Day Seventy-three - Cinderella - 3/15/10

Aaaahhh, it's almost ten and I go back to work tomorrow, but I do it knowing that I am finally as caught up as I can get without taking vacation. Got a couple extra meals made and portioned. Over half the laundry done and tons and tons of e-mails and sparking and cleaning and animal attention and shopping - all done, done, done. I even ran tonight - which I probably shouldn't have since I ran yesterday, but I had to! You see.......

I did it! I splurged and treated myself to my 20 lb reward! I got the emoticon!!! Actually, my sis knew how hard I was trying to find last years model in my size so I could get them Friday when I get paid, so she loaned me the money until Friday. I was on no less than 8 websites and more phne calls than you could count. "Do you have ladies Gel Kayano -15's in stock in a 9 1/2?" One place did have them for the same price ($140) that the new ones cost everywhere else, and one place in CA had a pair by mail order (which kind of scaed me, but heck , to save $45.00 I was going to do it as long as they still had them on Friday.) Determination really pays off though....I found a place late this afternoon, while cooking dinner, that had one pair. They were $98 which is more than I've ever paid for ANYTHING to put on my feet, but oh, I feel like Cinderella - or maybe Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. I even let them talk me into the extended warranty. Asics covers them for 30 days, but with that invested, only $10 extra covers them for an additional year! Total Replacement! Plus that extra $10 put the purchase over $100 which qualified me for a $25.00 gift card so I acually wound up ahead. I'll go back and get some socks or a sport bra or insoles or something later.

They definately make a difference in the way I walk and run. My foot pronates when I walk and quite dramatically when I run, so especially on the treadmill, I have had to keep one hand on the treadmill to keep from running crooked and falling off. These shoes have a stabilizer and guidance system FOR YOUR FOOT that keeps me running with better form and straight! The side of my leg is telling the whole story now! I think I may be working some muscles more than I was and may need to adjust a little, but my knees and hips feel GREAT! I let you all know more as I get more used to them. I almost hate to wear them outside, but gonna have to do it sooner or later - probably sooner.

Okay, so that's what's new here. I'm pumped, but have learned well enough that I need to get sleep or these crazy stretches start to take their toll way to early.

    WoW!!! new shoes emoticon You really need to reward yourself for all the pounds you lost. Shoes make lots of difference while running ,especially on treadmill. I always wear my sports shoes while I run on it. emoticon emoticon

I invested in spinning shoes on Valentine's Day & am definitely noticing that I was working my feet instead of my legs which are finally getting toned....

    I am so happy for you. Your shoes will totally make a difference for you when you run. You will be so ready for that 5K.

I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to get them dirty. It is a huge investment and you want to keep them looking great. You'll take them out on a road run soon because you'll want to know how they do on the road.

Day Seventy-two - Twenty Pound GONE! - 3/14/10

Okay, this is weird, I just entered my blog and went to post it...got and error message, something about html??? and it was gone - got the points, but no blog. I shut down and restarted and it is nowhere to be found, so here we go again!

It's OFFICIAL emoticontwenty pounds GONE! Actually yesterday, the emoticonflickerd back and forth 157.5/157/157.5/157 etc., but today it was solid. I even moved the scale and rechecked twice. It's for real! Twenty pounds lighter than 1/2/10!!! emoticonThat's the same as an automobile tire, and I am happy to say, I do seem to have lost a spare tire from around my waist - it's down 3 1.2 inches so far! emoticon I still have a way to go, but this is a great start. Right now, I think I would like my final goal at just under 140, but we'll see as time goes on.

