Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge Week 1 Day 7

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Today is my last day for week one of the Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge. Overall I feel I did pretty well this week. I did notice last night that I was wanting something sweet. Overall, I think that seems to be when I get my cravings. I just need to make sure there are plenty of good, whole foods available. Once I eat a snack and I'm no longer hungry, the sweet craving usually goes away.

I learned on whole 30 that when you want something sweet, eat a good healthy protein and oil combo, and they will go away. They suggest deviled eggs. I know sounds weird, but it works!!!

Have a fabulous day!

So true! If I get that hankering, I find that if I cave...I still don't feel good. If I eat a good protein, the craving goes away.

The Weekend Was Good!

Monday, July 29, 2013

The weekend was good and productive. Even though I haven't been able to exercise (because of my fall down some stairs) and I went to the chicken fry at my friend's house on Friday, I still lost 2 pounds.

As for my sugar cravings. I did have one on Saturday. It was after I ate a not so healthy meal, Cheeseburger Macaroni. It doesn't surprise me. I've noticed that pasta has that effect on me.

Yesterday we worked on cleaning out our basement. We've been doing this little by little. My leg/ankle/foot was finally feeling good enough to be on it most of the day yesterday, so that helped a ton. I am reading the book The Total Money Makeover and I am even more motivated to declutter our house and sell the things we don't EVER use or want anymore to help aide us in becoming debt free.

I have really been trying to work on the whole me and not just a part of me. I want it all. emoticon I want to have a clean and clutter-free home, I want to be healthy and fit, I want to be debt free, I want to be a good mom and wife. It's hard work and I am by no means striving for perfection, but since I started this transformation, I have such a calmness to my life. I'm slowly realizing that I can have it all. I can have a less stressful life. SparkPeople is for sure a big part of this.

You have some great goals. I know you will feel much better being debt free. My husband and I got ourselves out of a few thousands of dollars in debt a cuple of years ago. We started pulling out cash and putting it in envelopes for things that needed to be budgeted..level groceries. I keeps you honest at the store when you only have cash with you.

Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge Week 1

Friday, July 26, 2013

I started the Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge on Wednesday and part of the challenge is to keep track of your sugar habits (when you crave them, etc). I've been keeping track, but the strange thing is, I haven't been craving sweets since I started the challenge. I did have one last night because we went to our local county fair. Who doesn't want something sweet there? emoticon I don't know if joining the challenge was enough to make me accountable or what is going on. I still have the weekend to go though, so maybe I will have some cravings then.

Speaking of the weekend. We are going to a chicken fry at my friends house tonight and that's all that I have planned so far. Even though I will be indulging in fried chicken tonight, I still plan to keep myself in check. I will stop when I feel full, savor each bite and make sure to still each the veggies and fruit that will be there as well.

I hope all you SparkFriends have a fabulous weekend!!!!

I'm trying new things

Monday, July 22, 2013

So I have been trying some healthy new foods lately, which is a pretty big deal for me. I'm fairly picky and don't like as many veggies as I do fruit. The first food I tried was asparagus and the other one was green beans. The asparagus was cooked on the grill. I need to do that again this weekend. It was so good! The other food was green beans. I've tried them in the past and hated them. This time I mixed them into mac n cheese and loved them! I know the mac n cheese isn't very healthy, especially since it was Easy Mac, but it's better than eating it without the green beans, right???

So as of right now the veggies I like are:

Raw spinach
Green beans
Green peppers (have to be on pizza or cooked into meatloaf, etc.)

Next on the list is squash. I've never tried it before. I'm a little intimidated by it. emoticon

Awesome job on the progression. I have learned it's one thing to keep your calories low, but isn't another to eat for nutrition. It makes you feel better from the inside out, and helps your body function at it's best. So good on you for taking the steps to introduce veggies into your new lifestyle. My favorite squash to grill is summer squash and zucchini. I chop them up in chunks, toss with a little olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper, and any herbs you may have. Then wrap the veggies up in a foil packet and put it on the grill. It will probably take about 15 maybe 20 minutes for them to cook all the way through.

Summer squash can be grilled just like the asparagus. Salt, pepper, olive oil, lemon juice (to taste), and grill until soft throughout. I just made that one for dinner. It was yummy! Be sure to not pick out a squash that is too large, those tend to be bitter.

I like spaghetti squash. I bake it with some spaghetti sauce on top and add a little bit of cheese.

Good job on trying new things.

Way to go on trying more veggies! I've always loved veggies so it's not a problem for me to eat lots of them. There are so many types of squash to try and I'm pretty certain you're going to like at least one, probably more as they are very mild. I would suggest starting with yellow summer squash sometimes called crookneck or zucchini. Pick out the smallest ones they have, they have the best flavor. You just wash them and slice them or you can cut them in chunks, no need to peel. I like to saute them in a little olive oil with some onion and italian seasoning and sometimes fresh tomatoes tossed in too. I add a couple tablespoons of chicken broth at the end to steam them until tender. Just be careful not to overcook them or they turn to mush. Another good idea is to just toss them in with your spaghetti sauce for a really subtle introduction. Also, look up spaghetti squash, its fantastic!

I think asparagus is my favorite vegetable! I love it steamed, sauteed, and grilled. I usually toss it in olive oil, lemon juice and black pepper before grilling it. Yum!

Sounds like that list is shaping up pretty well! Also adding veggies to ANYTHING is a step in the right direction in my book.

I am not big on veggies either. I recently (a few months back) tried asparagus and liked it a well. I steam mine and then put a little parmesan cheese on it. I will have to try grilling it sometime!

Have you ever tried cooked spinach in pasta dishes? I will eat raw in salads. Cooked by itself is gross but I put it in different dishes and you can't taste it much. Stuffed shells (not the healthiest but yummy) and I do a whole wheat penne pasta, chicken, with some mozzarella cheese and spinach dish type of thing that is decent.

20 Pounds Gone!

Sunday, July 21, 2013

I'm a little bummed because my fall down the stairs has slowed my progress. BUT, I've officially lost 20 pounds as of today! emoticon

Today is my last day that I have to keep my legs/feet elevated. The swelling is getting better, but I'm still having a good amount of pain. I thought I would share a pic...

See how much bigger my right leg and foot are? Ugh.

Anyway, the weekend has been great. We went to a family friendly party last night. The kids had fun and so did the adults. They even set-up a spot for me to be able to keep my legs up. emoticon Today, we have my niece's 6th birthday party to go to at 2 pm. Excited to be with my family, but I don't think there will be a place for me to elevate my legs, so I won't be able to stay very long.

I hope you all are having a great weekend!

Give the healing the time it needs. Rest/healing is just as important as exercise and eating well.

...on having lost those 20 pounds!!! I know that represents a phenomenal amount of hard work and discipline, but YOU DID IT! That's a major milestone you reached there, and I'm delighted for you!

You sound great despite what must've been a terrifying - not to mention painful - fall. But what a great attitude you have despite such nasty bruises and swelling. Take good care of yourself; you've got a bright future ahead of you - ALL of your own making, too! emoticon

Okay, I'm coming late to this story, you fell down the stairs and now you have leg/ankle swelling? Ouch! Those bruises don't look too good. I fell down the stairs once and ended up with big black bruises on my butt that didn't fade for months! Hopefully yours don't hang around too long. Is your back okay? If that swelling doesn't go down you might want to see a good chiropractor...Congrats on the 20 pounds down!! You know, even if exercise has to wait you can always focus on improving food and nutrition. Water exercise is no-impact if you need something different for awhile. Feel better!
