This is the simplest on preventive measures that I've had so passing it along....

Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in mos official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (except to eat or bathe).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms, gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot to clean nasal cavities, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5.. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

road trip 10-23-09

We took another road trip to Half Moon Bay. It was a very windy, cool day. It got warmer as we rode our bikes. I went from long pants and jacket to shorts & T shirt. We heard the Maverick season was starting and was hoping to see some big waves. The Maverick is a surf contest at HMB. The season starts Nov 1 - it is when the surf is at its highest for the contest. It is when conditions are just right. Normally the waves are not so high along the coast. There was a cyclone in Alaska, the effects of it made conditions good for the surfers to come out and try to catch the big wave. The actual contest is announced sometimes just 2 days in advance - of course this was not the actual contest but it was fun watching the Maverick wannabees... emoticon




The surfers were all lined up - there were about 15 when we stopped to watch and when we left there were about 30 - looked like they would get in each others way. It was a sight to see. Our ride was a short one - the wind was against us going - but coming back it was a breeze. emoticon It was a nice but tiring day going against the wind and the coolness made this old body a little stiff and sore! Most of our time was sitting on the rocks and watching but we did get about a 12 mile ride - 6 to the surf point and 6 back.

Driving there we took a mountain road. It is usually the highway up and over the mountain but this time we drove along the mountain through the red wood forest. It was a nice winding road with some views but it took us twice as long to get to our destination...



We had a nice day off - relaxing and also a good tiredness when we got home.

I will make this quick since I am off to work today...

1 week on flat belly diet - basically eat healthy like I already am but add a mufa (monounsaturated fatty acid) a healthy fat to every meal and a snack - so that is 4 a day. I love it almonds, pb, dark chocolate, avocado all those things that I would sparingly use - but I have to keep it in calorie range. They fill up so there is no hunger between meals but it takes some getting use to by re-figuring my mind with meals.

So the results are: 2 lbs lost - 1 in from waist, 1/2 in from arms, bust, & neck. Same on hips. emoticon

I know I have to stay diligent on calories - but I think it is working. emoticon

Starting day 3 of js
I actually like the sassy water - eat the cucumbers for a treat at the end of it.
I have lost about a 1.5 lb so far. I imagine that is mostly water but hey I will take it. I am following the menu plan pretty well - with a few exceptions. The js really cuts out the fats, sugar, caffeine. So it is working well. I actually eat pretty much the same things already - just need to eat more of the healthy fats with it and stay in calorie range when I get to normal eating after the js is over.

Day 1 of the Flat Belly Diet - gonna try to change it up. Been looking at it for a while wondering is it too good to be true emoticon and yes, there is a SP Team for it!

But it is a change to jump start a loss and end a plateau for me. The concept looks good - I like most of the foods - so hey lets get started.

Today is day 1 of the 4 day jump start - I am following meal plans and drinking my sassy water which I kinda like (cucumber, lemon, ginger, mint) tasty, but the ginger is a bit strong but I like it. I love all of those ingredients just haven't quite had them like this.

I gained a lb this week - too much snacking at bedtime after logging in all my food for the day - which was good - but then..... a little turned into too much snack emoticon

I am starting fresh with measurements & weigh in. This is the first time I have recorded a gain - I usually just leave it until I lose it again. And the first I have recorded measurements. I didn't measure when first starting SP - too embarrassed and wish I had to really know what I was compared to how I am.

So I am recording before this new phase of eating:
weight 140
waist 33
hips 37
neck 13.5
arm 12.5
There it is plain as day - will be happy to report losing inches & lbs... emoticon