Which brings me to my next quandry...what to reward myself. I had thought at first a new hair do, but the old one is working and as much as I have it pinned up for work and running, I think there might be better ideas. My next idea, and I think I'm going with it, is a new pair of running shoes. More expensive than the hair, but will hopefully last longer and be more practical. In addition, I'm not getting any younger and the new shoes (which cost more than anything I have ever had on my feet) are still cheaper than new knees or a new hip. If anyone has any suggestions or feedback on shoes please feel free to respond. I am planning on making the big purchase this next weekend (unless I can find a great deal on the Asics Gel Kayano.) I might be able to pickup a pair of last years model mail order from the internet for $89.00 - this new years is $140. and I don't see anything structurally different from last years 15's to this years 16's.
It seems any really decent pair with the stabilizer I would like to correct the way my foot seems to roll is going to be at least 79.00 and if you've ever put a pair of the Gel Kayano's on yoir feet - WOW!!! - I can see why they cost more and are so highly rated!

I'm going to have to work on myself this week - convincing myself that this is a good investment. Especially after grocery shopping today. What happened to food prices these past two weeks?!?!?!? Is it everywhere or just here in the Chi. burbs? Fruit and vegetable prices seem to have gone through the roof and they look like - well, yuck!

After the shopping expedition, I got in D3W4 of C25K, and today, athough my times were not blazingly (I think I just invented that word) faster, at least it didn't kick my butt like the first two days. I think I'm going to do week four for one more run, just to make sure I'm pretty comfortable with it before going on to week 5. Either that or week 5 is just scaring the tar out of me!!! emoticon

I guess that's it for today - for the second time...still have lots of e-mails and spark friends that I need to catch up with and I'm just going to keep going till the dent is more noticable - I'm off tomorrow, but have a lot of cooking to do and a fridge that is in desperate need of cleaning out.

Congratulations on reaching a 20-pound loss!!! Your dedication and commitment to yourself is paying off, and here you are wearing low-rider jeans and buying running shoes and loving life and inspiring us all! YOU are what SparkPeople is all about!

As for your reward, I say a big resounding YES! to the running shoes. I like to make my rewards tangible gifts to myself that I can hold or look at and say, "This represents my 20-lb. loss" or "This represents my 50-lb. loss."

For my 20-lb. loss, I got myself a garnet ring, and whenever I wear it, I remember the anticipation of hitting that 20 lb. mark, how I felt the day I finally picked the ring up and wore it, and how great it felt to know that I had actually reached that point.

I bet you are inspiring your sisters and all your church friends and your coworkers!

    About the HTML error code thing. I've noticed that if I put in any odd characters (I can't put them in or it will error me) but they are mainly associated with HTML codes, that was probably it. I've gotten that with e-mails, and have to go back in and I find out that some of my emoticons are hooked together, meaning they're not separated. Next time, just keep looking at all your emoticon links, and make sure they're separated fully.

    This is huge. 20 pounds feels like a lifetime ago, doesn't it?

As far as shoes, it is exactly what I did when I hit 20 pounds. I decided to go to a running store. They look at the way you walk (if your feet kind of roll in or out) and then have you try on a few. I ended up going with a New Balance shoe. I'm not even sure of the number. I knew I was going to spend $120-150. These shoes ended up being $130.00. I can really tell the difference.

The running shoes sounds like such a good idea... I keep trying to come up with reward ideas for myself too... I don't think I can afford a new pair of shoes right now myself... But I'm thinking of a pedometer...(which I think you mentioned you got for yourself already...) - I finally ordered "The Spark" and I got Coach Nicole's DVD "Cardio Blast"... and I'm really enjoying some new opportunities for some different workout ideas...

Day Seventy-one - Stop the Insanity - 3/13/10

Thank God for good friends! It is almost ten (actually nine, but I've set the clocks already) and I'm typing out a quick blog and going to bed. That is as soon as I text a couple of friends who are holding me accountable.

I got home from work and immediately started trying to catch up on Sparking and e-mails and tracking etc etc etc....and hour and a half later, a friend called and asked me to come over for a corned beef and cabbage dinner. My first instinct said "no", because "I have too much to do" and my second instinct said, "no" because I know what a killer that meal can do to my nutrition for the day and I wasn't done planning on my tracker, but then my third instint said, "you need to do SOMETHING for you - and you won't have to cook and won't have a kitchen to clean up." Guess which instinct won out!

