Nothing much right today

Sunday, March 28, 2010

Too little exercise, too much food, and generally feeling a little tired and down today. Time to go to bed, get a good night's sleep, and start fresh tomorrow! Looking at the positives for the week ahead, it is supposed to be great weather, I work from home 4 out of the 5 days this week, and it's payday Thursday! Also, the colleague who has been of the past week will be back, and I should get the final approval to travel to Pittsburgh for a transplant symposium in May. So, thinking positive, and signing off for the night.

Have a great week!

A Quiet but productive day

Saturday, March 27, 2010

I got in a 5 mile run this morning, did some work in my home office, and then took three of the dogs to the groomer. While they at "the spa", I went and ran some errands. I also had a chance to look at the Total Wine store that just opened a little while ago up at Desert Ridge. Pretty overwhelming! It is very large, and has more wines than you could ever really look thru in one visit. Also lots of different beers, spirits and assorted related items. I made do with one inexpensive bottle of red wine, which I had a small glass of at dinner - very nice! Also managed to buy a new garbage disposal for the kitchen sink, pick up a new head set for my cell phone, and get my hair cut. Then it was back to the groomers to pick up the dogs, and back home. The 3 dogs that were at the groomers were exhausted by their ordeal, so when we got home, they pretty much crashed, and the other 7 followed suit. So I got to have a peaceful dinner, and I'll get to bed a little early. All in all, very enjoyable!

I hope everyone else is having a good weekend, too!

Six Months on SparkPeople!

Friday, March 26, 2010

Today marks my six month "SparkVersary". I joined after having the site recommended to me by a dietician at the Mayo Clinic (which is just down the hill from my house). At the time, I wanted to lose about 50 pounds, and get to 165. She thought that was too much to expect, so she said I should aim for 195. In the time since then I have gotten to 192, I've improved my eating in many ways, I have increased my exercise, and most importantly - I have been a part of a very supportive community.

I have re-set my goal, as many of you will recall, to 180, but I've been on a plateau for a few weeks. I am really looking forward to continuing on SparkPeople and in seeing further improvements. Thanks to everyone for their support and friendship!

Have a great weekend!

Obsessed with progress, so not listening

Thursday, March 25, 2010

I love to see progress. I track my Spark points, my exercise minutes, my FitLinxx points... and I want to see progress. I want to see that next 250 points go by or the next 1000 exercise minutes. The Y I go to uses a system called FitLinxx, and I want to see each level go by. I'm working on the final level there now. I like to see the mileage I do in a week or a month or a year increase. I don't like being stalled out, or missing a workout, or not getting as many points as possible. Am I Type A, obsessed, competitive, or what? There is a positive side to this. I am driven to keep doing my workouts, and to keep trying for higher levels of fitness. On the downside there was this morning.

When I got up today, I was really dragging. I had to force myself thru the morning routine of feeding the dogs and taking them out. Then I had to drag myself in to change for my workout. I finally hit the road for my run about 20 minutes late. I had to force myself to finish the full walk/jog (mostly walk today). When I finally made it back home, I was exhausted. Normally, I would get some water, go into my office and start Sparking, and then working. This morning, I turned the computer on...laid down and went back to sleep for 2 hours!

It was only once I woke up that I realized how badly I had needed that extra sleep. The rest of the day I felt great! I was able to do my time on the treadmill desk, I was more productive with my work, and I still was feeling like playing with the dogs after dinner. So, I guess I finally had an example of what everyone keeps saying - listen to your body! It was telling me I needed that sleep, and I did my best to ignore it. Hopefully I will have learned from this.

I hope all of you have a good night's sleep tonight!

Definitely listen to you body...if you don't, it will just take matters into its own hands. We may not like what we are hearing, but that's the way it is sometimes. You are doing a great job!!!

I couldn't agree with you more! I had this realization a few weeks ago, and now I try to listen to my body as much as possible. I do still have to push myself every now and then, but I do try and get the rest I need! Keep up the great work!

