Finishing Strong and Trying Again in April

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Well, I worked hard this month, got in almost all my fitness and cardio minutes...and will have them by the end of the day tomorrow (I believe), but am quite a bit short on miles. I had also hoped to lose thefinal couple of pounds. Since the first of Feb., I have been hoping to drop to 130 (so that would have been 7 pounds total, but I see to be hovering at the half way mark. I have lost some inches and body fat percent and gained muscle, so I will be content with that, continue doing what I am doung and shoot for the same goals for the month of April.

Looking forward to a "day off" work tomorrow. Will start it off with an abs class and then spin. I can definitely see an improvement in my abs and back strength as well as my cardio and leg and arm muscles. Of course, I still have alot farther to go, but as long as I can see progress, I can keep moving ahead. It sure is slow going, but it is stepping out in the right direction.

Ready to Face the Week Head-On

Sunday, March 27, 2011

Sunday, aahhhh, my favorite day of the week....even when I have to start it with a meeting at work (just 8 hours after leaving the place last night). Survived though and that got me going early which was good. I was able to get grocery shopping done after the meeting and before church. Then, a wonderful service and message and got to see some old friends who are in town visiting. Gosh, those kids grow up soooo fast!

After church, I went on the hunt for a swimsuit....I haven't bought one in years, and I literally "swim" in my old ones. They are absolutely "indecent" now that I have lost weight, so before the seaon gets here, I thought I would start looking. My, my, my, they have gone up in price (like everything else.) I usually try to find most of my clothes at resale or at least discounted somewhere, but there appears to be slim to no chance of that when it comes to a swim suit (especially this early in the yea). I have a few weeks though, since it is still dipping below freezing at night. Good thing I started looking now, trying to stay on a budget and buy a suit that is functional and looks good on this 50+ year old body (which skin that hasn't quite "snapped back" (sorry about the TMI, but I'm sure you all understand) will take some time if I don't want to go into debt. I was able to get a couple of nice tech shirts for working out and a pair of jeans, a pair of pink cordorouys, some GV slacks and two pairs of capris, a sweater set, two other shirts and a halter (which really looks pretty good if I do say so myself. Carson's days items came in at the resale, so I picked up 12 pieces for about $40. even and was able to purge a bunch more out of my closet that isn't exactly attractive on any longer.

Got a couple of extra meals prepared and ready for the busy week ahead, plus fruits and veggies all cut up and ready to go. Peanut flour is not here yet, but UPS tracking says that it should arrive tomorrow....yipppeeeee!!!!

Precious darn little fitness or sparking done, but stayed within limits aside from being a smidgen low on calcium. Aside from that I am sitting quite well, preparation wise, to be able to keep up with the week ahead.....hope you all have a great one!

Good luck on finding the swimsuit. I just bought a one piece for this 50+ body. Had to finally retire the bikini ;-( after many years. Love tankinis but could not find one. Mine is pretty cute though black with white polka dots. Marily Monro style looks like it is coming back.

I am going to be 54 this September and two years ago I tried a Tankini and love it. I don't think I would ever go back to a one piece seeing I need a long torso and they are hard to find. A good time to find a good price on bathing suits is at the end of swimsuit season. I bought one at Macy's for thirty dollars and it's regular price is sixty to eighty dollars. I am hoping to get another one while I am on vacation in Myrtle Beach. I got three four years ago in Virginia Beach. They weren't Tankini they were two peice which I only wear in my own pool not in plubic. I can't believe they are still holding together. So good luck bathing suit shopping.
I am so glad to had a productive day yesterday. Have a good week. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Accepting My Limitations

Friday, March 25, 2011

So, today I worked a full day and had to stay late. Not sure what I did to my leg/groin muscle, but half way through the day it got very sore. Also found out that I have to go in earlier than I was scheduled for tomorrow and work another full day, not getting out until 10 PM or so. Sunday, I have to be back ther for an early AM metting (6AM), then church and then I am meeting two of my running buddies at an outside track for a run together. One of them is the first running buddy I ever had, and who got me running 5K's. We haven't run together in months...probably since last July or August.

Busy, busy week-end, so, given the sore muscle and the fact I have a short run tomorrow and a pilates or yoga class in the morning before work, I decided that it would be the wisest thing for me to just get to bed....rest the leg....full nights sleep and not do anything that might further irritate my leg. Got in 15 mins of crunches, planks and leg lifts just to remind myself that I need to keep working on my core strength and now, dear Sparkfriends.... emoticon

Ouch! You were right to rest those muscles. Leg lifts? Praying you heal quickly and you are blessed through your busy day.

