Day 03 - A picture of your inspiration for weight loss
This one, was easy,
I have said in the past that I would like Kelly Ripa’s Arms (bad picture of her but good one of her arms!)

and Jillian Michael’s Abs (taken 2008)

I am under no delusions here. These women’s JOBS are to look good. They are in front of cameras and people everyday. They probably work out for HOURS a day. Do I think I ever think I could get there, yes I do but not at this time in my life. I do not have the time and dedication that it takes to adjust my diet and exercise the way these women do. I am OK with that, I will get there in time. I know I will. Right now I have things like the PTA, church and my family that takes up a lot of time. I do take time for myself and exercise and do my best to eat right, everyday. Though as some of you know I am no longer at my goal weight I feel stronger and more healthy than I have in my entire life.
Because I know that Kelly’s Arms and Jillian’s abs are just not possible for me at this time, I turn to Spark for my inspiration on how to live a “normal” everyday life. For that I turn to someone that a lot of you have seen. I came across her page when I first became a member of Spark. She had just posted her 50th birthday blog with pictures. Now I am more than 20 year her junior but I somehow connect with her story, right away. I friends her and until just recently I put her as my number one friend so every time I went to my sparkpage I would see her and it would remind me of all things possible. Her name? BEMORESTUBBORN - Vivian is her name. Check out her page

She has a list of 20 ways on how she lost the weight and is keeping it off. Right now she is in the middle of blogging about each of those steps, it is awesome so subscribe! She has her own website with some beautiful pictures
Just over a year ago I got “The Spark” when if first came out. I was THRILLED to see her smiling face and story in the book...Maybe you did to. I took this picture from her page which is a picture out of the book:

It isn't hard to see why she is my weight loss inspiration.

Now that I've taken the time to thank you, let me also take the time to encourage you. As you aptly noted, you are much younger than I and your plate is full of responsibilities. I was there once... Running from morning to night, juggling a full-time job, two kids, a home, a husband, a business and, at one time, a college education as an adult. I often describe that period as being on "fast-forward" - a lot of it is a blur! But, with the benefit of hindsight, I learned that putting myself last was a huge mistake. It impacted how I felt and it made me lose a lot of myself in the process. The best gift you can give to those who love you is the best you there is, and taking time for yourself every day is vital to that. You have a handle on that principle at a young age and that's terrific! Now, mentally, kick it up another notch. Can you have arms like Ripa? Why not? Can you have abs like Michaels? That's a bigger challenge, but again, why not? What is more important though, from my viewpoint, is that you ask yourself this question: "What is the best me that I can be?" and take it from there.

Believe in yourself and in the power within you to make your dreams come true...

I am in tears reading this! Happy ones...

When I first joined SparkPeople, I did it to find an easier way to track calories. Never in a million years did I imagine that anyone would look at my page, let alone be impacted by my pedestrian story of weight loss. I am deeply touched and humbled by tributes such as yours and I thank you, not only for your appreciation but also because this motivates me. It holds me to a higher standard of accountability and I take that very seriously; it helps me to continue to always improve upon my best efforts; it keeps me connected.

Thank you for making my day, my week and my month!

Day 02 - A picture of you and the person you have been closest with the longest

This one I had a hard time with. I couldn’t pick just one person! I have a group! I met all but one of these people within a couple years ago. Some 20 to 24 years ago.

My first picture is of me with my girls! They are my rock. They put me in my place when my head gets to big. We all have been friends since Freshman/sophomore year in high school. I can tell them ANYTHING and Often do! Kim, me, Michelle and Christy:

This picture is of my man. He is cute isn’t he? We have been married for 16 years and dated for 3 years before than. We have had our ups and downs, but this is the man of my dreams.

We met when I was a Senior in High School he was in college. Originally my friend Kim had wanted to set him up with our friend Christy....yea, that didn’t work out so well :-) Lucky for me!
After so many years of being together we still cuddle on the couch, hold hands on walks and kiss in the kitchen while we are cooking.
Like I said, we have had our ups and downs. We have decided that whatever we face we are together forever. Divorce is not an option.
Recently, we have decided we need to work on communication so we have chair time. No computer, tv, phones or kids to distract us. We spend 30 minutes to an hour in the chair just talking. I can honestly say that this time is our favorite time of the day.