It was REALLY good!!! We had a great visit, and although I did not get my fitness in (now two days in a row), I have two days off now and can get in extra on those two days. I got five days this week - three of C25K and two of weight trng and cardio cross training, plus all the walking at work (today alone was just over 5 miles). My friends are holding me accountable for getting some rest, so I am allowed to track - which I did and the whole dinner I ate just put me into my nutritional range in all catagories - including the 1/4 cup pistachio pudding. They even gave me a plate to bring home to sis, so NO cooking and the kitchen is relatively clean!!!

I'm down to 35 unread messages and quite a bit of Sparking, but I will have to do that tomorrow because now I am 10 mins late on texting in my "i'm in bed status" and that's the deal to get them to do our fitness together tomorrow evening. Got to go emoticonNightey night!

Day Sixty-nine - Doing What's Good For Me - 3/11/10

Gosh, I'd love to say that I got all caught up today, but, truth be told, I'm just a little more behind than yesterday. Ate my food, did a good strength workout and a little cardio, a little sparking and made a dessert for a farewell party tomorrow night, did my tracking and now I'm blogging. Still need to do 30-45 mins of reading/ homework, but it's only 9:30. Probably should be getting to bed right now since I was tired today, but I'm making progress - normally I'd just keep going until I got much more done. I am beginning to realize the importance of rest in being able to move forward on this journey. I still don't know if lack of sleep actually has an effect on overall weight loss or gain, but it definately DOES have an effect on my ability to give 100% to the actions that I need to do to stay on track, so at least indirectly, it could undermine everything I'm working so hard to achieve. So, as hard as it is, I'm going to call it quits for the night and make tomorrow a well rested, and more productive day because of it. emoticonBye! emoticon

    Getting more rest is something I totally need to work on. I know that I am happy and just function better on 7-8 hours of sleep. I have been getting 5-7 hours lately. Well, one night this week I actually got 8.

I was just commenting to Jen how I feel so heavy on my feet running this week. I wonder if that is the reason. I'll have to ponder that thought and blog about it after I've been giving my body the proper rest it needs. I wonder if it will make a difference on the scale for me. I'm still losing a little each week.

Thanks for this blog. I think you just helped me solve my issue.

    Sleep well!!! Rest is REALLY important in my opinion for two reasons... one your body can accomplish more when you're well rested and two you're not up all night to be tempted by more food!!! Some nights I go to bed early just to avoid the refrigerator!!!

Day Sixty-eight - I'm Making Progress - 3/10/10

Monday's run was really worrying me. I've been dreading today (D2W4) ever since I finished my run Monday. I had some of my worst times and it was REALLY hard. I finished, but it kicked my butt and I was more sore from that run than I have been in a long time. So today, when I logged over 14,000 steps at work and then had to get in my run after dinner, I figured, "well, I'll just get on there and do it and hope for the best." It was still tough, but I was able to push a little harder tonight and wound up doing two 12min miles finishing the training plus a little extra. I'm trying to make sure that I do 3 miles on training day, whether as a part of training or extra before or after. I may still do an extra day of week 4 just to make sure that I can do it without too much difficulty before going on to week 5, but even that is an improvement because after Monday, I figured that I'd be on week 4 for 2 weeks.

On a lighter note, I made the Spark Recipe - Tuscan Chicken Milano for dinner tonight....It was really good - very rich! I used fat free half and half and fat free chicken broth (since there is already 2Tblsp of olive oil and sundried tomatoes packed in olive oil, I figured there was enough fat. I also used 3 Tlbsp Parmesean instead of 2. My sister really loved it!!! I think next time, I might add some fresh spinach at the end to cut the richness a little and add some veggie and vitamins.

Oh well, it's after 10 and I'm back up at five and still have 1/2 hour of reading to do, so better sign off. I know how far behind I am, but if I don't get my sleep it will only get worse....Have a Sparking great day tomorrow everyone!!!
