Morbid thinking or Not?

Friday, March 25, 2011

I am taking a small break from my PhotoBlog because this was something that was brought to my attention by a Sparkfriend and I feel the need to pass it on.

If you are like me, you have made amazing friends here on Spark. Could be someone that lives 3 blocks away or half way around the world. Most of these people I will never meet, but I consider them very dear friends.

I have had a couple of my Spark Friends tell me some incredible news this past week, in regards to their health and the health of loved ones. I thought, what if something were to happen? Something tragic? How would I ever find out?

As I talked about this with another of my SP Friend, he told me that he was going to give my email address to a trusted friend, as a "just in case". I told him I would do the same, but I am going to go one step further. I am going to give my trusted friend my log in information for Spark. I am going to ask her to go to each one of my teams and let them know if anything happens to me as well as my page. I have a few spark friends that I actually have their email address and I will give my BFF their email addresses too.

Is this morbid thinking? I don't think so. I know we are all here to get healthy and to live a longer life, but accidents happen. Car crashes, health issue that are non-health related...
I don't think this is any more morbid than drawing up a will or making pre-arranged funeral expenses.

I am giving my information to my friend this weekend. Won't you consider doing the same?

You're so right on with this idea! I'll add it to my files, on a "please notify" page. One time the co-leader of my Special Ed team disappeared and did not respond to emails, and I worried that something happened to her. Now I have contact info for all three of my co-leaders and they have mine.

Great blog Liz. I know that my sister would know to contact a local sparkfriend by getting numbers from my cell phone (if it was around) and she's also a facebook friend with that friend too, but I never thought about the login info... seems like something that two sparkfriends could swap as a "just in case" precaution, and like bringing an umbrella so that it doesn't rain, maybe being prepared will mean it won't be needed...

Nope...I totally agree with you. I've acquired some very real friendships here....

It's a great idea and I speak from very personal experience..one friend who died..she will quite ill had her daughter contact her close friends and we in turn tried to contact her friends and teamies via private sparkmail...

Another friend was actually involved in a car accident while on the way to the airport.

The list goes on but I suppose I have lost some ten friends I knew fairly well, a couple very well and all thankfully had given either log in and passwords or email addys to a fellow Spark friend or relative.

With the exception of one who became very ill after joining Spark..all were fairly young and healthy.

Morbid, no...practical certainly.

I agree with the above comments. I don't think it is morbid. Actually your blog made me think about this. I would hate to lose someone and not be able to find out anything. I think your ideas are great and you should go through with them. I am sure that I am older than you, too, so it makes me think I need to do something about this myself. Thanks for the idea. emoticon

I don't think you're being morbid, I think you're being prepared, which is always a good thing.

Being older than you, and with friends here on SparkPeople and on Flickr, I have thought about this, too. Would anyone know if something happened to me? Would my family members even think of it? I also wonder, who would care? So, I'm kind of on the fence but it brings up an important point and a good suggestion. In my file with my final instructions, living will and such, I should have a page with my login information and with my wishes for how to handle my social networks. Technology has changed the world and our little corner often branches out way beyond its borders...

That's a great idea! I have a spark friend who "disappeared" from spark and I have no idea what has happened! She was very active and involved and one day just "poof" she was inactive.. I wish I had some way to get in touch with her to find out if she's ok...

That's actually a good thought - not morbid. I live alone, and with my weird work schedule, I could be down and out in the house for days before someone misses me.

Day 17 - A picture of something that has made a huge impact on your life recently

Some of you know what all these Dragon Pictures mean. If you don't let me tell you....
It is the BLC Team - Jade Dragon Team! These pretty close group have made more impact on me than any other team I have ever joined on SparkPeople. I have joined all kinds of teams, ones with just 50 people all the way up to those with more than 10,000 people. I have made friends through just about ever team that I have joined but as individuals, not as a team. Jade Dragons are different. These 20 people are a group that have made the biggest impact on me than I could ever explain. I have been in two rounds of the BLC Challenge Team. Most of these Dragon team mates have been there much longer than I have. I have seen and am seeing Dragons go. But we have a motto in the Lair...once a Dragon always a Dragon.

The Jade Dragon team is no longer going to be a team on the BLC Challenge. I am not worried, The Dragons from the past and a few new Dragons will starting our own Team! I am sad to say that We are losing our beloved Team Captain SAYSARAH, Nan...this blog is dedicated to you. You will be missed.

To all my other team mates (past and future) thank you for allowing me to be a part of this great team!

Liz~ I'm touched and am sitting here with tears in my eyes!! I have been with Spark for awhile and been part of many teams as like you. I have never felt this close to a group as I do with my Dragon friends. I feel truly blessed to have all of you in my life.

Aww, how sweet Liz! The Dragons are lucky to have had you for two rounds and you better not think of leaving us any time soon! And don't worry, whether we're a BLC team or not, it's the group of people that makes our team special, and we'll still be just as special on our own! :)

Thanks so much Liz..very kind words. It's tough to leave the lair for a bit...but it's a good thing..I leave having known some tremendous people, ALL of whom have added something to my life...and that is amazing.

Meantime...I puruse my passion without diluting the passions of others, and have plenty to offer because I am the go getter amongst a huge group of go getters...looking forward to every Dragon, past, present and future doing well in every area of their life.

And....a word about your blogs...I have visited so many Dragon blogs and have loved them all...thanks so much to you and Penny for your picture blogs...they have made me really think...and at times laugh...I hope many will one day participate in doing this at some level.

Hugs always,
Nan

This is my husband...He inspires me to become a better person. Not just physically either. He Makes me want to become a better person. He says that is what I do for him...he has no idea.
We have been married for over 16 years and though it has not always been easy, i wouldn't change it for the world.

Amazing to watch people do this! I saw a group doing it in Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas - we were the only people on earth who went to LV to hike and not gamble! LOL!

Like you, I'm afraid of heights but I did climb a rock wall once... There's a blog called "Climb That Wall" on my page where I tell the story. It was an exhilirating experience and one that taught me that the only obstacles we have are those we place in our way...

Conquer yours! (But, try a rock wall first)!