ING Miami Marathon - Ghost

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

As some know, I am part of the BLC15 Challenge...I am a Jade Dragon! The Maintenance team. We have 3 current and 4 former Dragons that are going to Miami this weekend to run/walk in the 5K, Half Marathon or Marathon, so I am Ghosting them (thanks Nan, I am copying and pasting from your blog) ;-).

Beth - Coopsmom...former Dragon
Suezette - Suezette-414 current Dragon and a co-captain
Jopa - Jopaph ...current dragon and former co-captain
Gail - Rhynic...former Dragon
Tammy - Tamtam64 ...former Dragon
John - Freedomstar...former Dragon
Christy - TOBEARUNNER...current Dragon and current co-captain in charge of challenges

What is a ghost you ask? Well, it is traditionally when a person/people who are NOT physically at the race run/walk at the same time as the people AT the race. Us Dragons have put our own little spin on it...there are SEVERAL of my fellow Dragons that are ghosting this weekend, each of us doing our own miles and times to get it done. So far these are the Dragons and the milage
Mike (MKKAYA) - Half Marathon
JoAnn (JOANN562)- 10k
Nan (SEYSARAH) - Marathon - Awesome
Penny (RUNNINGWILD)- 20k
Terri (TKAYSMILES)- 5k
Jackie (MISSJCISRUNNING)- 16 mile

Me? I am doing a Half Marathon...MY style. I was so excited when Mike told me it was ok to do it this way. I started today...I plan on walking 3 - 3.25 miles on my treadmill each day until Saturday...The actual race isn't until Sunday so I am giving myself until Sunday to make up any miles that are missed. I started today with a 3.25 mile walk...I Might have done more but my computer battery went down (didn't have the plug with me in the basement). I am doing it this way because as most of you know, I have had reoccurring problems with my foot so I am not pushing and only doing the MAX my foot will allow me to do.

I am so excited and proud of all our Dragons past and present (even though we believe that once a Dragon, always a Dragon!). Good luck and Safe Travels...praying the weather co-operates for everyone to get there!

Lizzy I am having so much fun with's a chance for everyone to be included in some way and that's the part I love about being a Jade Dragon..I may not be a runner but I can take part too...

Those that are actually going to Miami know that they pay for accomodations, travel expenses, registration fees etc and not all can do that...however as the saying goes..there is a wonderful way for those of us who are unable to do so because of financial or family obligations can be a direct part of this marathon through virtual participation..and of course on the Dragon team..all ghosts will be getting their "virtual medals too."

I too, have prayers and good thoughts for those traveling and wish all a safe journey!

Letting go of 2010 - Looking forward to 2011 and Balance

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

I hand wrote this blog on Dec 19th on the long 3-4 hour drive from my house to Chicago:

Spark People has meant a lot to me over the last two years. I have learned a lot and met some wonderful people. I hope that I have been just a small help to people as they have helped me. As 2011 approaches at full speed; I have found myself doing a lot of thinking about things in my life. I am the first one that will preach everything in moderation. I believe in most things I have been sucessfull at that.

It first occurred to me that SparkPeople isn't one of those things back a couple of months ago when my husband told me that he wanted some of my attention. As we talked he told me that he was jealous (not his exact words) of SP an the relationships that I had formed with people I didn't even know. He told me that he understood my need to be on SP but thought I gave to much of my time to people online. At first I got very defensive then as I started to calm down and think about things I realized while some friends I have made here will be friends until they get tired of me, I was letting the ones that mean the most to me suffer. I was putting SP in front of my marriage and family.

That is really a hard thing for me to admit. In a recent friend feed I had a conversation with a dear friend and it was put something like this. Some of us have used SP as a substitute for eating but have never really addressed the real issues that made us over weight/unhealthy in the first place.