Yep, best to listen to your body! I'm pretty driven myself so this is a lesson I am just now learning, Not too well yet either as my body just kicked in with some sort of stomach issue and chills and now I am forced to get the rest I had be neglecting.

TAKE CARE OF YOU - not just physical fitness wise, but rest and sleep and recreation too!!!

Sounds like your body was giving you a shout out :) I know that my mind can ignore my body too. I love the challenge of getting to the next level. I did not realize that about me at the level that I have once I started SP. I had heard it about me and had seen glimpses of this competitive nature, but SP really made me SEE it. And, I am getting better at balancing the competitive nature with my body talking. However, I'm still too new at this to be able to discern the difference between my body needs a rest" and "Am I sore because I am learning something new... or am I sore because I have worked too hard."

I hope your body is not getting ready to get the flu or a cold...

Maybe - just maybe - that six hour day on the treadmill desk just wasn't such a good idea??
My body told me to lay off this week by kicking in with bugs and fever - chiropractor/kinesiologist told me my energy levels are way out of synch - need to rest, play, have fun and get past tomorrow's dance exams! And go back for another tweak next week - of course!

We need to listen to our body even if it doesn't tell us what we want to hear

I need to see the numbers change too. I don't think it is obsessive. How I think that Spark points are addictive. I have had to learn in the last few years to listen to my body when it says enough is enough already. I get frustrated sometimes because I want to keep going but I have learned to slow down when it happens. emoticon

Stuck

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

I haven't lost any weight in several weeks now. I haven't been able to break below 190, and I'm finding it frustrating and a little disheartening. However, I read a blog today about looking at how you are doing in other areas and not just concentrating on the scale. So, in that spirit, here are some of the positives:
- the number of pushups I can do at one time is steadily creeping upwards
- I'm finding it easier to do the long days on the treadmill desk
- my blood pressure has been really good the last couple of times I have checked it
- I'm getting faster on my morning runs, and covering more distance in the same time.
- I'm drinking more water and less diet Coke
- I'm sleeping well

So, I'm choosing to appreciate these things and not obsess about the scale for the time being. It will start to move down again sometime soon, I'm sure.

Have a great night!

If you are stuck, might as well be stuck in a great groove ! As you approach your goal weight the scale becomes less important to measure progress since it is usually the other areas you can start seeing more movement .. like running time and ease, weight you can lift, etc. heart rate, BP, whatever you happen to be working on. Not not stuck ... You're maxing out the utility of the scale .... WoooHooo !!

Those are great improvements! emoticon Right now you're body might be doing some converting of fat into muscle, which doesn't show up on the scale. Do you take your measurements? Many times when the scale doesn't move, the tape measure does. Keep up your great work!

BILLALEX70 3/25/2010 5:17AM

It's hard not to see the scale move when were working hard and eating right. This maybe one of those times where your body isn't ready to give up any weight.

Having put on weight during the holidays I'm still trying to rid myself of it, but instead of beat myself up I'm focusing on the positive. Me 12 weeks ago couldn't go out and run 9 miles, so weight be damned I'm focused on my well-being instead.

ANDYLIN90 3/25/2010 2:10AM

I had a long, long, spell of the scale not moving and it is discouraging because we all seem to want that number validation. But look at you! Your changes are so positive, especially your blood pressure. The scale will move just as it did for me. In the meantime you really deserve a big pat on the back for your current "measurements" of success.

I tell my Spark friends that plateaus are simply a beautiful mesa and that the smaller numbers on the scale or smaller pair of jeans are just over the next horizon. Enjoy the beautiful view from that mesa knowing that it will be only temporary and you'll be making your decent soon.

I keep trying to see the progress in all areas instead of the scale - it is supposed to be a total lifestyle change that make this stick. The scale will catch up sooner or later...we wish sooner, but unfortunately it is usually later.
