3 days gone = LONG UPDATE! You’ve been warned…
AHH PARTIES! The company and camaraderie was very fun. Work friends on Saturday night, family on Sunday (kids birthday party), and then work party AT work on Monday.
My super cute 3-y-o niece (the birthday girl!) on Sunday night: we were saying goodbye so I knelt down on the floor, and she climbed up on my lap & totally unprompted said “I’m glad to have you, Aunt Kate.” D’awwwwwwwwwwww. I’m glad to have you, too, baby. She’s the Most Cutest.
I did get to play with my “nephew” as well, which was fun. (my “nephew” is their cat.) We played with ribbon and shoelaces and then I gave him a Tb of whole milk for a treat (with parental permission of course). I have no pets of my own so I try to bribe other people’s pets to love me. It works about 42% of the time, hahaha.
I only was in my calorie range on Sunday, but I didn’t go over by much on the other two days. Still under 2000 calories, in the 1800s. So again, not in range but not TERRIBLE. 100-200 calories over. I only went over my fat grams on Monday, and that was my own stupidity – I didn’t put my recipes into the tracker ahead of the party, because I had no time, but as I was cooking I was going “Gee, there are like 6Tb of oil and 4Tb of margarine in this recipe…” so yeah, maybe don’t eat a whole serving until you check it, genius. I also ate two of those Lofthouse frosted sugar cookies… You know the ones? They are like meltingly soft poofy cake-like cookie with the thick layer of creamy icing on top? Two of those are like 380 calories, which is not so much a treat as a MEAL, so maybe ONE would have been a better choice. But HOLY CRAP THEY ARE DELICIOUS. I can’t eat any of those again until like…. June. Haha. I never buy them because… they are a problem.
I should probably take a moment to be proud of myself for not eating three.
I usually bake and bring goodies everywhere I go, but I was so overwhelmed by this weekend. I spent Saturday morning making chocolate truffles to bring. Just the centers rolled in cocoa kind, not the full on dipped in melted chocolate kind. Those I DID run through the recipe builder to get the calorie counts, so go me. But if I hadn’t spent so much time dealing with sticky chocolate, I could have done what I was SUPPOSED to do Saturday morning, which was start prepping the food I had signed up to bring to work on Monday.
Sooo yeah. I was at the Saturday party until like midnight. Had to get up early on Sunday to do a few things to get ready for the week, since between truffle making and parties my weekend was pretty much nonexistent. I did do laundry and finish packing up Christmas ornaments I made for husby’s family (to give to his mom to pass out, since we’ll be out of town for Christmas) but didn’t get to grocery shopping, which is still making me cranky as of right now. I have to go tonight.
Sunday we also go home late. We took the train out to Long Island, which was a disaster because the PATH line we normally take was inexplicably unannounced-ly closed. We had to stand in the rain, then take a shuttle bus to a different station, take the train to WTC then stand in the rain some more while husby crabbed about trying to get a cab, then instead get the subway from Chambers St. (I award Chambers St station the “smells the most like pee of any subway in my personal experience” prize) and finally to Penn station. I did have breakfast that morning, but not enough water, and all that took place over what would normally be lunchtime, so I was lightheaded and cranky. Fortunately I had a Clif builder bar in my purse so I ate that and felt better. God bless Clif bars, and let this be a reminder to me to bring some home next week. I did pretty well at the party. Then husby does not so much pay attention, so we didn’t get on the train until after 9pm. It’s about an hour plus getting home from the city, so I think we got home at 11:30pm or so. AT WHICH POINT I HAD TO START COOKING FOR MONDAY. UGH.
Although thank you Penn Station Duane Reade… I was out of vitamins as of Sunday morning, so I bought some more on the way home! Vitamins Every Day Streak remains unbroken.
I think it’s funny that I got my vitamins at Penn station...
But yeah you are probably seeing why I was looking at my weekend going AHHH Too many things at once!!!
So Sunday night I made a pie which was pretty quick and easy, and then a casserole which involved a two part making of sauce, making a breadcrumb topping, boiling pasta, and caramelizing onions. I don’t know why I saved the onions for last, but yeah, I was sitting on a chair nodding off in front of my stove at 1:30am caramelizing onions. Bleh.
I had to get up early-ish AGAIN Monday morning to finish off the crumb topper and put the casserole in the oven. I showered while it baked, and put on my Fun Holiday Outfit: I have a cute ruched v-neck in Kelly green, with a red cardigan over it, and red and green with jingle bells 1) hair clips, 2) dangly earrings, and 3) necklace. I have 3x piercings so I also wore teeny Christmas trees and teeny red studs. I normally wear red tights with a skirt and cute shoes but I was so tired I could not face the skirt, so I just wore jeans. OH but with jeans I wore my Chucks which I have in like 15 colors. So of course, green on my right foot, red on my left foot. Bam. My boss was impressed. Haha.
Work party was fun but kind of stretched all afternoon, hence the going back for seconds on cookies. I SHOULD HAVE gone to fill my water because what I really was was thirsty, but I was being lazy and enjoying games so I didn’t. I wasn’t hungry in the evening, though, just tired, so I got in a little more water & went to bed early. When I first tracked I was able to get the party food in a EXACTLY the top of my calorie range, but I don’t know how close some of the foods I used from the database were to the actual foods (like, half a miniature ham croissant… = 1/8 of an Arby’s ham croissant?? Who knows! This is totally how I track random food btw hahaha) and I only was able to do that by tracking 2/3 of a serving of my fatty casserole, when in reality it really was probably closer to a full serving. I kind of felt like I was lying to the tracker so I bumped a couple serving sizes up a little and I’m counting it as a day Not In Range. It might help my numbers on paper to lie but the scale will know better, so that’s not a habit for me to get into.
I’m still exhausted but a little better. I stopped on my way to work today & bought a yogurt because I JUST WANT TO BE BACK TO NORMAL for a while. Breakfast is a plain baked sweet potato and yogurt, full stop! Yesterday I had chicken salad for breakfast because I was out the good breakfasty stuff. GRRR!
Today is going well as far as being back on track. Somebody brought one of those huge tub things of pre-washed greens for salad yesterday, hardly any was eaten, and THEY DIDN’T WANT TO TAKE IT HOME(????), so WOO FREE SALAD. I have a giant salad & lentil soup for lunch. I had my Usual Breakfast plus a huge black coffee because ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzz so I’m feeling a bit better. Getting some water in needs to happen, and I may or may not swim tonight. I really want to, but I also have to grocery shop and send Christmas cards and such. Oh and sleep for a billion hours.
The scale was up this morning. I am talking myself into not caring. I was cranky at first, but I know perfectly well one does not gain a pound of fat in two days. Especially not from being 400 calories TOTAL over my “weight loss” range! I should still be at a calorie deficit for the 3 days, even with the “overeating.” So yeah, reason shall prevail. I’m guessing from a little extra carbs and sodium, less fiber and water I’m retaining some water weight, plus not to be indelicate but probably some, you know… “less fiber and water” weight. I was hoping to be 259 or 258 for Christmas, but I’m not taking my scale with me so I won’t know anyway so what does it matter. If I’m back to 260 before I leave, and 260 or less when I get back, it really is fine. (I'm 261 today if it matters, but I didn't update my ticker and won't unless I'm still 261 at the end of the week.)
I didn’t meet my stretch goal for protein or fiber any of the 3 days, but I’m pretty impressed I only went over fat and sodium 1 day, considering all the party food. Fruits and veggies and water were low, but surprisingly didn’t tank my averages as badly as I thought they would! I’m still kicking August, which I remind myself because I get cranky when I’m like “well LAST WEEK I was averaging 8 a day!” I’m such a turd, hahaha.
I need to plan better for days like that. This is a good reminder for me, kind of a test run, that when I go home to my parents for a week, I need to go grocery shopping. Stock up on my Usual Breakfast, plus a whole bunch of veggies to cut up for snacking plus actual non-iceberg salad. Because I know my family, and there will be a house full of empty carbs, sandwich stuff, cheese and crackers, etc. I also need to be prepared for foods that I normally don’t keep around that are a problem for me. (*hello Town House crackers, the heroin of food. Also, frosted cookies.)

