Sharing My Weight Loss Story

Sunday, July 12, 2009

On this coming Wednesday I will be sharing my story with my medical group's gastric bypass patient education class. These patients are required to attend meetings once a month for six months. I was in the program myself last year at this time. I will be presenting another option other than gastric bypass. I know that most of the people that I will speaking to are not interested in hearing that there is actually another way to take off their excess weight am just going to give them the information about Sparkpeople.com in a way that they will maybe remember it when they feel that they need some extra help. I will be passing out the little spark cards and asking them to hold on to them for the future "just in case."
To tell you the truth, I just love spreading the spark. It is like some how I am throwing a line to a drowning man. Weight loss is truly saving someone's life. I want to be able to help as many others as I can.

What a wonderful gift to give people! Thank you for sharing your story with others. I've been trying to convince a friend of mine to come to the gym with me and change her diet because she's always complaining about her weight. Yesterday she told me that she's considering either gastric bypass or a lap-band procedure- before even giving living a healthy lifestyle a chance! She joined SP but hasn't been using it, but perhaps I'll have her read your page.

Oh, that is so cool. Good for you. My neighbors friend had the lap band put on around the time I signed up for Spark People. We have lost about the same amount, her was all lost the first few months (then it stopped because she isn't exercising or eating better). I always think how happy I am to have gone this route. I just feel like she doesn't have the same spring in her step that I have. Losing over 100 pounds should give you a spring in your step. Maybe this will change some minds.., you are truly an inspiration.

What an inspiration you are! It's hard work, but you are proof positive it can be done without surgery and the risks it carries. You are so generous to reach out to others.

I love your story! I too do not believe that the short term advantage of gastric bypass would do me much good in the long term. I've started telling everyone about SparkPeople too and hope that it can help people as dramatically as it has helped me! Thanks for being such an inspiration!

That is wonderful. I tried to offer my story to the local hospital that has programs on GP but they weren't interested. I think everyone should have as many options as possible. Good luck with your talk.

Thank You Dog Whisperer

Sunday, July 12, 2009

I have been having a difficult time walking my dog. She get so excited that she runs and pulls. Now granted she is only ten pounds of fluff but she sure can pull this old lady with a bum knee down the street. So far it has sure been a test of wills as to who is the boss. Today I saw an episode of the Dog Whisperer that featured two super hyper labs. Those two dogs practically had Cesar worn down to a nub. As I watched it just clicked. I tried his technique tonight while on our walk. It worked!! As we walked for a hour or so I began to think to myself, Why didn't I think of this before. I have lots of experience with children. The number one rule is while walking a group of children anywhere, You NEVER allow them to walk ahead of you. You are the leader of the group. So simple to do. So now I am looking forward to that evening walk even more than before.

Way to go, While we look for ways to make life a little easier the outcome always benefits us in ways we didn't count on. Thank you for sharing your experience. Caesar has changed my relationship with my dog as well. After seeing that show I made sure that I walk out of the house first and as long as I am consistent our walks a lot more enjoyable. We need to be "pack leaders" with our families as well. When they see us eating healthy meals, making healthy choices and with the changes that come from that they too will follow.

My Body Did Not Let Me Down

Wednesday, July 01, 2009

Yesterday I was able to enjoy the results of all my hard work eating healthy and exercising. I was able to actually go to the beach with my daughter and granddaughter. It was great to be able to walk across the sand lugging beach chair, umbrella and bags filled with stuff needed for a day be the coastline. We had a great day together. When it was time to pack up and head for the car my granddaughter began to whine and ask to be carried. Of course our arms were full, so she was told she had to walk. She began to huff and puff very dramatically and we all began to laugh. We were laughing so hard that we all stop before we all fell down. She continued laughing and huffing and puffing and throwing herself on the ground all the way through the sand. She is such a clown she will do anything for a laugh. I practically peed my pants laughing so hard. Then it was up a steep flight of stairs to the street which I climbed still lugging all the stuff. For a quick minute we discussed my daughter going and getting the car that was much farther away up a even steeper hill while I waited with the stuff and the 3 year old. I thought for a quick minute and decided that I could could make it up that hill. It was slow going and I stopped a few times to catch my breath. Wow, what a great feeling when I finally reached the car under my own steam!!!!!!! That's what you call a non-scale measure of success. Life is good

Truly, a terrific, fabulous non-scale measure of success! If I had a hat, I'd tip it to you! emoticon Not only was that several-stage walk so great, but that laughter exercised your organs! I just love the dramatic huffing and puffing! What a great story.

Good for you with the upgrade. What an achievement. Proud you.

Yes, kids make me laugh with their little darling tatrums. Show them the funny things when they hit 16. I did. One video hubby and I took at that age as your grandchild. She said. She thought she was mean. That is awful. With sighs watching it. Oh,no.

If we can laugh it breaks the stress of what we could do. We are only the Grandmothers. Hmmmm They are are little darlings. emoticon

A Good Time Was Had By All

Saturday, June 27, 2009

Today was a time to Show Your Spark with rallies being held in many different places. I attended the LA rally in Redondo Beach. It was really alot of fun. The park is right in front of the ocean so you have fabulous view of the waves. I connected with many fellow sparkers. We did group cardio and also yoga. We listened to the Spark guy speak and then we all took a turn spinning the spark wheel for points and prizes. We also had a chance to answer trivia questions for spark gear. A few others and and also myself were interviewed for the television show Entertainment Tonight. After being treated to Subway, we all said our goodbyes and promised to keep in touch. I sure had a wonderful time and I can't wait until there is another Sparkpeople event.

    Hi Lorraine,
Did the ET interview air? I have been out of town (camping, no computer or TV). I was curious how the rally went, and glad to hear it went well. I would have been there, if I was in town. I would have loved to have met you (and others) in person.
A picture of you with the sparkguy, I am so jeleous. emoticon

Best,
Jeannie

Preparing for the Spark Rally

Friday, June 26, 2009

I spent the morning trying to figure out a way to change up my Sparkpeople convention t-shirt. I don't like to wear t-shirts because my arms are really flabby. I also get a choking sensation from the collar. So I decided to make some changes. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. What do you think??