It's not easy to balance it all out... ;-) I get up early for my workout too... and tomorrow I have to work 9-4 out in Schaumburg at my CTU job... and I agreed tonight to work 5:30-9:30 at my JCP job ...and then after church working Sunday too at JCP..before going back on Monday to CTU again...and trying to keep up my workouts, etc... Had today off and did errands with my husband... was a nice change of pace... we all need those "rest" days too in our "balancing acts" ... Have a good day tomorrow...!!! ;-)

Learning New Lessons About Balance

Thursday, March 24, 2011

I'm sue I'll never get it totally right until the day I die, but this past couple weeks have taught me whole new lessons about balance. Number one being that just because I CAN do something doesn't mean that I SHOULD. I have been going gang busters with keeping up my fitness, and as a result, my appetite has gone through the roof. I HAVE made great strides, but I may (and I say just may) have gone a bit overboard. What iwth the migraine and the drop in my blood pressure, I had to slow up this week, and my body appreciates the break. Today, I still did my ab and spin workouts, and tomorrow, I will hopefully do abs and definitely do a run, but I have seriously cut back my calorie burn to around 2500-3000 cals. a week instead of 4000 or so. I have also made myself get closer to the 8 hours of sleep that my body needs, but that I don't ever give it, though I have gotten better. The difference in my energy level, thinking and mood today are markedly higher. I will need to be keying on this balance more during the next three weeks or so as I prepare for my 10K. I need to make sure that I go into this not just physically trained, but rested and balanced. It may be my biggest challenge yet, but as with everything else that I have learned since joining Spark, it is merely being aware and focused and I WILL DO IT!!!

Keep Sparking Everyone!

This is something that even athletes forget about. When you train for a big race in swimming or running they actually tell you to rest the couple of days heading into the race so that your body has time to repair itself. I think this is something that when you are trying to change your lifestyle is very difficult to remember. Especially because you are trying so hard and feel guilt if you take a couple of days off. At least I know I did until your blog.

Keep it up and Good Luck on your 10K! emoticon

    Balance is very important!

I get the feeling you are a person who tends to go all out -- until you can't anymore! I have the same tendencies, but have learned that I need to balance activity with rest and also allow, even embrace changes.

Balance...I think that can be a tough one for most of us. I'm very much like you. If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it now and go all the way. However, our bodies do require breaks and changes. Good for you finding that balance that will work for your body. I am SO happy for the accomplishments you've made thus far, and am looking forward to where you're going.

I'm right here with you! emoticon

Mystery Solved - (or at least I hope)

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Hopefully I have figured out the issue that caused the intense headache and drop in my blood pressure. For many weeks now, peanut flour, (defatted roasted peanuts ground into a flour) which I have used in baking, oatmeal or mixed into my own homemade "peanut butter" with fruits and veggies has been a staple in my daily diet. At 110 cals per serving, with only 4g of fat and a whopping 16g of protein, it has been a nourishing and tasty staple in my healthy eating way of life. However, a couple of weeks ago, I found out that the only store that carried it, Trader Joe's had discontinued it and though I have literally search everywhere, there is currently no other store carrying it. I also checked the internet and there is a suitable substitute (PB2) available my mail order, and the website says that Target carries it. I have checked several times over the past couple of weeks and though they are resetting that section...it is still not in. Nor is it exactly the same. Well, today, after much research, I looked up the nutritional content of the peanut flour I was getting and it also has a whopping 1150mg of potassium per serving!!! No wonder since I have not had it, my hunger and restless legs and now low BP are surfacing!!! I found another site that sells peanut flour and one of their formuations has a nearly identical nutritional makeup to that which TJ's carried and I believe that it may actually be the same product. I am confident enough that it the culprit and that this is indeed the same product only under the manufacturers label, that I have purchased a 1/2 case (6 - 1lb bags) or about a 3 month supply. Hopefully it will get here soon! With shipping I am looking at about $33.00 but that is a small price to pay. I will let you know the results within a couple of days after it arrives....in the meantime, am stocked up on Gatorade and my sis has some potassium tablets I may try. It may not help the uncontrollable cravings, but if it keeps the BP up and the headache away....I'll make it till the shipment comes in. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and encouragement regarding this episode...it was very disconcerting, but helpful to know that so many were in my corner helping me to figure this out and to not give up!

So glad you found the product you were looking for! You are so smart to get a three months supply of your needed item of food. It is interesting the stores bring in healthy items and if enought people do not buy it, we who some to count on it have it taken away. I have had that happen several times. Very frustrating indeed. I will remember you in my prayers and do hope you get to feeling better. Love, Charlene

I eat a banana everyday to keep my potassium up seeing I am on a diuretic. If I don't I become dizzy and light headed. They are high in potassium.
I am glad you found your flour . Make sure you drink your water that can also give you headaches if you don't drink enough water.