If the second half of December looks anything like the first half, I’ll kick August without hardly breaking a sweat. So yeah. Calm. It’s fine.

I was caramelizing onions at 1:30am last night. I'll save the REST of that story for tomorrow afternoon, along with my Days 15-16-17 updates. Holiday or other type parties ALL THREE OF THOSE DAYS by the way. I'll be 1/3 for staying in my calorie range, but I'm not, like, going to hell in a dietary handbasket or anything. It could be worse.
No gym this morning because did I mention the 1:30am and the onions???
Maybe I'll swim tomorrow, but right now ALL I WANT TO DO IS SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.
I won a rousing game of Trivial Pursuit this afternoon though. And I won an impromptu Most Christmassy Outfit award.

I'm almost to the halfway point, which is crazy. I think I'm going to use Dec 16 as "halfway," so maybe I'll take my measurements again.
I'm trying to decide something... Should I keep blogging while I'm away for the holidays? I'll be out of town Dec 22-30. I could blog from my parents' house and keep going which would help me stay accountable and motivated.
On the other hand, I do kind of want to do a big wrap up on Jan 1. There will be no suspense whatsoever as to whether or not I Kicked August if I post every day; it will be pretty obvious in the numbers.
OR ALSO I could split the difference - post for Kick August through Dec 26 or so, and then 27-31 can be a surprise. Cliffhanger!! DID I MAKE IT??? hahaha.

Another thing I'm thinking of doing is taking some screenshots of charts and stuff. I've had a couple people comment that they could never take the time or patience to look at the numbers the way I am, and really it's so much easier than you guys think. I can show where I got all the August numbers, and the Dec stuff takes hardly any time. I might even time myself tomorrow so I can tell you exactly how long it takes me to update my Kick August numbers.
I guess I should call this "Decisions decisions DECISIONS" because I thought of a third thing.
I have been thinking about sharing my food and fitness trackers.
This is weird for me. I don't know why I didn't share them originally; I guess I was afraid I would be terrible at this and then have the added humiliation of people looking at my tracker and seeing that I ate half a cake or something. I mean the point of tracking is I don't eat half a cake because I don't want to have to figure out how to track it, but you know....
But I'm feeling like, if it's possible it would help even one person then it's a good thing.
Maybe it's the holidays, or the rapid approach of the end of the year, but I have been seeing a lot of people feeling down around Spark lately, and I wish I could help.
