birthday bash - blessing or curse

Saturday, August 22, 2009

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I love being with family, love the Grandkids. August is a big birthday month with 4 birthdays and 2 anniversaries in the family (even other extended family occasions). We usually get together the end of the month and celebrate. Last night was the night - the boys picked out the Luau deco for me for my birthday so we put them up. We celebrated Orson 4, Me, & Alex 7 this time.

So a blessing or curse? This week the scale was teetering down - after a healthy lots of fruits and veggies, HEALTHY HOME MADE WHOLE GRAIN VEGGIE pizza and cake - the scale is a solid UP! After all the menu was my choice - it was healthy but notice it was LOTS. That is ok - I will get back on the plan - Oh and of course no time for exercise - I will get back to that as well.

I use that word curse loosely - I am in control and I chose to eat the extra pizza and stopped at 1 1/2 pc of cake - that will be my high calorie day... I am BLESSED!
Pic of some of my booty - gift cards for new clothes to fit...

I will be glad when I can get back to a normal routine. I have also had some issues at work with a mgr leaving and new one coming in, stress with that and extra hours worked which breaks up the day and makes our normal routine of exercise time being challenged.

But still LIFE IS GOOD! emoticon

Friday Birthday ride

Sunday, August 09, 2009

We planned to ride the 17 Mile Drive from Pacific Grove Gate to Carmel - but it didn't quite go as planned but turned out well. I was on the phone with my daughter (birthday wishes) and dh missed the turnoff, so we went to the Hwy 1 gate. As we turned in the road was narrow just for cars and hilly and windy - just didn't look bike friendly to share the road with cars. We drove along looking at the sights - I love that view, always nice. As we got about halfway around, the road widens and we begin to see more bikes AND there is a bike lane! emoticon

So we got out at a pull off place where there is bathrooms (essential) and picnic tables. We got the bikes off and took off along the coast towards the Pac Grove gate. My bike computer (odometer) wasn't working so not for sure but I think we rode about 5 miles - it was a nice ride with minimal hills. emoticon

We noticed that both of us had low tires and cut it short to find some air. After we had a picnic, we drove to Carmel but was crowded and didn't have parking space for car with bike rack on the back. So we ended up back in Monterey on the path we rode before. It was right down the middle of Cannery Row - we did some shopping along the way and as we continued, found we were along the coast almost up to the Pacific Grove Gate. Odometer was working and it was a 10 mile run that time. It was a nice ride - wide path not too many cars and challenging with some hills but not too steep and the views were great. Before going back to the car we stopped at Bubba Gumps for a birthday dinner.

You will see in the pic the servers sang Have a happy birthday shake, shake, shake - give us a birthday shake, shake, shake, they went on and on louder until I got the message and gave them a little shake and they stopped. It was a fun time dh ate most of the choc shake - we split the shrimp dinner (even tho it was fried) and the salad tasted so good. We did split the spinach & artichoke dip - so went way over in calories - more than we burned probably - but it was a good splurge day - - - emoticon

Just a few pics of the views we saw on our ride.

Shoreline & Stevens Creek trail

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Today we did a 16 mile bike ride along the San Francisco Bay at Shoreline Lake trail which connected to Steven's Creek Trail.

We sat by the Shoreline Lake and had a picnic lunch some of the sights are shown. They rented out sailboats, paddle boats, kayaks and windsurf board. It was a nice relaxing scene.

It was marshland and there were all sorts of birds - we saw pelicans out in the water going after fish and geese, geese, and more geese were all over the grounds

We rode past NASA at Moffet Field where we saw a blimp outside one of the hangers there.

The ride of course was scenic when close to the Bay and relatively flat until we got away from the Bay around freeways and city streets which we either went under or up and up and passed over. Coming back we were riding against the wind of the Bay - which was very strong. It felt like we were climbing but the trail was flat. I noticed that I was exceptionally more tired than usual and wondered why. Then realized it was the heat - it has always been cooler, low 60's instead of 80's. We always take plenty of water and protein foods - that helped.

I have had trouble getting my gears going right so the hills are always a stretch for me... I think I am getting better but still can't keep up with DH on his mountain bike. I just keep peddling away. emoticon

Monterey Bay Coastal Trail

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Yesterday we took our bikes to Monterey Bay. We parked at a shopping center at Sand City and got on the trail. The trail took us north on the Fort Ord grounds - it is an old naval base I think - it was just a trail and abandoned road for trails along the coast, there were old bunkers you could see in the distance - it was a nice ride, but a little boring. We rode 30 min or so and then turned back and went back towards Monterey.

The trail was on the city streets in Seaside and/or Sand City for a couple of blocks up on over passes - I couldn't get the lower gear on my bike so I ended up walking the bike up towards the top - but hung in there most of the way emoticon there was a bigger one when we went down inside Monterey city limits - it was huge - pics shows!

The trail went went along between city streets and coastal dunes towards the Old Fisherman's Wharf then continued down the middle of Cannery Row shopping spots. We found a picnic bench and stopped and had some lunch. Since it was middle of the week people were minimal which made the ride nice without people traffic. Then we made it all the way to Lover's Point in Pacific Grove/Monterey border. On the way back we locked our bikes up and went for a walk around the shops before heading back. Pics shows some of the views along the trail.

AND I hit the 30 lb weight loss point this week! emoticon
10 lbs now to goal weight and happy about that - the coastal rides plus changing up the exercise has helped - in between I have maintained pretty well - I am keeping it up emoticon

change

Friday, June 12, 2009

So we know things are changing right - but when we really see it - Wow!

I know I've lost weight - need to lose more and... I am more fit because I can do lots of things that I Wouldn't do before and I feel healthier... right? But I just gotta relate a change that came to my attention today.

I went to the gym alone today - did some strength on the machines. I have been trying to change it up on the cardio machines. Higher elevation, faster speeds, reverse mode, etc. When I first started exercising again in August I could barely do any elevation on the treadmill because my ankles would hurt and cramp and I would reach my target rate at about 6 or 7 elevation walking about 3.2 or so. I would usually back off to about 1 or 2 elevation and go back to manual or random after just a few minutes.

I have been doing the random walking about 3.2-3.4 level 3 and run about a minute or two at 4.9 or 5 then back down to 3 at a lower level. I work up a sweat and cool back down intermittently. I get to my target rate off and on but not consistent.

Today I went back to the cardio program on the treadmill. The elevation went all the way to 11.7 before I got to my target rate and I had to increase my speed to 4.7 walking to get there. No pain in the ankles and I kept that up for 15 minutes. I suppose others may walk faster but that is what my short legs could do without getting into a run/jog and then there goes the holding onto the bar for a heart rate... emoticon

Wow! couldn't have done that 9 or 10 months ago. Just reporting changes. I felt really good after that good work out.

My body is changing more than the scale at this point - getting really close to 30 lbs lost. I am out of the obese range and border lining heavy and normal - can't weight to get normal!!! emoticon
