off the diet." Weight Watchers tells us to not eat things we don't enjoy. There are so many great things out there that are healthful. I'm also into trying new recipes and foods, was online today looking things up & printing them out for my recipe notebook.

Glad life is good & it'll only get better.