I have put SP in front of a lot things in my life in the past few months including my work, home life, and even paying my bills on time. I get lost in blogs and articles and teams. I have spent a lot of time searching for someone to hold me accountable when really I should have been looking for that within myself.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying goodbye to Spark. I am a life long sparker.

What I am saying is that I need to reduce my time here. start living my life day by day; not when I get back down to my goal weight. As one of my goals for 2011 is to reduce the HOURS spent on SP everyday & examine what it is that is stopping me from being present in my life. It will take some soul searching and I may need to ask for help (which is really hard for me) but I know I will do it and maybe, just maybe I will stay with in 5 lbs of my goal weight!

Thanks for Reading.

You said it all. Life is out there... live it to it's fullest and don't feel trapped by those who haven't yet realized they could fly too. :) Whether it is kids to play kickball with out in the yard, or a house to get cleaned up... there is living to do beyond this site. BUT whenever you need support, or company, or just a pat on the back for doing right, we ALL will be here... ALWAYS. Go get 'em girl!!! lol

Thanks for this blog Liz, I'm sure there are lots of Sparkers who are in the same boat. I hope that the Dragons fall within the new limits you're setting for yourself, but will understand if we don't. I'm happy having one team and one focus on SP, while still reading blogs and posting on friend's pages when I can. Wishing you a more balanced and therefore happier new year! :)

This is a great blog and on target for many including myself at one point or another. Each year I've been on Spark I've taken a good look at teams, friends, and the time I spend allocating a specified amount of time and that's it. For me, that also means limiting teams for which I need to post to frequently to one..a challenge team that does me the most good.

Everyone is so very different and their demands, needs, and responsibilities are very unique.

For me, exercise time is not me time but rather necessary healthy time..the same for time grocery shopping and batch cooking etc.

The time I spend on Sparks is deliberate and my personal case I am a caregiver and much of my day has been devoted to very serious responsiblities off the checking in daily is helpful just keeping my sanity..that and keeping my own healthy life style in check. I motivate myself but I learn constantly from others..and that's the difference. Dennis cannot engage in the give and take of healthy living because I'm the one working with and teaching him.

It's different with may very well find that limiting your time is beneficial to all areas of your life. Sparks says it..everything in moderation and you will probably find just like I did that some times I truly need Sparks more during different periods of my life...what we all have in common is finding a way to make ourselves sustained in healthy living..if you can easily do it with limiting Spark time..that is wonderful..maybe doing so by cutting back on teams, friends you feel obligated to visit, cutting back on blogs you visit etc might did me...

Here's to a wonderful 2011 where you find balance that makes you happy and healthy as well as all folks in your family and's just takes adjusting and compromising from all sides.

Hugs to you and good luck in your new adventure. Know that I support this new work..limiting computer time and hope you personally can benefit as well!

Hugs always,

Spark definitely can be a time consuming and in some cases, a diversion to what needs to be addressed in real life. For me, Spark is such a great tool, not by the articles or the helpful hints but by the other members. I've left spark a couple of times, thinking that I was putting too much into it and not living life... but I've always come back. Why? because, for me, the bonds that I share with others on Spark, the friendships, the support that goes both ways, is something that I need for me, and no one can take that away. Spark has definitely made my life a whole lot brighter, and when you find your balance between work, home and Spark then you can take advantage of what this has to offer without feeling like your sacrificing anything. The cool thing is, when you need to take a sabbatical from Spark, your friends will still be your friends when you return. Now that's life-long friendship!

If you need any extra support, feel free to contact me directly.

PS: Tell your husband to join Spark and we will give him a warm welcome and he can see what the hubbub is all about!

I did that too...less time on SP, more time w/ the kiddos. But really, SP got me to goal and into maintainance, then I didn't have the NEED to spend as much time it kind of worked well and naturally for me.

Have a wonderfully balanced 2011!

So it looks like there's more than one of us who have used Spark to avoid other things, huh?

It's a double edged sword. Spark has introduced me to a lot of really good people (like you!) and helped me get my weight under control. I will be a lifelong Sparker too. But you're right -- too much of a good thing stops us from being present in our real lives. Those are big words. I'm glad we'll stay friends, even if we're spending less time here.
